TWO HANDSOME YOUNG MEN WEARING CAPS

This vintage real photo postcard features two handsome young men wearing caps. They are sporting a “dressy casual” look as seen by their open at the top shirts and their collars draping over the lapels of their sport jackets. Writing on the reverse of the photograph reveals that one of the boy’s names is Andre. Unfortunately I am unable to decipher the handwriting to uncover his last name. The writing also appears to include the year that the photograph was taken,  “1942-1943”. This postcard falls in the rare category, it comes from a private studio and had very limited production.   SOLD

DAPPER & HANDSOME : SAMUEL E. LEIBOWITZ : PLAID SUIT & BOWLER HAT : JEWISH AMERICAN HISTORY

This vintage real photo postcard features a handsome young man named Samuel E. Leibowitz. He is certainly a dandy. Note his bowler hat, wide shirt collar, and his plaid suit. Samuel must have been happy about his appearance in this photograph. He was proud enough to send it to his friend, Louis Schwartz. This postcard brings up a lot of questions. What was Samuel Leibowitz’s story? Who was he and where was he ? What was his relationship to Louis Schwartz? Were Leibowitz and Schwartz recent immigrants to the United States? This postcard offers a glimpse into (presumably) Jewish American history. The Velox stamp box on the reverse of this photo postcard indicates that this postcard dates back to sometime between 1907 and 1914. SOLD

KARINA AND HER DOG : PREMIERE BALLET DANCER AT THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE : LONDON

Karina. She was celebrity enough to use only her first name. More modern performers who are recognized by just one name include Elvis, Madonna, and Adele. Who was Karina? As the caption on the postcard asserts, Karina was the premiere dancer at the Royal Opera House and the founder of Madame Karina’s Royal School of Dancing. The school was under the patronage of Queen Alexandra (of Denmark). The Queen was a staunch supporter of the opera ballet from 1913 through the 1920’s.  Karina was Danish and active in the 1910’s and 1920’s. Two portraits of Karina can be found in Great Britain’s National Portrait Gallery. The photograph seen on this postcard was taken by the esteemed studio of Elliott & Fry. This Victorian photographic studio and photographic film manufacturer was founded in 1863 by Joseph John Elliott and Clarence Edmund Fry. For an entire century the studio took and published images of leading Victorian luminaries from the fields of science, public service, art, politics, as well as celebrities of the day. SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A SOMBER OLD COUPLE : CIVIL WAR VETERAN : 13TH IOWA INFANTRY

This photograph features an interesting looking older couple. The husband stands in the background with a sullen expression while the wife, appearing quite intense, stands in the forefront. One wonders if the positioning in this image reflects their respective roles in their relationship. Written notations on the reverse of this photograph reveals that the subjects in the image are “Barclay and Sarah George”. The photo is dated “1900”. No photographer or location is indicated but research quickly discovered that this couple resided in Tonganoxie, Kansas at the time this photograph was produced. The 1900 Federal census revealed that Barclay  was born in Indiana in 1839, making him 60 years old at the time of this photograph. He had one parent that was born in Virginia while the other hailed from North Carolina. Sarah George was born in 1846 in Indiana, making her 53 years old when this picture was taken. Her parents were native to North Carolina. The couple was married in 1863. The 1895 and Kansas census reported that the pair still lived in Tonganoxie on their farm and had two teenage children. The 1905 Kansas census also found them residing in Tonganoxie. Further research revealed that Barclay was a participant in the War Between the States. He served in the 13th Iowa Infantry (Company B). Sarah filed for Barclay’s civil war pension in 1898 stating that he had become an “invalid”. In 1923 she filed for his pension upon his death. She made the death claim while living in Texas. Barclay George (1839-1923) is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Pampa, Texas. An interesting side note concerns the origin of the name of “Tonganoxie”. “Tonganoxie” was the name of the chief of the Delaware tribe that occupied the area. The town was established in 1866. This vintage photo measures about 6 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ and is in very good condition (see scans).

PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN : LOTS OF LACE : KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE : PHOTO BY J. KNAFFL

This vintage photograph features a portrait of a pretty young woman. She is wearing a high collared dress with a great deal of detailed lace. The woman was photographed by the Knaffl & Brother studio, located in Knoxville, Tennessee. She is well posed and the photographer did an excellent job producing this portrait. The high quality of this photograph should come as no surprise.  Joseph Knaffl (1861-1938) was an esteemed American art and portrait photographer. He was active in Knoxville during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One of his portraits is very well known. It has been printed thousands of times and, according to Wikepedia, it is stilll utilized in Hallmark Christmas cards. The 1899 portrait is known as the “Knaffl Madonna”. Knaffl’s early portraits were influenced by classical art and often had a religious theme. After joining with his protege, James Brakebill, he transitioned into more character studies. In the mid 1880’s he did a series of photographs mocking negative racial stereotypes. Many of Knaffl’s portraits appeared in national magazines. His images also won many awards at National competitions. Knaffl owned two studios in Knoxville. Knaffl and Brother was established in 1884, while Knaffl and Brakebill began operations in 1909. He operated them simultaneously. Knaffl was born in Tennessee. His father was an Austrian born physician who was the court physician to the emperor of Austria. After 1848 he moved to the United States and upon the advent of the civil war, he became a Union Army Surgeon. Joseph Knaffl was schooled in Knoxville and Nashville. He learned photography from his brother-in-law (T M Scheier). The 4 1/8″ x 6″ image has excellent clarity. It is in excellent (near mint) condition (see scans).
