DAPPER MAN WITH BIG MUSTACHE AND SMALL BEARD IN MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA

A well dressed man with a large mustache and a clump of chin whiskers, poses for his portrait at the studio of Eggan, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is difficult to identify the photographer of this photograph. The city of Minneapolis hosted a number of photographers that shared the name “Eggan”, each of them sharing the same studio address. Apparently the Eggan family, which was of Norwegian descent,  had a passion for photography. Photographers included Ole P., Halvor P., S. A., Sevor P., Stephen, and James Eggan.

This cabinet card is an image of a handsome young man photographed by H. O. Reed of Brunswick, Maine. The subject is well dressed and has well groomed facial hair. Reed was a native of Brunswick, Maine and began working as a photographer in 1877.

ASIAN MAN IN DAVENPORT, IOWA (IT AIN’T NECESSARILY SO!)

This photograph features a gentleman of Asian appearance posing in the studio of Jarvis White, in Davenport, Iowa. The subject may not actually be of Asian descent; the hypothesis is certainly debatable. The gentleman has a fantastic and well tended mustache and beard. The photograph has remarkable clarity. The reverse of the photo has a pencilled inscription of a woman’s first name (Grace) and an illegible last name. The card is also dated November, 1898. The photographer of this image established his photographic studio in 1874 and was the successor to Hastings, White & Fisher, of 320 Brady Street, in Davenport, Iowa.

HANDSOME AFRICAN AMERICAN MAN IN SEDALIA, MISSOURI; OR QUINCY, ILLINOIS

This Cabinet Card features a very handsome African American gentleman with a terrific handlebar mustache. He is very well dressed and has short parted hair. This man has movie star good looks before the era of  movies. The photographer is Fritz, who had studios in both Sedalia, Missouri, and Quincy, Illinois.

GOOD LOOKING GUY IN WEST BEND, WISCONSIN

A well dressed and very handsome man poses for his photographic portrait at the studio of Schreiber Bros. in West Bend, Wisconsin. The gentleman’s hair has been styled with care and his mustache earns him a spot in the cabinet card gallery’s “Mustaches (Only the Best)” category. The Schreiber Bros. studio won photography awards in 1898, according to the journal, Photographic Times (1898). Research indicates the brothers are L. Schreiber and W. F. Schreiber.

HANDSOME MAN IN MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE

Meet Walter Burnham, who is posing for his portrait at the studio of Langley, in Manchester, New Hampshire. The studio was located at  780 Elm Street. TURN OF THE CENTURY TOUGH GUY

In short, he looks like a tough guy. There is no identifying information available concerning the gentleman photographed, or the photographer. MAN WITH UNFRIENDLY MUTTON CHOPS IN PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

A gentleman with unfriendly mutton chops poses for his portrait at the studio of P. E. Chillman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Why use the adjective “unfriendly”? The answer is that  the term “friendly” mutton chops refers to mutton chops that are joined by a mustache. This gentleman’s mutton chops lack a connecting mustache, thus, the mutton chops are not friendly. INTERESTING MUSTACHE IN WINCHESTER, ILLINOIS

A well dressed gentleman poses for his cabinet card photograph at the studio of George Jefferson (not the “moving on up” George Jefferson). The reverse of the card indicates that the subject of this photograph is named George King. He is wearing a pin but the insignia image  is unclear and can’t be identified.
