PORTRAIT OF FOUR OLDER WOMEN AND TWO YOUNG NUNS OR NURSES

This vintage real photo postcard raises a lot of questions but not a lot of answers. On the surface, this looks like a portrait of four older women and two younger women dressed like nuns. The older women have a strong family resemblance and I am hypothesizing that they are sisters. Taking a closer look at the image, I can not be certain that the younger women are nuns. Their clothing looks more simple then I typically see in portraits of nuns of that era. However, there certainly could be cultural differences, as well as order differences, in regard to the habits worn by nuns around the world. I also question whether a nun, such as one of the young ladies in this portrait, would be wearing a pin, presumably attached to a pocket watch. I am also uncertain whether it would be expected that the two young ladies in this image are wearing closely similar, but not identical “habits”.  Is it possible that the two “nuns” are actually “nurses”? This portrait postcard was “found” in Vancouver, Canada. However, it was part of a collection of Scottish images. This real photo postcard is in excellent condition (see scans).

THE DOG THAT FOUND RELIGION : A PORTRAIT OF A PRIEST AND HIS SPANIEL

This vintage real photo postcard features a priest and his noble spaniel dog. This portrait was photographed by Albert Hester who operated a studio in London, England. Hester is mentioned in the British Journal of Photography (1910) for participating in a London exhibition. The card was published by Societe Industrielle de Photograpie (SIP) of Rueil, France.  SOLD

A PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN WEARING A LARGE CROSS IN BATAVIA, NEW YORK (CARTE DE VISITE)

This carte de visite is a photograph of a pretty young woman wearing a large chain and cross. She was photographed at the studio of C. W. Tallman (1833-1896), in Batavia, New York. The town is located in Genesee County and is in the West Central part of the state. Charles W. Tallman operated a gallery in Batavia between the 1870’s and 1905. He began his photography business in Lockport, New York (1866-1877). A number of his early photos were railroad related. Tallman was the first photographer in Batavia,  Some of Tallman’s photographs can be found in the George Eastman Museum and the New York Public Library collections. Tallman was an amateur astronomer and wrote about the subject. This cdv photograph is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A MENNONITE COUPLE

This vintage cabinet card photograph features a couple holding hands and posing for a photographer. Their style of clothing leads me to believe that they are Mennonites. The photographer of this photo is W. H. Farley. He operated photographic studios in Crete, Tampico, and Gibson, Illinois during the 1880’s. The cabinet card gallery has several photos by Farley. This cartes de visite portrait features a pretty young girl wearing her confirmation gown and holding a cross on a chain and bible. She is wearing white gloves and a necklace with a pendant. It appears that she has a small purse hanging from the front of her dress. This cdv photograph was taken by L. Bertrand at his studio in Dijon, France. Dijon is the capital city of the Burgundy region in eastern France. This area is one of the leading wine producing regions in France.   (SOLD)

A cute little girl in a frilly white dress poses for her portrait at the Gluck Auf studio in Malstatt-Burbach, Prussia. The girl is holding a bouquet of flowers and has a ribbon in her pretty curly hair. She is also wearing flowers in her hair. This carte de visite may be a communion photograph. She is standing in front of a backdrop with a simple rural scene. The studio’s home of Malstatt-Burbach was combined with two other towns in 1909 to form the city of Sarbrucken. In 1900 the town belonged to Prussia.

PORTRAIT OF LEE TONG: PASTOR OF THE BAPTIST CHINESE CHURCH IN PORTLAND OREGON

This photograph features a well dressed young Asian man sitting in a chair with his hat on his lap. He is is exhibiting an intense gaze at the photographer. On the reverse of this photograph is an inscription that informs us about the identity of this gentleman. His name is Lee Tong and he was a clergyman who attended the Eugene Bible University in Eugene, Oregon. The American Home Missionary (1913) journal lists him as a preacher. He also appears in the Portland directory as Reverend Lee Tong (1912-1914). A book entitled “Portland, Oregon: Its History and Builders” reports that he was the Pastor of the Baptist Chinese Church. Research reveals that the Eugene Bible College is now known as New Hope Christian College and it is located in Eugene. The school was founded by Fred Hornshuh in 1925. This photograph was taken at the Brown Studio in Portland, Oregon.

She is has a cross which can be seen on the forefront of her dress on the right side of the photograph. She also has a purse. The girl is wearing white gloves and is holding a small bible. The photographer of this CDV is A. Chevy. He operated a studio in Thouars, France.  (SOLD)

YOUNG GIRL IN A BEAUTIFUL DRESS AT A HER COMMUNION IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPH)

A pretty young girl is dressed in a beautiful white dress and veil for her portrait at the Borgia studio in Los Angeles, California. She looks like a young bride but she is but she is almost certainly dressed in her finest on the occasion of her communion. She looks quite proud as she poses for the camera. Note the necklace with a cross that she is holding in her left hand. Preliminary research revealed little about photographer F. Borgia although there are a number of collections that include his photographs. One citation was found. The book “Los Angeles’s Little Italy”, by Mariann Gatto, states that Nick Borgia (located on San Fernando Street) was one of three of Little Italy’s favorite photographers (the other two were Mr. Ricci and Mr. Del Beato). There is a disparity between first names (F. vs. Nick) but it is very likely that Nick could have been the photographers middle name or nickname. Did I really just say that Nick may be his “nickname”? This portrait measures 5″ x 7″ and has excellent clarity.

TWO YOUNG GIRLS PARTICIPATE IN RELIGIOUS CEREMONY IN READING, PENNSYLVANIA

Two cute young girls pose for a portrait capturing their participation in a religious ceremony in Reading, Pennsylvania. Note the crucifix and other religious objects in the photograph. The girls are well dressed and adorable. The photographer of this cabinet card portrait, John D. Strunk, was quite prolific and talented.
