ADORABLE LITTLE BOY AND HIS TEDDDY BEAR ON WHEELS IN HAMBURG, GERMANY
This fantastic carte de visite features an adorable little boy and his toy teddy bear. The toy bear is on a string leash and on four wheels for easy walking. The child’s outfit, including his matching socks, are very stylish. The photograph was taken at the studio of Adolf Bruns in Hamburg, Germany. This larger than usual cdv measures about 2 1/4″ x 4 1/2″ and is in excellent condition.

PORTRAIT OF AN INQUISITVE TODDLER IN ROANNE, FRANCE (CARTE DE VISITE)
This Carte de Visite features an adorable child displaying a skeptical but very inquisitive expression. The toddler is sitting on a chair and wearing a short gown with strings across his/her shoulders. The child’s attire would be unacceptable today due to safety concerns. The photograph was taken by Jean Emile Dessendier of Roanne, a city in central France. The cdv was produced in 1889 or later as evidenced by the printing on the bottom border of the photograph which states that Dessendier won a photography medal at the 1889 Exposition at the University of Paris. This carte de visite portrait features an adorable child sitting on a wooden bench next to a toy dog. The child is wearing a cute sailor style outfit. The photograph was taken by the Jiri Lomicek studio in Kladno, Czechoslovakia. Kladno is a city in the Central Bohemian region of the current Czech Republic. It is located 16 miles northwest of Prague. This cdv is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF AN OLD MAN WEARING A “NECK BEARD”
This carte de visite features an old man wearing a “neck beard”. This style of beard was popular in the 19th century. This gentleman is in good company. Other neck bearders include Richard Wagner (composer), Henry David Thoreau (Essayist, Poet, Philosopher), and Horace Greeley (Author, Statesman, Newspaper Editor). It is interesting to note that in today’s culture, “neck beard” is a perjorative term for social awkwardness or pretentiousness. The subject of this cdv photo is well dressed. He gives the appearance of a kind good humored man. The photographer of this image is the Rodgers studio, which was located in Hartford, Connecticut. The Connecticut Historical Society’s online site provides some information about Hart J. Rodgers (1831-1905). During the 1850’s he worked as a daguerreotypist in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1855, he married Grace A. Rodgers. By 1871, he was operating a photo studio in Hartford. Interestingly, in the 1880’s he was the owner of a skating rink. This cdv image is in very good condition.

A pretty young woman poses for her carte de visite portrait at the Charles S. Rawson Gallery on Fulton Street in Brooklyn, New York. I would estimate that the subject is in her teenage years. Her sparkling eyes and smile give her a very engaging appearance. The photographer, Charles S. Rawson is listed in Brooklyn business directories in at least !870 through 1892. This cdv is in very good condition (see scans)

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG SALVATION ARMY WOMAN IN GEFLE (GAVLE), SWEDEN
A young woman dressed in a Salvation Army uniform poses for her Carte de Visite portrait at the Central studio in Gefle, Sweden. Note her Salvation Army badge which she is wearing at her collar. She is also wearing quite a serious expression. “Gefle” is a spelling for the town “Gavle” which was used from the 1500’s to the early 1900’s. The city is the oldest city in the “Norrland”. It received it’s charter in 1446. SOLD
ELDERLY WOMAN WEARING MOURNING DRESS IN EDMONTON, CANADA
This carte de visite portrait features an aged woman wearing mourning clothes. Her black dress, black hat, and sad expression, all suggest that she has suffered a recent loss. Her left hand is placed on a book atop a small table. The book is likely a bible. The photographer of this cdv photograph is J. R. Bentley. He operated a studio in Edmonton, Canada. Research found an ad in “The Photographic News” (1893) in which Bentley advertises the sale of his studio. It is very interesting to note that the advertising on the reverse of this CDV refers to Bentley as a “Portrait, Landscape, & Equestrian Photographer”. I do not remember ever seeing a early photographer refer to himself as a “Equestrian” photographer. I wonder if Mr. Bentley took photos of individual horses, or if he photographed individuals sitting on horses. I hope someday I locate one of Bentley’s equestrian photographs.

The young child appears quite poised and is so cute in his outfit which includes overalls (or are those straps..suspenders), bow tie, and wide rimmed hat. The cdv has an inscription on it’s reverse that I could not translate. (SOLD)
