BAD HAIR DAY IN WALLA WALLA, WASHINGTON

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 5410-2.jpg

She woke up in the morning and looked in the mirror. “Oh no”, she exclaimed! “I’m supposed to go down to Winchester and Bardo’s studio for a cabinet card portrait and I am having the worst hair day of my life”. Always a quick thinker, she took her shawl out of her bedroom chest of drawers, and placed it strategically over her head, covering most of her wild locks of hair.  She looked in the mirror, exited the front door, and with some apprehension, walked to the photography studio on First Street, in Walla Walla.  On the way to the photographer, she was approached by an inquisitive out of town visitor who asked her why the town was called Walla Walla.  She explained to the visitor that proud Walla Walla residents like to say that their town was so nice, that they named it twice.  She added that if the truth be told, Walla Walla is a Native American expression for “place of many waters”.   (SOLD)

This original carte de visite portrait features a well dressed pretty young woman She was photographed at the studio of renowned photographer, Karl Lutzel. His studio was located in Munich, Germany. There is an inscription on the reverse of the cdv. I had difficulty obtaining a complete translation. I believe that the inscription states that the woman in the photograph is the wife of Bernhard Fischer. It is also my theory that “Schraidy?” was her maiden name. I would appreciate any help with the translation. (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF MISS LIZZIE COOPERIDER (UPPER SANDUSKY, OHIO)

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is lizzie-2.jpg

The pretty woman with the large eyes in this portrait is identified on the reverse of the photograph as Miss Lizzie Cooperider. She is wearing a “layered look”. Note her unusual collar pin. The photograph was produced by McCahon’s Art Gallery in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. John McCahon was born in Ireland sometime around 1828. He was a photographer in central Ohio for more than 3 decades. He operated the Cottage Photograph Gallery in Roscoe and galleries in Utica (1870) and Westerville (1878). He opened a studio in Upper Sandusky in 1880 and the last stop of his journey as a photographer was in Newark (late 1880’s). In 1893 McCahon suffered a stroke and his wife Isabella and his daughters Bertha and W. Blanche assisted in continuing the operation of the studio. John McCahon died in 1896. His daughter W. Blanche (1864-1944) continued working as a photographer. After gaining valuable experience managing her fathers studio during his illness, she continued running the gallery until 1918. She then worked in a Mansfield, Ohio studio until she opened her own studio in Westerville as some time during the 1920’s and continued its operation until 1938. This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

PRETTY EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL : FUNKY DRESSER : LONDON, ENGLAND : 1902

An internet dictionary defines funky as ” modern and stylish in an unconventional or striking way”.  The pretty young lady in this cabinet card photograph is certainly dressed in a funky manner. She has a great smile and is remarkably well poised as she stands before the camera. Her scarf appears to be made of a fine fabric, and seems to be tied at the ends by ribbons. She is wearing an interesting belt with a decorative buckle. She is also wearing a terrific hat. Note her necklace and the brooch at her collar. A pencilled notation on the reverse of the cabinet card indicates that the young woman in the image is eighteen years of age and that the photograph was taken in 1902. The photographer was Edgar Salomon. He had a studio in two English cities; Highbury and London. This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY WOMAN : SHENANDOAH, IOWA : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card features a portrait of a pretty and fashionable young woman. This fashionista is wearing a dark dress with lace, earrings, collar pin, rings, and flowers in her hair and pinned to her lapel. Note her pocket watch. This cabinet card photograph was taken at the W. H. Brewer studio. The studio was located in Shenandoah, Iowa. William Henry Brewer was born in Indiana in 1838. He lived at home with his father until he was 25 years-old (1862) when he married Mary Ann Proctor. In 1869, he and his wife went west to Tarkio, Iowa and tried their hand at farming.  Farming did not work out very well, and he moved to Red Oak where he sold groceries, with moderate success, for three years. In 1874, he established a photography rail car in Shenandoah and intended to do business there as well as in neighboring communities that he visited along the rail. Business was excellent in Shenandoah, so attaching his studio to a train was not necessary. He then opened a modern photography studio store front which grew over time.  Brewer’s business made him one of the more financially successful citizens of Shenandoah. SOLD

William Hitchcock was a farmer. This portrait was published by A. V. Brown, whose studio was located at 380 Main Street, in Springfield, Massachusetts. SOLD
