WEDDING COUPLE PORTRAIT : HALSTAD, MINNESOTA : O. E. FLATEN : CABINET CARD

This photographic portrait captures a lovely formally dressed couple. It is likely that this is a wedding photo. Both the man and the woman are dressed in formal clothing. In addition, the gentleman is wearing a  boutonniere while the woman is wearing a corsage. Looks like wedding attire to me. The photographer is O. E. Flaten who at the time of the photograph, had studios in Moorehead and Halstad, Minnesota; as well as in Gardner, North Dakota. Research reveals that Ole E. Flaten (1854 or 1865- 1933) was born in Vanders, Norway and emigrated to the United States. He worked as a photographer from the 1870’s through the 1920’s, retiring in 1930. This cabinet card portrait has minor edge and cornerwear and is in very good condition (see scans).

A WOMAN POSES WITH POSIES IN WELLMAN, IOWA

A woman surrounded by flowers is the subject of this cabinet card portrait by J. V. Wahl, of Wellman, Iowa. A dark patterned curtain serves as the background in this photograph. The patterned curtains, the multitude of flowers, the patterned chair, and the young woman; make for a very busy image. In fact, the viewer’s eyes don’t know where to focus. An inscription on the reverse of the photograph indicates that the subject of this cabinet card is Miss Edith Ash of Washington, Iowa. The photograph was taken in January, 1898. Edith Ash (1878-?) is listed in the census of 1880 through 1920 as a resident of Washington County, Iowa. She is most likely the subject in this image. She was married to Howard Cooper, circa 1899.

COSTUMED GIRLS IN SCHOOL PLAY (1883)

This cabinet card appears to be an image of a group of girls who are members of a cast of a school play. The girls are dressed in ethnic costumes. The girl sitting closest to the photographer is dressed beautifully in gypsy garb. Two individuals in this image appear to be adults and one may surmise that they are the teachers who are directing the show. Two of the girls are holding flowered hoops. A sign made up of leaves or vines indicate that this photograph was taken in 1883. Next to the date, two letters are hanging. The letters are either “MC” or “HC”, which may be an abbreviation of the school or group that is putting on the production. The name and location of the photographer is unknown since a prior owner of this cabinet card trimmed the edges to fit into an album or frame.

PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN

This photograph features a pretty young woman wearing flowers pinned to her dress.  Interestingly, the flowers include the attached long stems which is distracting and detracts from the woman’s beauty.
