These vintage real photo postcards feature pretty American stage actress, Nell Carter (1894-1965). She shares the name of another American actress who arrived on the entertainment scene later than this Nell Carter. The second Nell Carter (1948-2003) was an American singer and actress. She is best known for her role in the television sitcom “Gimme a Break”. The Nell Carter pictured on this postcard hailed from Kansas City, Missouri. When she married and had a child, all three family members were involved in acting.  Her husband was actor Joe Yule (1892-1950) and her son was the celebrated actor, Mickey Rooney. Joe Yule was a Scottish-American burlesque and vaudeville comedian who transitioned into film career as a character actor. Yule and Carter married in 1919. Nell Carter, like her husband,  was a vaudevillian. She has also been described as a chorus girl and burlesque performer. The pair had a child in 1920 (Mickey Rooney) . In 1924, Yule and Carter separated and in 1925, she and her son moved to Hollywood. She appeared in one Broadway production, “When Crummies Played” (1928).

Postcard 1 was published by Rotary Photo as part of “The Rotary Photographic Series (no. 4037 L). The photographer was the Foulsham & Banfield Studio. Foulsham & Banfield were well known celebrity photographers. Frank Foulsham and A. C. Banfield operated a studio from the 1900’s through the 1920’s. The message on the reverse of this postcard indicates that the sender (Mabel) settled in buying this photo postcard to send to her friend. She writes that she wishes that she could have sent her a portrait postcard of English stage and film actress, Sybil Arundale.  (SOLD)

Postcard 2  was published by W. H. Midwinter & Co (Bristol, UK) as part of “The Bee Series”. The card was postmarked in 1907.  (SOLD)

The pretty actress seen on these vintage real photo postcards is Iris Hoey (1885-1979). She has a beautiful smile. Hoey was a British actress who performed in the first half of the twentieth century. She appeared in both stage and movie roles. Iris was born in London. Her father was a professor of economics. She began her career in straight theater and in musical comedies. Her first film appearance was in 1922. She was very active in the 1930’s working in film but still found time for theater. Th IMDb credits her with 20 acting roles in films. They range from 1922 to 1954. The IBDb reports that Hoey performed in two Broadway shows. Twelve portraits of Iris Hoey are part of the collection of Great Britain’s National Portrait Gallery. Hoey is considered to be among the prettiest actresses of her era.

STUDIO PORTRAIT : WORLD WAR I ERA SOLDIER : RIFLE : LIGHT HEARTED : VINTAGE RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features a handsome World War I era uniformed soldier posing for an outside portrait  He is well equipped with a rifle, haversack, cartridge belt, and high boots. He has been identified as a US dough boy but this has not been confirmed. The message on the card indicates that he is from an English speaking country. The message on the card is light hearted. The soldier asks how he looks in his uniform adorned with his equipment. He is especially interested in the reader’s reaction to his mustache. SOLD

ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL HOLDING A BOUQUET OF PINK ROSES : BELLE EPOQUE : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features an adorable little girl holding a bouquet of pink flowers. The girl is bright eyed and is flashing a beautiful smile. The French caption on the front of the card translates to “To Pay For Your Attention”. I believe that the card is a Thank-You card. The postcard was published by EPR as part of a series (No. 289). This real photo postcard is in overall good condition (see scans).

BERYL FABER : ENGLISH ACTRESS : WIFE OF PLAYWRIGHT COSMO HAMILTON

This vintage real photo postcard features English actress, Beryl Faber (?-1912). She made her stage debut in London in “The Masqueraders” (1894). She also acted in “Iris”, “His House in Order”, and “The Subjection of Kezia” (starring role). She wrote plays and playlets with her husband, playwright and novelist, Cosmo Hamilton. This postcard is in good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A LOVELY YOUNG WOMAN : FERDINAND FLODIN : STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of a lovely young woman. She is beautifully dressed and holding a parasol. This postcard photograph was taken by Ferdinand Flodin (1863-1935). He was a Swedish photographer who operated a studio in Stockholm. He was well known for his portrait work, especially of theatrical performers. He was educated in the United States from 1883 to 1887. For the next two years he ran a photography gallery in Worcester, Massachusetts. He then returned to Sweden. In 1906 he became secretary of the Swedish Photogaphers Association, a post he held nine years. This postcard was published by Axel Eliasson’s Art Publishers. The publishing house was founded in 1890 and the Stockholm company was the leading producer of postcards in Sweden for many years.  SOLD

THREE WOMEN ON MULES: BALANCED ROCK : GARDEN OF THE GODS : MANITOU, COLORADO

This vintage real photo postcard features three women on riding burros,  posing in front of Balanced Rock. The natural wonder is located within The Garden of the Gods. The photographer of this image is the Paul Goerke and Son studio, located in Manitou, Colorado. In the 1890’s, Goerke purchased the land around Balanced Rock. Goerke and his son, Curt, took photographs of tourists by the rock and sold them for 25 cents apiece. At the beginning of Goerke’s business there was no charge to view Balanced Rock. They made their money by charging for the portraits. Burros were among the props supplied by Goerke. This postcard has an Artura stamp box. The photo was taken sometime between 1908 and 1924.  (SOLD)

AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN : NICELY DRESSED : CINCINNATI, OHIO : RENSLER’S STUDIO

This vintage postcard features a portrait of an attractive African American woman. She stands behind a wall topped by a vase of flowers. She is wearing a shiny fabric dress and earrings. She looks regal. Her portrait was taken by Renslers studio, located in Cincinnati, Ohio. According to one historical Cincinnati blog, Rensler’s was one of the few photo studios in Cincinnati that accepted African American clients. The studio operated for 83 years and shut down in 1989. The AZO stamp box on this card indicates that the postcard dates back to between 1918 and 1930. SOLD
