This cabinet card portrait features a well dressed and handsome couple posing at Edy Brothers studio in London (Ontario), Canada. The studio was located at 214 Dundas Street. The gentleman is holding some papers on his lap. The attractive young woman appears to appreciate jewelry. She is wearing a necklace and a ring. Edy Brothers Studio was a family run business for several decades between the 1860’s and teh early 1920’s in Brantford and London, Ontario. James Newbury Edy (1843-1890) and William Daniel Edy (1832-1911) were the original partners that started the business. William’s son Leslie Eli Edy (1864-1919) ran the business in the early 1900’s. The next proprietor was Franklin William Edy who operated the studio until it’s closure in 1922.  (SOLD)

afr am coupleThis vintage photograph features an African American man and woman. The pair dressed up in their fanciest clothing to pose for this portrait. The man is wearing a plaid suit and a vest. The couple may be husband and wife though the man looks significantly older than the woman. The woman has her left hand on the man’s shoulder in a display of affection. The subjects of this photograph as well as the photographer are unidentified.This photograph measures about 4″x 5″.  (SOLD)

ATTRACTIVE WEDDING COUPLE IN BERLIN, GERMANY

The young wedding couple pictured in this portrait are well dressed and quite attractive. The pretty bride looks terrific in her wedding gown and bridal veil. She is holding a bouquet of flowers in her white gloved hand. The handsome groom is holding a pair of white gloves. One suspects that this couple is well-to-do judging by their appearance. This cabinet card portrait was taken by the studio of Otto Witte who operated his photography business in Berlin, Germany.

WEDDING PHOTO OF A SLOUCHING GROOM AND HIS AUSTERE BRIDE

This cabinet card photograph is a wedding portrait featuring a slouching groom and an austere bride. The wedding couple are both adorned with flowers. The groom in this photo is probably trying to project a relaxed appearance but instead comes off as sloppy. He is slouching while leaning on a chair and his hand is partially in his pocket. This is not a spectacular pose. His bride is wearing a pretty dark wedding dress with a long veil. She is also wearing a rather frosty expression. The photographer of this portrait is the Dawson studio which was located in New London, Wisconsin. J. C. Dawson’s studio was in business in New London from 1877  through 1914. After his death in 1914, the studio continued to operate under it’s name with a new proprietor. Dawson also had a studio is Oshkosh between 1891 and 1893. He operated a third studio in Hortonsville in at least 1893. Dawson (1856-1914) was married to Almeda Dawson in 1880. The 1900 US census found him living in New London with his wife, two daughters (ages 15 and 18),  father, and one boarder.  SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG SOLDIER AND A YOUNG WOMAN IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

This vintage photograph features a uniformed American soldier and a young woman who is likely either his girl friend, wife, or sister. The young man is handsome and his uniform is crisp. His expression has a military air about it. The young woman in this image does not seem very comfortable with the process of being photographed. This portrait was produced by the Johnson studio which was located in San Francisco, California. This photograph measures 3 1/2″ x 5″. PORTRAIT OF A COUPLE IN COLDWATER (BETTER THAN HOTWATER), MICHIGAN

A well dressed couple pose for their portrait at the Osborn studio in Coldwater, Michigan. Interestingly, this is the second cabinet card gallery photograph to originate from a Coldwater photographer’s studio. This lovely couple assumes the popular at the time pose of the man sitting and woman standing. The subjects also assume the standard “no smile” expression. Note the woman’s large bow and corset assisted figure. Also worth noting is the man’s mustache, pocket watch chain and bow tie. He is also wearing a pin on his vest. Clarence R. Osborn (1865-1950) was a photographer in Coldwater from 1890 through 1935. He was born in Steuben County, Indiana and died in Branch County, Michigan. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater.

PORTRAIT OF AN ATTRACTIVE COUPLE ON THE CHEAPSIDE IN LONDON, ENGLAND

An attractive well dressed couple pose for their portrait at the studio of Wicksteed and Palmer in London, England. The man and woman in this photograph were on the cheapside. Actually, the couple’s photographer’s studio was located on the cheapside which is the name of a street in the city of London. The name Cheapside is derived from the term “marketplace”. Charles Benjamin Wicksteed (1863-1935) and Edward John Palmer were partners in the studio which produced this image. The studio was located at the Cheapside address from 1899 through 1933. Wicksteed also worked as a wood engraver.  (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF A MENNONITE COUPLE IN ILLINOIS

This cabinet card features a portrait of a young Mennonite couple. Note the couples plain style of dress, the young man’s beard, and the woman’s bonnet.  The reverse of the photograph has an inscription noting that the couple’s name is “Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Wagner”. An additional note on the verso states “return to Ida Buckingham, Oakley, Illinois”. Ida Buckingham (1886-1964) was likely a relative of the pictured couple and possessed the photograph during some period of her life. The photographer of this image is W. H. Farley. He operated photographic studios in Crete, Tampico, and Gibson, Illinois during the 1880’s. To view more of his photographs, click on the category “Photographer: Farley”.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A BRIDE AND GROOM IN WALLACE, IDAHO (PARIS PANEL)

This cabinet card portrait features a bride and groom posing for their wedding picture at the studio of T. N. Barnard of Wallace, Idaho. Both bride and groom are well dressed. The bride is wearing a veil that has two feathers sticking straight up into the air. She is also wearing gloves and a three stranded necklace of pearls or beads. The bride is pretty and appears quite young. The groom has a pocket watch and it’s chain can be seen underneath his jacket. This cabinet card is very large (approximately 9 3/4″ x 6 3/4″). Cabinet cards of this size are called “Paris Panels” and that term can be seen printed on the bottom of this photograph. This type of cabinet card was produced in the 1890’s. The photographer of this image was Thomas Nathan Barnard. Barnard and his wife arrived in Wallace in 1889. Nellie Stockbridge was a retoucher in his studio and she assumed ownership when Barnard became mayor of Wallace. Both Barnard and Stockbridge are known for their mining photographs. A book of their work “The Photographic Record of T. N. Barnard and Nellie Stockbridge from the Coeur d’Alenes was published in 1903. In addition, there is a large collection of Barnard and Stockbridge’s work at the University of Idaho library. The image seen below is the Barnard building, located in Wallace, and photographed in 1907.  (SOLD)

MEET THE WINKLERS…..PORTRAIT OF AN ATTRACTIVE COUPLE IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Meet the Winkler’s. The reverse of this cabinet card has an inscription that introduces us to this lovely couple. Their names are  Gregor and Maria (Mitzi) Winkler. The couple are very well dressed. Each has a spray of flowers pinned to their lapel. He is holding his gloves while she is wearing her gloves. They appear to be dressed to attend an important formal event. The couple are posed at the August Kuhnel studio in Vienna, Austria. The photograph, according to the inscription was taken in 1920.
