jew-family-in-minsk_0001This Cabinet card comes from the estate of a Jewish family.  The photograph is an image of a Jewish family in Minsk, Russia.  The parents and children are dressed up nicely for their visit to the photographers studio. Note the footwear and the young boy’s hat.

  1. This photograph wasn’t made in Minsk, but in a city called Pinsk, near Brest in what is now Byelarus. Before the Second World War 90% of its population was Jew.
For more information about Pinsk, look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinsk

  2. I have a photo that appears to be from the same photographer. I am trying to Identify it. If anyone knows that name of the photographer can they tell me. Thanks.

  3. Hello Sonya
The name of the photographer transcribes as M.E. Ilivitskij. Unfortunately there are no Cyrillic fonts on this computer.
    Hope this helps.

    Kind regards,
    Johan

    • That is very close to the name I came up with, thank you so much for your response. Take care.

      Sonya

  4. This photo is not from Minsk, and from Pinsk (Belarus)!
