POW CAPT. JAMES R. SHIVELY USAF : HANOI 1967 : TWO NVA SOLDIERS : PRESS PHOTO

This item is an original c1967 Cold War–era press photograph distributed by the Hungarian news agency MTI Külföldi Képszolgálat. This powerful image shows Captain James Richard Shively, U.S. Air Force, being presented before journalists in Hanoi, flanked by North Vietnamese guards, following the shoot-down of his F-105 Thunderchief fighter-bomber during Operation Rolling Thunder. The translated printed Hungarian caption below the image reads: “Hanoi. At a press conference they presented James R. ‘Sayveli’ (Texas-born) flight lieutenant, pilot of one of the downed American bombers.” (Hungarian press agencies often rendered foreign names phonetically; ‘Sayveli’ correctly refers to James R. Shively.) Shively was born in 1942 in Wheeler, Texas. He graduated from the United States Air Foce Academy in 1964. He was shot down in May of 1967 near Hanoi on his 69th combat mission with the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron based at Takhli, Thailand. He was held in the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” for nearly six years, enduring brutal torture and starvation. He was released in February of  1973 during Operation Homecoming. He received silver star and multiple service medals. After the war he earned a law degree from Gonzaga, became a federal prosecutor, and served as Interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington. He died exactly 33 years to the day after his release. The year of his death was 2006.  (SOLD)

A DAY AT THE BEACH FOR EIGHT BATHERS IN TOKAJ, HUNGARY

Eight bathers gather for their group photo at a beach in Tokaj, Hungary. The historical town is located in the northern part of Hungary. It is in the district where Tokaji wine is produced. The beach goers are wearing bathing suits. Half of the subjects are sitting in a beached rowboat.The reverse of this vintage real photo postcard indicates that the message was written in 1927. It appears that seven of the individuals in the photo are identified in the column on the right side of the back of the postcard. Perhaps a visitor to the cabinet card gallery will be able to leave a comment translating the postcard’s message.   SOLD

AGNES ESTERHAZY : HUNGARIAN SILENT FILM ACTRESS : ROSS VERLAG : RPPC 1925

This vintage real photo postcard features Hungarian film actress Agnes Esterhazy (1891-1956). She is quite pretty and is dressed in flapper fashion. Esterhazy predominately appeared in Austrian and German films. In total, her IMDb filmography includes 32 films between 1918 and 1943. Her parents were a Count and Countess. She married actor Fritz Schulz in 1910. He was 14 years old and she was 19 years of age. I am sure there is an interesting story there and a lot of material for armchair psychologists to hypothesize about. After World War I, the pair lived in Budapest and Agnes began acting lessons. She made her film debut in 1918 and many more roles followed. During her career she acted alongside Harry Liedtke, Hanni Weisse, Asta Nielsen and Greta Garbo. Agnes mostly played supporting roles but she also played some leading roles. Esterhazy’s career virtually ended with the arrival of sound films. After her retirement from film, she she acted at various theaters, many of which were in Ostrava (Czech Republic). Esterhazy’s husband (Fritz Schulz) was arrested by the Nazis and held in a Vienna prison. His crime was that he was Jewish. Esterhazy was able to get him released in the Spring of 1938. This portrait postcard was published by Ross Verlag (Berlin). The postcard is part of a series (no.776/6). Esterhazy’s photograph was taken by celebrity photographer, Alex Binder (Berlin). The card is posted and has a stamp that was issued by Yugoslavia in 1921. The message on the postcard is dated 1925.  (SOLD)

KATHE VON NAGY : HUNGARIAN ACTRESS, DANCER, SINGER & MODEL : PHOTO BY YVA : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features Hungarian actress, singer, dancer, and model, Kathe von Nagy (1904-1973). She performed in both German and French films. Her father was a wealthy bank manager. At the age of sixteen, Nagy wanted to get married but her parents did not approve and sent her to a convent near Vienna, Austria. She stayed there 18 months but finished school elsewhere. Nagy wanted to become an author. She moved to Budapest and wrote articles for a magazine. She became interested in acting and enrolled in an acting school near Budapest. Her parents were none to pleased about her career choices and she was encouraged to return home where she worked in her father’s bank and secretly wrote novels. When she was about 22 years old, she moved to Berlin to pursue a career in film and worked for a Hungarian newspaper. She  was given a role in a 1927 comedy film and by 1928, she began starring in films and was considered one of Europe’s top up and coming film actresses. She became a highly successful film actress. The IMDb reports that she appeared in 57 films between 1915 and 1952. She basically retired from film during the second world war. The head of the SS., Heinrich Himmler asked Nagy to be the face and body for “sex dolls” provided to German soldiers. The premise was that the use of such dolls would lessen the syphilis problems encountered by many of the soldiers. Nagy refused the offer. This story may be apocryphal. This postcard was published by Ross Verlag as part of a series (no.6085/2). Nagy’s photo was taken by the Yva studio located in Berlin, Germany.  The name Yva is a pseudonym. The photographer was actually a woman named Else Ernestine Neulander-Simon (1900-1944). She was a German Jewish photographer and was well known for her “dreamlike, multiple exposed images”. She was a leading Berlin photographer during the Weimar Republic years of Germany. She specialized in fashion, nudes, and portraiture. Later, she became involved in the early days of producing photographs for advertising. Many of her photographs were published in magazines or were shown in international exhibitions. After the Nazis took power, she was forced to work as a radioagrapher (ie x-ray technician). In 1936 she was offered a job by Life Magazine, but her husband convinced her that life for German Jews would improve over time. He did not want to move and start a new life in a country where he did not speak the language. Unfortunately, she complied with his wishes. In 1938, Nazi regulations prohibited her from working as a photographer. In 1942, the Gestapo deported her and her husband to a death camp (probably Majdanek) where they were murdered.  SOLD

BEAUTIFUL LITTLE GIRL : TRADITIONAL CLOTHING : VIENNA, AUSTRIA : VICTOR ANGERER

This cabinet card is absolutely special. Esteemed photographer, Victor (Viktor) Angerer (1839-1894) captures a lovely young girl in her beautiful traditional costume. She is holding a small fan and wearing a fantastic scarf and hairband. I am uncertain about what ethnicity is represented by the girl’s garb. Mr Angerer was a talented and famous photographer. The Austrian photographer was the brother of another highly respected photographer, Ludwig Angerer. Ludwig mentored his brother as a photographer and at one point, the two brothers were partners. Victor opened his own studio in Vienna (1862) and later opened two more. Their locations were Budapest, Hungary; and in the Spa town of Ischl, Austria. Images by Victor are more difficult to find than images by Ludwig. Victor took a number of photographs of the royal family. Perhaps this cabinet card is one of them. Laura Tomicek wrote a thesis about Victor Angerer during her studies at the University of Vienna. She describes him as an important photographer of the 19th century. She reports that he introduced a new photographic style during the last two decades of his life. He focussed on “street life”. That style is similar to “Street Photography” of today. Tomicek states that his photographs during that time “represent an important historical source” about public life in Vienna at the before the turn of the century. SOLD

ILA LOTH : HUNGARIAN SILENT FILM ACTRESS : UNCOMMON RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features Hungarian film actress, Ila Loth (1900?-1975). She had 27 film appearances between 1918 and 1922. Some sources report that she appeared in a few films decades later than 1922, in the sound era. This postcard’s photograph presents Miss Loth driving an antique car. Note her driving gloves. This uncommon postcard was published by “City”. (SOLD)

PAULAY ERZSI : HUNGARIAN FILM AND THEATER ACTRESS : HARP : STAGE FRIGHT : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features Hungarian stage and film actress, Erzsi Paulay (1886-1959). Her parents were both actors. Her father died when she was eight years of age and her mother had to return to work. Erzsi was known to possess exceptional beauty and spoke very well. She graduated from the Academy of Drama (1904) and joined the National Theater. Erzsi had a problem. She was an excellent actress during rehearsals but when it came to performing in front of an audience, her performance was weak.Her apparent stage fright kept her from becoming an excellent actress. However, she was popular among her colleagues. After her first marriage failed she married Italian ambassador Count Vittorio Cerrutti in 1923. She then retired from acting. She and her husband travelled the world. The pair lived in Tokyo, Moscow and Rome. The IMDb credits her with five film roles between 1915 and 1928. This real photo postcard is in good condition. AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN UNIFORMED OFFICER & HIS YOUNG DAUGHTER : WORLD WAR I : 1917 RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features a uniformed Austro-Hungarian army soldier posing with his young child. I believe the soldier holds the rank of Corporal in the military. This photo was taken in 1917; during World War I. One can’t help but wonder what the impact of the war was on both father and child. This photo postcard has light corner wear and is in overall good condition (see scans).

SEDATE MOM POSES WITH HER POSSESSED DAUGHTER

This vintage real photo postcard features a mother and daughter and a bench. Mom is sitting on and the little girl is standing on the bench. The child is directing an eerie stare at the photographer. Note 1) the child’s cute socks, 2) mom’s hat hanging on the armrest of the bench, and 3) the small pail on the bench in front of the little girl (there are roosters painted on the pail). I believe that this postcard is Hungarian based on a “google translate” search of the word “Kapta” which appears on the reverse of the card. This vintage postcard is in good condition (see scans).

MISS SARI PETRASS : BEAUTIFUL HUNGARIAN SINGER AND ACTRESS WHO BECAME AN INTERNATIONAL STAR (TWO REAL PHOTO POSTCARDS)

Sari Petrass (1888-1930) was a Hungarian operetta actress and singer. She played leading soprano parts during the 1910’s and 1920’s. She appeared all over the globe. She gave performances in Budapest, Vienna, London, and Broadway. In 1911 she made her debut as a lead singer in a show in Budapest. The show became an international hit. Petrass wasted little time learning to sing in English. She performed in “Gipsy Love” (1912) at England’s Daly’s Theatre. The show ran for 299 performances. She next appeared at Daly’s in “The Marriage Market” (1913). This postcard features her in the role of “Mariposa Gilroy” in that show. She appeared alongside Gertie Millar. Interestingly, Petrass was a skillful horse rider and had an opportunity to ride a donkey in the opening scene of the play. The show ran for 423 performances. A photo from the show can be seen below. Sari Petrass and her costar, Robert Michaelis are seen in the photograph.  In 1916, Petrass was the subject of a rumor in America. It was falsely reported that she was executed in Hungary for being a British spy during World War 1. It was “fake news”. In late 1916, she moved to New York where she starred in “Miss Springtime” at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway. In 1917, she married a Long Island stock broker named Felix Augustus Eugene Sommerhoff. Sommerhoff was the nephew of composer Robert Schumann. Petrass continued performing after her marriage. In 1930, Sari Petrass and a friend (Lady Horne) were killed in an accident while in Belgium. Their chaufffeur was attempting to drive onto a ferry but he was blinded by beam from a lighthouse and crashed into the Scheldt River. Both Petrass, and her friend, died from drowning.                                                                                                                               

Postcard 1 is part of the “Arcadian Series” (no. A 67). The publisher was formerly The Arcadia Bazaar Co and was also known as the A B Company based in Ramsgate, England. Petrass was a sitter in six portraits in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. The photographer of this image is Rita Martin. Miss Martin was well known for her expertise in taking portraits of theater stars and other celebrities. The message on the reverse of the postcard is signed in a cute manner, “Heaps of Love, Lucy”. Postcard 2 is a close-up portrait of Miss Petrass. Her beauty is captured in this photograph by Rita Martin. The postcard is published by Beagles Postcards as part of a series (no. 218 K). The publishing house was located in London, England.  (SOLD)
