This cabinet card features a soldier posing in uniform at the studio of Edward E. Coatsworth (1841- ?) in Syracuse, New York. The soldier is from the era of the Spanish American War. It is my hope that the vast unpaid research department of the Cabinet Card Gallery will be able to provide more exact information about the time period of this photograph as well as specific information about his unit. Based on his badges, it is my guess that he served in the infantry and that he was in the 203rd regiment and company K. The 203rd Infantry Regiment of the New York Volunteers was a Spanish American War unit. It served its term of service within the continental United States. Company K was formed from the 16th Separate Company of Catskill, New York The crossed rifle insignia was the cap badge of the U.S. Army Infantry. In 1898, the badge was moved to the collar of the military uniform. Underneath the crossed rifles badge on his hat is another badge and hopefully someone can identify it and leave a comment with an explanation. It is interesting to note the polka dot handkerchief the infantryman is wearing around his neck. Coatsworth was once partners with Frank G. Smith in operating a photographic studio in Syracuse (1889-1894). (SOLD)

NAVAL CASUALTY MEMORIAL CARD FOR BRITISH SAILOR (HONG KONG, 1912)
This cabinet card is a memorial photograph of J. W. Stubbs who was accidentally killed in Hong Kong. Stubbs was a stoker (tended to the engine) aboard the H.M.S. Astraea. He died in 1912 and this cabinet card was made by his shipmates in his memory. The image of this smiling and handsome 20 year-old sailor, who died tragically, evokes much sadness. The Astraea was a cruiser of the Royal Navy. She was commissioned for service in 1895 and was active in World War I. She was scrapped in 1920. The photographer who made this memorial card was A. Hing of Hong Kong. (SOLD)
A SHIP CAPTAIN IN PANAMA : IDENTIFIED AS W. C. GIBB : CALM STUDIO : CABINET CARD
This photograph features a ship captain posing at the Calm Studio, located at the Plazuela De Alfaro in Panama. The card is inscribed to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson and signed by W. C. Gibb. The captain is wearing a nautical uniform and it is unknown whether he is a military or a civilian sailor. Research reveals that the Alfaro Plaza may be named after Jose Eloy Alfaro Delgado (1842 -1912) who was a President of Ecuador who was a strong opponent of pro Catholic conservatism and whose views and actions caused him to be exiled to Panama in 1911. A year later he returned to Ecuador, where he was imprisoned; and then taken from the prison by a mob and executed. SOLD
GENERAL HORACE PORTER, CIVIL WAR HERO, PRESIDENTIAL ADVISOR, AND DIPLOMAT
The subject of the photograph is Horace Porter, who was quite an accomplished man who played an integral part in American history. Horace Porter (1837-1921) is most well known for his activities during the civil war. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel, Ordnance Officer, and Staff Officer in the Union Army. In 1866 he was appointed brevet Brigadier General in the U. S. Army. He was also personal secretary to General and President Ulysses S. Grant and to General William Sherman. Later, he was the Vice President of the Pullman Palace Car Company and the United States ambassador to France (1897-1905). Horace Porter was born in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He was the son of David R. Porter who who served as Pennsylvania’s Governor. His cousin, Andrew Porter was a Mexican-American War veteran and Union Army Brigadier General. Horace Porter was educated at Harvard University and graduated from West Point in 1860. He was distinguished in the Battle of Fort Pulaski (Georgia), Chickamauga, the Battle of the Wilderness, and New Market Heights. He received the Medal of Honor for his efforts at Chickamauga. He later wrote a memoir “Campaigning With Grant” (1897). The photographer of this cabinet card portrait is Joseph G. Gessford. Gessford (1875-1925) operated a prominent New York City studio located at 288 Fifth Avenue. Gessford was best known as a photographer of celebrities and socialites during the first two decades of the twentieth century. He photographed Mark Twain in 1904, and when the author requested gratis copies of the portraits, Gessford famously replied, “I could no more afford to give you these pictures than you can afford to write books for free.” SOLD

This vintage photograph features five African American US soldiers wearing their dress uniforms. They are World War II era soldiers. Note the aviator sun glasses worn by the soldier at the furthest left side of the image. This photograph is almost certainly one-of-a-kind. The photograph measures about 5 x 7 inches. (SOLD)

This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of a Belgian soldier sitting in his parent’s garden. He appears to be writing a letter. A framed cabinet card photograph is atop the table in front of him. The photograph captures a family portrait and individual photographs of members of the soldier’s family. It is likely that the pictured individuals are the soldier, his wife, and their two children. The soldier is identified on the reverse of the card as Paul Coppenyns. This vintage real photo postcard features a handsome World War I era uniformed soldier posing for an outside portrait He is well equipped with a rifle, haversack, cartridge belt, and high boots. He has been identified as a US dough boy but this has not been confirmed. The message on the card indicates that he is from an English speaking country. The message on the card is light hearted. The soldier asks how he looks in his uniform adorned with his equipment. He is especially interested in the reader’s reaction to his mustache. SOLD
I’M YOUR CAPTAIN, I’M YOUR CAPTAIN, NAVAL OFFICER IN PORTSMOUTH, GREAT BRITAIN
A naval captain sits for his portrait at the studio of W. V. Amey in Portsmouth, Great Britain. I am uncertain about his rank. Perhaps a visitor to this page can provide helpful information to determine his rank and country of origin. Portsmouth was a significant naval port for centuries, including at the time of this photograph. The photographer advertises that his studio was patronized by the late Majesty Queen Victoria which confirms that the photograph was taken after 1901; the year of her death. This portrait cabinet card is in good condition (see scans).

This cartes de visite features a portrait of a handsome young German soldier. He looks sharp in his uniform. The photographer of this image is L. Minzloff and his studio was located in Leipzig-Gohlis, Germany. Gohlis is in the northwest part of Leipzig that was absorbed by Leipzig in 1890. This CDV is in very good condition.

BISHOP HUNTINGTON : HARVARD : BY NAPOLEON SARONY : CABINET CARD
The distinguished gentleman is this photograph is Frederic Dan Huntington (1819-1904). He was an American clergyman and the first Protestant Episcopal bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York. He was born in Massachusetts and grew up on a farm. He was a graduate of Amherst College as well as Harvard Divinity School. He was the pastor of the South Congregational Church of Boston between 1842 and 1855. He then became a preacher to the University as well a a professor at Harvard. He next became the pastor of the newly established Emanuel Church in Boston. In 1869, he founded the St. John’s School in Manlius, New York. He served as president of the military school. Bishop Huntington was also known as the first president of the Church and for authoring several books. This photograph was taken by the renowned celebrity photographer, Napoleon Sarony. (SOLD)
