FORMALLY DRESSED COUPLE IN SPRING VALLEY, MINNESOTA

 A beautifully dressed couple pose for their portrait at a studio in Spring Valley, Minnesota. The photographer is Lucious M. Schofield who operated out of Spring Valley between 1889 and 1894. . Schofield’s gallery was taken over by E. G. Washburn. The couple in this photograph is dressed for a formal occasion and the quality of their clothing indicates that they are likely financially secure.

HANDSOME COUPLE IN LOCKPORT, NEW YORK (IS THE WOMAN AN AFRICAN AMERICAN?

A lovely couple pose for their portrait at a studio in Fairport, New York. The photographer is F. B.  Clench. This handsome couple is beautifully dressed. A previous owner of this card described the woman as an “African American Beauty”. She is certainly beautiful but it is not clear that she was an African American. A local modern day historical society described Clench as the finest photographer working in Fairport in the late 19th century. He was born in Niagara, Canada. He set up his first photographic studio in Lockport, New York in 1863. He operated in Fairport between 1889 and 1902. He then moved to Madison, Georgia until he returned to Fairport in 1914, the year of his death. Clench was clearly a talented photographer. Wilson’s photographic magazine described Clench as a “painstaking and progressive artist”. The reverse of this photograph is stamped with the following: “Clark T. Rice Collections, Perry, New York. Clark Rice (1922-1999) was a photographer in the Perry, New York area whose work captured the Perry area from just after World War II until the 1990’s. During World War II he was an army photographer. The Perry Library housed the Clark T. Rice collections.

SALVATION ARMY COUPLE IN POTTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA

This cabinet card is a portrait of a young couple in their Salvation Army uniforms. The woman is wearing a pin on her collar, and the man is wearing a hat that identifies them as Salvation Army members. There is a great deal of familiarity between the couple which is illustrated by the woman resting her hand and part of her arm on the man’s shoulder. An elderly couple pose for this cabinet card portrait. They have dressed up in their finest clothing for their day at the photographic studio. Without much revealed emotion, the couple stare at the camera. There is no identifying information concerning the couple or the name and location of the photographic studio.

SALVATION ARMY COUPLE IN POTTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA

This cabinet card photograph features a couple dressed in Salvation Army Uniforms. They are likely a married couple considering the familiarity evident by the woman resting her hand on the mans shoulder. The man is holding his hat on his knee and is wearing a Salvation Army Badge. The photograph was taken at Lachman’s Studio in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. A photographic journal (1894) cites a studio called Isaac S. Lachman & Son located in Pottstown. Anthony’s Photographic Bulletin (1901) reports the “recent death” of Isaac Lachman.

An attractive and fashionable young couple pose for their portrait at the studio of D. E. Denniston in Laingsburg, Michigan.  The woman is wearing a belted dress with sleeves puffed at the shoulder, and the  gentleman is young, dark and handsome in his striped suit. SOLD

LOVELY COUPLE IN CAMDEN, MAINE

A wasp waisted woman and a mustachioed man pose for their portrait at the studio of William V. Lane, in Camden, Maine.  The woman is clearly wearing a corset. The photographer, Lane (1849-1903) came to Camden and opened his gallery in 1883. He also had a branch gallery in Vinalhaven, Maine.  He stayed in Camden for 15 years; and then moved to Boston, Massachusetts. While in Camden, Lane was the Chairman of the Board of Assessors and in that capacity, he promoted a new opera house in town.  Lane also served as the President of the Business Men’s Association and had a one year stint as Road Commissioner. HUSBAND AND WIFE POSE FOR INDIVIDUAL PORTRAITS IN KEOKUK, IOWA

A very handsome couple pose for individual portraits at Libby’s New Photograph Parlors in Keokuk, Iowa. The reverse of the card has a penciled inscription indicating the location was Keokuk, and research confirms that Libby’s was located there. This couple is beautifully dressed and have stylish hairstyles. They have the appearance of prominent citizens of Keokuk. It is also possible that they are important visitors to the town.

BRIDE AND GROOM IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

This photograph captures a pretty bride and handsome groom. It is possible that this couple are attendants in a wedding but the woman appears to be wearing a wedding gown. If she is the maid of honor, one must pity the  bride because this attractive maid of honor likely upstaged her. The couple has four different flower arrangements in this photograph. The photographic studio responsible for this image is Sander’s & Gross located in Chicago, Illinois.

JOHN AND MINERVA SUMMERS: ATTRACTIVE COUPLE IN FORT RECOVERY, OHIO

John and Minerva Summers pose for their portrait at the studio of Harry McDaniel (1868-?) in Fort Recovery, Ohio. The couple is beautifully dressed for this cabinet card portrait. The photographer, McDaniel, was boorn in Gibson City, Illinois. He was known to be an active photographer in Fort Recovery around 1900. Fort Recovery is a very old town. It was established by the US Army in 1794.
