Yes, it’s also the state nickname. Ohio is “The Buckeye State”, like Pennsylvania is “The Keystone State”, California is “The Golden State”, etc.
I’d give this a guess date of early 1880s. I would really need to do some cross referencing to be more certain but I’m on vacation. 🙂
