This carte de visite portrait features a handsome well dressed young man. The cdv photograph was taken by William Emmons Greenleaf Worthley (1836-1901). He operated a photo studio in Lewiston, Maine. He had worked previously in Yarmouth and Brunswick, Maine. This photograph is in very good condition (see scans).

WELL DRESSED MAN POSING IN FAUX GARDEN : PORTLAND OREGON : CYKO : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features a well dressed gentleman sitting in a photo studio’s faux garden. The photograph was taken at the Cal Calvert “10 Minute” Mazeograph Studio. The logo on the reverse of the card labels Mr Calvert as the “Postcard Man”. The gallery was located in Portland, Oregon. The stamp box on this postcard reveals that it was published by Cyko. (SOLD)

This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of a handsome young man. He is well dressed. Note his comfy looking overcoat and his wonderfully worn hat. This postcard was purchased in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The stamp box on this postcard indicates that it was published by K Ltd., sometime between 1918 and 1936. The postcard is in good condition (see scans).

TWO HANDSOME YOUNG MEN WEARING CAPS

This vintage real photo postcard features two handsome young men wearing caps. They are sporting a “dressy casual” look as seen by their open at the top shirts and their collars draping over the lapels of their sport jackets. Writing on the reverse of the photograph reveals that one of the boy’s names is Andre. Unfortunately I am unable to decipher the handwriting to uncover his last name. The writing also appears to include the year that the photograph was taken,  “1942-1943”. This postcard falls in the rare category, it comes from a private studio and had very limited production.   SOLD

HANDSOME YOUNG MAN : HIS UNIFORM AND MEDAL ARE MYSTERIES TO ME

A handsome young man poses for his portrait at an unknown studio. He is in uniform, but what kind of uniform is he wearing? Is he in the military? I don’t think so. There are no patches indicating rank; nor are there any other insignias revealing a military identity. However, there is the matter of the medal that he is wearing on the flap of his shirt pocket. It certainly looks military to me. Then again, he is wearing a bow tie which argues against his uniform being military issued. The clothing that he is wearing seems appropriate for someone who is spending time in a jungle or heavily wooded environment. His soft hat and the accessory that he is wearing above his shoes may be worn in such a setting. The tied wraps around the bottom of his pant’s legs are something that I have seen worn by bicyclists of this era. Its purpose was to keep one’s pant’s legs from becoming entangled in the spokes of the bicycle wheels and causing a nasty spill. Does the gentleman in this photograph use a bicycle in his work? If so, where is the bike? I have lots of questions, and unfortunately, no answers. I need some help on this one. Hopefully a Cabinet Card Gallery visitor will be able to provide more information about this photo. Guesses are welcome too. The AZO stamp box on the reverse of this postcard indicates that the card was published sometime between 1904 and 1918. This vintage photograph has excellent clarity and is in good condition (see scans).

A HANDSOME GENTLEMAN IN VIENNA (CARTE de VISITE)

This carte de visite portrait features a handsome well dressed gentleman with a carefully manicured beard and mustache. The photographer of this cdv photo is Rudolf Krziwanek (1843-1905). He operated a photographic studio in Vienna, Austria between 1870 and 1905. He also ran a summer studio in Ischl (Austria) between 1879 and 1900. He took portraits of the Hapsburg Court. His photographs are part of the collections in the J. Paul Getty Museum, the National Portrait Gallery (UK), and the New York Public Library. At this point in time, there are three of Krziwanek’s photos in the Cabinet Card Gallery. Krziwanek was also an inventor. In 1905, he received a patent for a device which was used in an “air gas system”. He committed suicide that same year. Print on the reverse of the photograph states that the studio was next to the Cafe Weghuber, a popular coffeehouse. The establishment was in business between 1806 and 1865. It was founded as Cafe Eichhorn and renamed Cafe Weghuber in about 1840. Later, a park was built in front of the cafe and it became a venue for concerts and large parties. Since the Cafe Weghuber went bankrupt in 1865, it is safe to say that this photo was taken before 1865. This carte de visite photograph has excellent clarity and is in excellent condition (see scans).

HANDSOME FASHIONABLE GENTLEMAN IN VIENNA AUSTRIA (CABINET CARD)

This cabinet card portrait features a handsome and well dressed gentleman in Vienna, Austria. He looks like he stepped off the pages of Gentleman’s Quarterly. The photographer of this image is Salomon Weitzmann (1866-1912). He was born in the Ukraine and died in Vienna. He was a talented lensman and one of the Cabinet Card Gallery’s favorite photographers. In fact, this photograph is the fifth Weitzmann image to appear in the Gallery’s collection. This antique photograph has excellent clarity and is in good condition (see scans). SOLD

PORTRAIT OF AN OLDER FARM WORKER (HE IS OUTSTANDING IN HIS FIELD)

This vintage photograph features an older man who appears to be a farm worker. He has a rugged and weathered face. I believe that his countenance  projects wisdom and gentleness. It is easy to see that he is a man that has worked with his hands. His work boots are very worn from his labor in the fields. Although I am no expert at farming equipment, I believe that the tool that he is holding, is a hoe. Note the stone wall behind the worker as well as the adjacent (barbwire?) fence.  This photo measures about 4 3/4″ x 6 5/8″ and is in very good condition. The top right hand corner has a tiny chip (see scans).  SOLD

PORTRAIT OF TWO WELL DRESSED YOUNG MEN

The gentleman on the lower rail is wearing a suit that is swimming on him. The suit is so over sized that it likely belonged to the studio, and was borrowed by the young man for the photograph. The Cyko stamp box indicates that this postcard dates to sometime between 1904 and the 1920’s.   SOLD
