In 1875, Blatz developed a bottling department that allowed him to ship his beer nationally. Blatz sold his company to a British syndicate (United States Brewing Company” in 1891. He continued to lead the company until his death in 1894. He was succeeded by his son. The company was sold a couple of times before it was purchased by Pabst in 1958. The reason for the production of so many postcards featuring Miss Robinne is that she was very popular during her era. Certainly, one of the reasons for her popularity, was her great beauty. Robinne was born in France and was a student at the Paris Conservatory. In 1904 she joined the company of Sarah Bernhardt and later joined the Theatre Michel in St. Petersburg, Russia. The IMDb reports that she appeared in nearly fifty films between 1906 and 1973.She was known for “Conquered Hate” (1913,) “Struggle for Life” (1914), and “La reine de Saba” (1913). Robinne was married to actor Rene Alexandre from 1912 until she was widowed in 1946. A FEI CARRIER : TAHITI : LOIN CLOTH : ETHNOGRAPHIC : PHOTO BY G. SPITZ

This Tahitian vintage postcard features a “Fei Carrier”. What is a fe’i, you may ask? Fe’i are the most popular variety of bananas in French Polynesia. One would imagine the weight of the banana laden pole must be quite heavy. However, the carrier, clad in a loincloth, appears up to the task. This photo was taken by Charles Georges Spitz (1857-1894). I found little information about Spitz except that he was a former sergeant in the Marine infantry and he landed on the island of Tahiti in 1878 on the ship “Le Navarin”. In short time he received his military discharge and he settled in Papeete as a “jeweler-photographer”. His talent as a photographer is well recognized and his photographs are quite valuable. SOLD
