ATTRACTIVE YOUNG ROMANIAN COUPLE IN TRADITIONAL GARB (1930’s)

romanians

romanians 2 This vintage real photo postcard presents an interesting ethnological portrait of a Romanian couple dressed in traditional garb. It is notable that this couple was not concerned about public displays of affection. The young man has his right arm wrapped around the woman’s shoulder/back. The young lady’s hand is resting on the gentleman’s shoulder. The pair give an appearance of a proud loving couple. Could this be a wedding portrait? Note the woman’s purse. It has a design that includes someone holding a leash attatched to a dog. An inscription on the reverse of this postcard reveals that the photograph was taken in 1937. The postcard is in very good condition.

PORTRAIT OF UNCLE DICK : WATERLOO, IOWA

Meet Uncle Dick. His name is inscribed on the reverse of the cabinet card. He appears to be middle aged and possess a sunny disposition. He is well dressed and has a nicely groomed mustache. Note the width of his tie. I find it interesting that the width of neck ties tend to vary as the years go by. This photograph was produced by the Adams studio in Waterloo, Iowa. It is difficult to ascertain the full name of the photographer. W. G. Adams worked in Waterloo in the 1880’s but I could not find any information about him. Asa W. Adams (1842-1915) operated a studio in McGregor, Iowa (1863), Decorah, Iowa (1863-1884). In 1866 he married Emma J. Fuller and the couple had four children. Adams conducted his photography business in Waterloo (1884-after 1900). Adams died in 1915 and is buried in Decorah. This cabinet card is in very good condition (see scans).

SIX FASHIONISTAS AND THEIR HATS

“There’s something happening here. What it is ain’t exactly clear”. These Buffalo Springfield lyrics describes my reaction to the image presented by this vintage real photo postcard. Was this photo taken to showcase attire from a fashion company? Are these women related or are they members of some sort of organization? The answers to these questions are lost to history. This vintage postcard is in good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY DANCER WEARING AN UNUSUAL RISQUE COSTUME

This vintage real postcard features a costumed young woman. The image is a bit risque for it’s time. There is a lot of leg showing. The costume is an enigma. What culture or ethnicity is her costume meant to represent. Her hat is best described as sombreroesque. One collector has hypothesized that she is a cowgirl. Perhaps she is a dancer. I am not sure why her outfit has fringes only over the right arm and the left leg. Did the designer run out of material? Just kidding. This postcard likely has an interesting background story but I am afraid that it is lost to history. An inscription on the front of the postcard indicates that the postcard is from 1920. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

SNAKE CHARMER DOING HIS CHARM IN BENARES, INDIA

This vintage real photo postcard features a snake charmer doing his charm in Benares, India. Ophidiophobics should think twice before adding this postcard to their collection. This photograph is a snake phobics nightmare. The photo was taken in Benares, which in India is known as Varanasi. The city is on the banks of the Ganges river. Benares is a major religious hub in India. In fact, it is the holiest of India’s seven sacred cities. What is the point of snake charming. It is the practice of hypnotizing snakes by playing and waving around an instrument called a “pungi”. A popular species of snake used in this practice are cobras. The snake charmer handles the snakes and performs dangerous acts with them. They also do other types of street performances (ie juggling or sleight of hand). India is considered the center of snake charming but the practice is also common is Pakistan, Thailand , Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and other Asian and North African countries. The popularity of snake charming is on the decline. Snake charmers tend to be transient. They visit towns during festivals and market days. The charmers are not suicidal. They sit outside of biting range and try to work with snakes when the snakes are sluggish. In addition, some of the snakes have their fangs and/or their venom glands removed. Some unfortunate snakes have their mouth sewn shut. The snakes do not hear the charmers music. Instead, they are interested in attacking the pungi, which they view as a predator. This postcard appears to be from the 1940’s.   (SOLD)
