PRETTY WOMAN AND BLACK LACE : CHICAGO, ILLINOIS : CABINET CARD
This cabinet card presents a pretty young woman posing for her portrait. She has curly hair and beautiful wide eyes. The photographer was John Kimball Stevens and his studio was located in the McVicker’s Theatre Building in Chicago, Illinois. An 1888 magazine advertisement for the studio states that one could buy 15 photographs, in three different styles, for the lowest price in town. That low price was three dollars. A 1905 advertisement indicates that the studio was established approximately 30 years earlier (1875) and by 1905 ha been taken over by Gibson, Sykes and Fowler. This cabinet card photograph is in fair condition (see scans).

PRETTY AND SHAPELY YOUNG WOMAN : ASSIST FROM A CORSET : BANGS : CABINET CARD
This Cabinet Card presents an attractive woman in a beautiful dress. She is wearing a “choker” necklace, a cross, and earrings. Note her somewhat unusual hairstyle and that she is wearing bangs. In addition, the woman in this portrait achieved an hour-glass type figure with an assist from a corset. A corset is a garment that was worn to mold a woman’s torso into a desired shape. Typically, corsets reduced the size of woman’s waist and exaggerated the size of their bust and hips. SOLD
CARTE de VISITE PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN : BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS : 1878
This carte de visite portrait features a pretty young woman. She is wearing a lace collar, earrings, and curls. She is identified by an accompanying note. Her name is “Nellie Smith”.She is posing for her portrait at the studio of E. S. Dunshee in Boston, Massachusetts. Photographer Edward Sidney Dunshee was born 1823 in Bristol, Vermont and died in 1907 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1857 he and Cornelius Dunshee (his father) were photographers in Falls River, MA. He produced ambrotypes and daguerrotypes there. He next operated out of New Bedford, MA. One of his New Bedford clients was Henry David Thoreau, who sat for a portrait in 1861. By 1873 he and Thomas Rice Burnham operated as Dunshee and Burnham in Boston, MA. Between 1873 and 1876 he and Edward Byron Dunshee were in business as E. S. Dunshee and Son and located on Tremont Row in Boston, MA. By 1880, Edward Sidney Dunshee had moved to Philadelphia and apparently, after some time, his son took over the business. It appears that E. S. Dunshee had his last studio in Trenton, New Jersey (1894-1901). This cdv is dated 1878. Dunshee’s photography resume is confusing because different sources offer slightly different histories. In addition, the fact that his father and son were photographers, further clouds the accuracy of his biographical material. Clearly some writers have confused and entangled each of the Dunshee’s life story. (SOLD)

PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN : ANTIQUE CHAIR : SNEAKERS : RPPC
This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty young woman sitting on an antique chair. Her shoes look like sneakers. This is possible because the first sneaker (running shoe) was invented in 1895. The young woman has bands around the cuffs of her sleeves which I imagine are meant to shorten the length of the sleeves. The woman appears to be in her teenage years. This divided back card dates back to around 1910. The postcard is in very good condition (see scans).
