UNREMARKABLE PORTRAIT BY MISS GARRITY: FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHER IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

This cabinet card is a very ordinary profile portrait of a middle aged woman. She is nicely dressed in a high collar dress with lace trim. The only thing remarkable about this cabinet card is that the photographer, Miss Garrity, is a woman. Miss Garrity’s studio was located in Chicago, Illinois. MASTER R. DEMARST: PIANO BOY OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

This Cabinet Card captures young Master R. Demarst sitting at a piano in the studio of W. J. Root, in Chicago, Illinois. An inscription on the reverse of the photograph indicates that the boy musician was six years old at the time the image was produced. He is very well dressed in his velvet suit. He is wearing a ring on his right middle finger. The photographer’s studio was located at 243-253 Wabash Avenue, in Chicago. The back stamp on the reverse of the card states that Root’s studio was located in Kimball Hall. When Root began his business, he took souvenir photographs at the Worlds Columbian Exposition of 1893. He is mentioned in various photographic journals from 1892 until 1897. To view other photographs by Root, click on Cabinet Card Gallery’s category “Photographer:  Root.”   Thanks to the amazing research department of the Cabinet Gallery (see comments), additional identifying information about the young boy in this photograph has been discovered. In the book, “Musical Instruments at the World’s Columbian Exposition: A Review (1895), it is noted that Master Rubinstein Demarest, aged 5, won the love of all who met him. He appeared at the Exposition and “his piano playing was almost marvelous considering his youth”. The boy was a native of St. Paul, Minnesota where he was regarded as a protege of great promise.

AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

This cabinet card features an African American woman posing for her portrait at the studio of Hartley in Chicago, Illinois. The woman is nicely dressed. Her fashion statement includes an interesting hat and a cumberbund. The Cabinet Card Gallery has a large collection of images of Blacks at the turn of the century. BRIDE AND GROOM IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

This photograph captures a pretty bride and handsome groom. It is possible that this couple are attendants in a wedding but the woman appears to be wearing a wedding gown. If she is the maid of honor, one must pity the  bride because this attractive maid of honor likely upstaged her. The couple has four different flower arrangements in this photograph. The photographic studio responsible for this image is Sander’s & Gross located in Chicago, Illinois.

GOOD TIME GIRL IN NEW YORK CITY (1897)

The following letter in inscribed on the reverse of this cabinet card. “Dear Friends, This picture I send as a token to remember the good times we had and hoping to see you all again if not in this world then in the next. From a true friend, Lizzie   This day November 4/1897”. This is a sweet letter from a girl who appears to be in her teenage years. The photographer of this cabinet card is The Robinson & Roe Photo Studios, in  New York City. The studio had operations in both Manhattan and Brooklyn. They also operated a studio in Chicago, Illinois. They were prominent photographers in the 1880’s and 1890’s. The pair of photographers are known for their photographs of Inuits from Labrador that were produced during the Worlds Columbian Exposition in Chicago (1893). The Inuits were part of the Eskimo Village exhibition. SOLD

SWEET BABY GIRL IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

This cabinet card photograph is a portrait of a very sweet and adorable little girl posing in the studio of Siegel Cooper in Chicago Illinois. She appears a bit fearful but at the same time she appears to be interested in what is happening around her.  She is perched on a wicker chair.
