PORTRAIT OF THE CITIZENS BAND OF NEWBERRY, PENNSYLVANIA

This vintage real photo postcard features a group portrait of the Citizens Band of Newberry, Pennsylvania. The community band members are all wearing full uniforms. This photograph was taken circa 1908. Newberry township is in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Newberry is a section of the town of Williamsport which is in central Pennsylvania. Williiamsport has been the home of the Little League World Series since 1947. The photographer of this band portrait is William Henry Holtzinger (1869-1933). Census data as well as Williamsport business directories indicate Holtzinger was a photographer as early as 1898, and as late as 1932. He died of chronic myocarditis in 1933. NINA WOOD : STAGE ACTRESS AND MUSIC HALL PERFORMER

This vintage real photo postcard features pretty stage actress Miss Nina Wood. She is wearing flowers in her hair. Note the length of her hair. The postcard was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (No. 1787A). Miss Woods photograph is by the Johnston & Hoffman studio. Theodore Julius Hoffmann and P. A. Johnston established a commercial photography studio in Calcutta (1882) and Darjeeling (1890). They also operated a studio in Simla. Johnston and Hoffmann’s photography business was the second largest commercial photography studio in India in that period. Many of their images were of North and Northeast India as well as Sikkim and Nepal. Johnston & Hoffmann produced many photographs of actors and actresses. It is certain that these performers did not travel to India to have their photo taken. It seems likely that Johnston & Hoffmann also had a studio in England during some part of their careers. This postcard is unposted and in very good condition (see scans).

AMERICAN STAGE ACTRESS – NELL CARTER (MOTHER OF MICKEY ROONEY)

These vintage real photo postcards feature pretty American stage actress, Nell Carter (1894-1965). She shares the name of another American actress who arrived on the entertainment scene later than this Nell Carter. The second Nell Carter (1948-2003) was an American singer and actress. She is best known for her role in the television sitcom “Gimme a Break”. The Nell Carter pictured on this postcard hailed from Kansas City, Missouri. When she married and had a child, all three family members were involved in acting.  Her husband was actor Joe Yule (1892-1950) and her son was the celebrated actor, Mickey Rooney. Joe Yule was a Scottish-American burlesque and vaudeville comedian who transitioned into film career as a character actor. Yule and Carter married in 1919. Nell Carter, like her husband,  was a vaudevillian. She has also been described as a chorus girl and burlesque performer. The pair had a child in 1920 (Mickey Rooney) . In 1924, Yule and Carter separated and in 1925, she and her son moved to Hollywood. She appeared in one Broadway production, “When Crummies Played” (1928).

Postcard 1 was published by Rotary Photo as part of “The Rotary Photographic Series (no. 4037 L). The photographer was the Foulsham & Banfield Studio. Foulsham & Banfield were well known celebrity photographers. Frank Foulsham and A. C. Banfield operated a studio from the 1900’s through the 1920’s. The message on the reverse of this postcard indicates that the sender (Mabel) settled in buying this photo postcard to send to her friend. She writes that she wishes that she could have sent her a portrait postcard of English stage and film actress, Sybil Arundale.  (SOLD)

Postcard 2  was published by W. H. Midwinter & Co (Bristol, UK) as part of “The Bee Series”. The card was postmarked in 1907.  (SOLD)

COEUR D’ ALENE, IDAHO : STREET SCENE : SHERMAN AVENUE : LOTS OF SIGNAGE AND CARS

This vintage chrome postcard features a street scene in Coeur D’ Alene, Idaho. This card is an uncommon view of Coeur D’ Alene. The town has the look of the Old West. In addition, there are many decorative flags hanging over the street. The card shows Sherman Avenue and the street is a busy one. Note the signage. There are two Coca Cola signs and signs for the Brunswick Cafe, WWP Electric Service, some Apartments and a barbershop pole. There is also a junction sign for Route 95 and Route 10.  The Brunswick Cafe sign is of a racist nature. The sign includes a cartoonish Native American holding a tomahawk. The cars on the street appear to be from the 1950’s. Check out the bus, as well as the red pick-up truck making a u turn further up the street. This postcard was published by Ross Hall Studios. The firm was located in Sandpoint, Idaho.  SOLD

This vintage photograph features a young woman posing for her portrait at the Davis & Howard studio in Boston, Massachusetts. Fred L. Davis and Everett E. Howard were photographers located at 352 Washington Street in Boston. Their studio was active between 1893 and 1895.The photograph measures 4.25 x 6 inches and is in good condition (see scans).

YOUNG EGYPTIAN WOMAN : SHEER HEAD COVERING : EGYPTOLOGY : ETHNOGRAPHY : RPPC

This vintage postcard features a pretty young Egyptian woman dressed in traditional costume. She is wearing a head and face covering hijab (veil).  The postcard was published by the celebrated ethnographic photography firm, Lehnert & Landrock. The company was located in Cairo Egypt. Rudolf Franz Lehnert (1878-1948) & Ernst Heinrich Landrock (1878-1966) were the principals of the firm.. Lehnert was of German origin, while Landrock was from Bohemia. The pair met in Switzerland and decided to go into business together. Lehnert was the photographer and Landrock was the administrator. Landrock organized trips, managed the photo studio and photo production, and marketed the photographs and prints. They were photographers in Tunis and in Egypt, They also opened studios in Munich (Germany) and Leipzig (Germany).  They produced many photographs from Egypt and Tunisia. Their first studio was in Tunis. They photographed monuments and sites in those countries, but were most known for their erotic images of Arab women, often posing in harem themes. Sometimes the photographers seemed more concerned about producing erotic photographs rather than documenting everyday life in these Middle Eastern countries. Lehnert and Landrock were well acclaimed for their work and the duo have images in a number of museums, including Philadelphia’s Penn Museum an the Musee de l’elysee in Lausanne, Switzerland.  SOLD

Jenny Jugo (1904-2001) was an Austrian actress. Her IMDb filmography reveals that she appeared in fifty-three films between 1925 and 1950. Jenny, as is evident in this vintage real photo postcard, was very beautiful. She was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her father owned a factory. She received her education in a convent. At age sixteen, she married actor Emo Jugo and the pair settled in Berlin, Germany. Their marriage was of short duration (1921-1922). She gave up her husband but not his last name. The German film studio, UFA, signed her to a contract in 1924. She struggled in the dramatic roles that she was given. By the end of the silent era, she was successful in comedies and specialized in that genre through the 1930’s. She often played perky, confident characters. She was often directed by Erich Engel. In 1935, Jugo played Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion. Writer, George Bernard Shaw was so happy with her performance that he invited her to act in all of his plays on the English stage. She made films during the Nazi regime until 1943, when she returned to her Bavarian home. She was in a relationship with film producer Eberhard Klagmann who worked on her final three post-war films. In 1950, she married actor and former co-star, Friedrich Benfer. She retired from acting at age forty-six. She was given a lifetime achievement award for her outstanding contribution to German cinema. The IMDb biography of Jugo describes her as a “lively brunet, dimple-cheeked actress with a tom-boyish, unaffected manner”. The writer of the biography contends that Jenny Jugo flirted with stardom but did not achieve it. This assessment may be too harsh. Postcard 1 was published by Ross Verlag and is part of the Luxusklasse series (no. 614).It is easily identifiable by the gold emblem on the reverse of the card.The postcard is larger than regular sized postcards. This vintage postcard measures about 4″ x 5 3/4″ and is in very good condition.   (SOLD)

 Postcard 2 features Miss Jugo in a risque pose. She is wearing what appears to be skimpy lingerie. Her pose and facial expression projects a “come hither” message. This vintage postcard was published by Iris Verlag as part of series (no. 5383). The photographer of this portrait is Erich Engel of Berlin, Germany. There was also a German film and theatre director named Erich Engel (1891 –1966) . As stated above, Engel directed Jugo many times. Engel is listed on the postcard for either being the photographer, or possibly the director of the film she was working on at the time. The reverse of this post card indicates that it once resided in an album. The card is in very good condition (see scans).

Postcard 3 was published by Ross Verlag as part of series (no. 5533/2). Miss Jugo’s  photographic portrait was taken by the Harlip studio, located in Berlin Germany. Gregory Harlip specialized in celebrity portraits. In 1937, Harlip left Berlin because of Nazi persecution. He relocated to London. Harlip died in 1945 and was succeeded by his wife who became one of the renowned society photographs of the 1950’s. She died in 1982. This portrait postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

THREE YOUNG BROTHERS AND THEIR SISTER : STANDING ON A STOOP : BROOKLYN, NEW YORK

This cabinet card portrait features three young boys and a young girl. They are presumably siblings. Note the youngest boy’s plaid bow.. Large enough? The children are standing on a stoop. The photographer of this image is the Ramus studio of Brooklyn, New York. There is nice art on the reverse of the card. (SOLD)

MARGUERITE CLARK : POPULAR AND PRETTY AMERICAN BROADWAY AND FILM STAR

These vintage real photo postcards feature pretty American stage and silent film actress, Marguerite Clark (1883-1940). She was a very popular actress of her time; only second to Mary Pickford in popularity. The two shared a “little girl look”. Marguerite was tiny. She was 4’11” and weighed only 90 pounds. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her father was a haberdasherer. After finishing school, at the age of 17, Marguerite made her Broadway debut. During her stage career (1900-1913), she appeared in sixteen Broadway plays. Marguerite was also a prolific screen actress. Between 1914 and 1921, she appeared in 40 films. She is noted for her film role in “Snow White” (1916). In 1918, she married plantation owner and millionaire businessman, Harry Palmerston Williams. Marguerite retired at age 38 in order to live a more traditIonal life with her husband. He died in 1936 in an airplane crash. Both of these portrait postcards were published by Kraus Mfg.  These postcard photograph was likely taken between 1910 and 1920.  (BOTH SOLD)
