PRETTY WOMAN ON THE ROCKS (1932 REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

A very pretty woman sits on the rocks and poses for this splendid vintage real photo postcard portrait. The woman sits on the rocks along the shore of an unidentified body of water. The young woman is wearing a summer dress and has a parasol beside her. It is amazing to me how, dressed in a relatively tame fashion, she is just as attractive as any scantily clad model that appears in the Sports Illustrated bathing suit issue. I will admit, that the photographer most certainly posed her to reveal her partially uncovered calves. I guess sexual provocativeness sells postcards as well as magazines. This postcard has a message that is dated 1932. It was published by L. Bergeret of Paris, France. I don’t know if there is a connection between L. Bergeret and Albert Bergeret (1859-1932). Albert was a leading French postcard producer in France who operated in the city of Nice. In 1900 he produced 25 million cards and by 1903 he published 75 million postcards. I am wondering if L Bergeret may have been a successor to Albert Bergeret. L. Bergerets images seem to cluster in the 1930’s.

FAMILY OF FIVE AND A ROLLING HOOP IN STRASBOURG, FRANCE (CABINET CARD)

A well dressed family of five pose for their portrait at Emile Lorson’s photographic studio in France. The business was located in the town of either Strasbourg or Schlettstadt (now known as Selestat). The father of this family is not pictured. Perhaps he is away or deceased. The family in the photograph includes a mother, three sons, and a daughter. The oldest boy is holding his mother’s arm while she is supporting her daughter’s position on the wall. The youngest boy is holding a toy rolling hoop. Note his high top shoes. An inscription on the reverse of the photograph states ” Uncle Michael’s 3 Boys”. I wonder why there is no mention of the little girl? Possibly, she did not survive to the point in time that the inscription was written. Once again, I ask, “Where is Uncle Michael”? The answers to my questions are lost to history.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MOTHER AND HER THREE CHILDREN

This cabinet card provides a portrait of a lovely young mother and her three small children. Some viewers may disagree and opine that the photograph an image of four siblings. The oldest child in this photograph is holding a hat by his side and his mother is holding a fan. Not the little girl’s hair band. The family in this image is unidentified and the location of the studio that produced the cabinet card is unknown. I would hypothesize that the studio was European. It appears that the photographer’s or the studio’s name was “Melanie” which is a name of French origin.

PORTRAIT OF A BELGIAN SOLDIER IN LEOPOLDSBURG, BELGIUM

This vintage real photo postcard features a uniformed Belgian soldier. He is holding a pair of white gloves and a riding crop. Note the soldiers shiny boots and the overcoat which he has draped over his shoulders. Note that soldier is wearing spurs. He is a cavalry officer. Printing on the reverse of the postcard indicates that the photographer was the LUX studio in Leopoldsburg, Belgium. LUX was also the name of a French postcard publisher and the spelling of Leopoldsburg printed on the card is in French. Therefore, I am unsure which explanation concerning LUX is true. What I do know is that the town of Leopoldsburg is located in the Belgian Province of Limburg. This postcard dates to the 1920’s. Hopefully, a visitor to the Cabinet Card Gallery will be able to translate the message on the postcard and leave a comment informing other visitors to the blog.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF SWISS BOXER ANDRE SIMETH (VINTAGE REAL PHOTO POSTCARD)

This vintage real photo postcard features champion Swiss boxer, Andre Simeth. This postcard is part of a series (no. 26) entitled “Les Vedettes du Ring” (Stars of the Ring). In the course of his career, Simeth won 39 fights, lost 55 , and had 16 draws. He won 13 fights, and lost 16 fights by knockout. He was born in 1902 and made his debut in 1919. Simeth fought as a lightweight and at times held the Swiss lightweight title. The photographer of this portrait is Felix Bonnet who operated a studio in Paris, France. The postcard was published by Ajax.

FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPHER SHOOTS FAMOUS POLITICIAN: PORTRAIT OF THEODOR TANTZEN BY CHARLES REUTLINGER (CARTE DE VISITE)

This carte de visite image features German politician Theodor Johann Tantzen. The photographer who took this portrait of Mr. Tantzen was the celebrated photographer, Charles Reutlinger (1816-1881). Theodor Johann Tantzen (1834-1893) was from a political family in the Oldenburg State. His father was a member of parliament. Two of Theodor’s children became important political figures. His son, also named Theodor, became Prime Minister of Oldenburg. Tantzen’s grandson was philosopher Karl Jaspers (1883-1969). Theodor Tantzen grew up in Heering and at age twenty-one, he took over his fathers farm. In 1866 he was elected to the Oldenburg parliament. He remained in parliament for several terms and in fact died while still a parliament member. While in parliament he served in a number of other political roles. Now some words about the photographer. Charles Reutlinger was also part of a prominent and talented family. Charles Reutlinger was of German descent and founded the Reutlinger Photography Studio in Paris in 1850. The studio took photographs of many of the city’s rich and famous residents and visitors until 1937. The British Journal of Photography (1867) provides a wonderful description of Reutlinger’s studio. Charles’s brother Emile took over the studio in 1880 and he ran it until 1890. Emile’s son, Leopold took over in 1890 and among his accomplishments was that he developed the company’s esteemed and economically successful postcard business. The studio became known for it’s unusual art nouveau style of postcard designs. These were very notable in it’s portraits of actresses. Leopold also introduced risque/erotic postcards. He operated the business until losing an eye in an accident with a champagne cork in 1930. He died seven years later.

GROUP PHOTO OF FRENCH SOLDIERS IN NORTH AFRICA (WORLD WAR I ERA)

This vintage real photo postcard features a group of uniformed French soldiers in Northern Africa. The sign they are holding,”Honneur Aux Bleus” reveals some interesting information. There is a related French military slogan that states “Honneur aux anciens, courage aux bleus”. This roughly translates to “honor to the old soldiers, courage for the rookies”. In French, “bleu” means “rookie”. In 1793, rookies wore blue uniforms while more veteran soldiers wore white uniforms. Note that three of the men have canteens and one of the soldiers is holding a cup of coffee. This postcard appears to date back to the 1910’s (World War I era).

BEAUTIFUL FRENCH THEATRE ACTRESS MISS LILLIANE WEARING A POLKA DOT BIKINI

This vintage real photo postcard features French stage actress Miss Lilliane wearing a turn of the century bikini, kerchief, and cape. She is dressed and posed in a risque manner. The photograph was taken by Walery of Paris, France. Stanislaw Julian Ignacy, Count Ostrorog (1863-1935) followed in the footsteps of his father Stanislaw Ostrorog (1830-1890) to become a photographer. He also kept his father’s “photographer name”. The senior Ostorog had changed his name to “Stanislaw Walery” for professional purposes. The last name of “Walery” was derived from his wife’s name, “Waleria”. The elder Walery had set up his London studio in 1883. The postmark is from Brotteaux, France. Brotteaux is a neighborhood in Lyon, France. It is located between the Rhone River and the railway.   (SOLD)

A pretty young woman, with her hands on her hips, poses in her bathing suit at a French beach. She flashes a sweet smile at the photographer. Note her bathing cap. An inscription on the reverse of this vintage real photo postcard indicates that the photo was taken in 1933 in Orival, France. Located in the Seine-Maritime department, Orival is in Northern France. The village is in the woods and situated on the banks and cliffs of the river Seine. This image is a particularly nice French beach photo.  (SOLD)

PRETTY LITTLE GIRL ON THE DAY OF HER FIRST COMMUNION IN THOUARS, FRANCE (CARTES DE VISITE)

This cartes de visite features a long haired pretty young girl having her portrait taken on the day of a religious ceremony (first communion). Note the roses on her long veil and her necklace. She is has a cross which can be seen on the forefront of her dress on the right side of the photograph. She also has a purse. The girl is wearing white gloves and is holding a small bible. The photographer of this CDV is A. Chevy. He operated a studio in Thouars, France.  (SOLD)
