SEATED YOUNG WOMAN WITH AN OPEN BOOK : BIBLE : CABINET CARD (1886)

This cabinet card portrait features a seated young woman holding a book with many pages. It is likely that the book is a bible. The woman appears to be in her teenage years. She is dressed well but not overly fancy. Note her lace collar and the multiple buttons on the front of her dress. This photograph is from the Chillman studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Phillip E. Chillman’s obituary appears in the Bulletin of Photography (1915). Chillman died in 1915 at the age of 73. He was a pioneer of photography in Philadelphia. He opened his studio on Arch Street in the early 1860’s. He held many photography patents. During his 15 year retirement he took up and excelled at water coloring. His work was exhibited at Pennsylvania, New York City, and Boston exhibitions. An inscription on the reverse of this photograph indicates that it was taken in 1886.  SOLD

CONCHITA MONTENEGRO : SPANISH MODEL, DANCER, AND STAGE AND SCREEN ACTRESS

This vintage real photo postcard features Spanish model, dancer, and stage and screen actress, Conchita Montenegro (1911-2007). Montenegro learned classical and Spanish dance as a child. She is remembered for revolutionizing Spanish Dance. She transitioned to dramatic acting and starred in a number of productions. By the time she reached 13 years of age, she was famous in Hollywood, France, and Germany. She started in Hollywood with a contract with Metro Goldwyn Mayer. She began her film career in Spanish language versions of MGM movies. She quickly moved into American movies and her fame grew. In 1931, she left MGM for Fox Films. That same year, while on the way to shoot “The Cisco Kid” in Tucson, Arizona; she and many of the film crew and actors were involved in a serious train crash (derailment). In 1931, Fox named three of it’s actresses as “Fox debutante stars” and vowed to do so annually. Montenero, Helen Mack, and Linda Watkins were in the first trio that Fox honored as most likely to achieve stardom. Fox was competing with “WAMPAS Baby Stars” in forming this group of future stars. At times, Montenegro would perform at premiers of new films. She was able to showcase her multi talents, including vaudeville acts, at these shows. The IMDb credits Montenegro with 39 film appearances between 1927 and 1944. She played Lola Montes in the 1944 biopic. This vintage postcard was published by Ross Verlag as part of a series (No.5932/1). Note the logo for Metro Goldwyn Mayer in the bottom right hand corner of the image. Since Montenegro worked for MGM around 1930, she must have been around 19 years old when this photograph was taken. This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

DAPPER YOUNG MAN HOLDING A WAND IN WORCESTER, ENGLAND (CARTE DE VISITE))

This carte de visite features a dapper young man wearing a corsage, derby hat, and a bit of a bewildered expression. Take note of his wand. I call it a wand for lack of a better description. One thinks of wands as being related to magic. However, not all wands are associated with magic. In fact, wands also are symbolic objects of power. The photographer of this cdv image is George Evans who operated a studio in Worcester, England. This cdv is in excellent condition (see scans).

I’M YOUR CAPTAIN, I’M YOUR CAPTAIN, NAVAL OFFICER IN PORTSMOUTH, GREAT BRITAIN

A naval captain sits for his portrait at the studio of W. V. Amey in Portsmouth, Great Britain. I am uncertain about his rank. Perhaps a visitor to this page can provide helpful information to determine his rank and country of origin. Portsmouth was a significant naval port for centuries, including at the time of this photograph. The photographer advertises that his studio was patronized by the late Majesty Queen Victoria which confirms that the photograph was taken after 1901; the year of her death. This portrait cabinet card is in good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A LOVELY YOUNG WOMAN : FERDINAND FLODIN : STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of a lovely young woman. She is beautifully dressed and holding a parasol. This postcard photograph was taken by Ferdinand Flodin (1863-1935). He was a Swedish photographer who operated a studio in Stockholm. He was well known for his portrait work, especially of theatrical performers. He was educated in the United States from 1883 to 1887. For the next two years he ran a photography gallery in Worcester, Massachusetts. He then returned to Sweden. In 1906 he became secretary of the Swedish Photogaphers Association, a post he held nine years. This postcard was published by Axel Eliasson’s Art Publishers. The publishing house was founded in 1890 and the Stockholm company was the leading producer of postcards in Sweden for many years. This postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF MRS HORACE NEVILL: ENGLISH STAGE ACTRESS

This cabinet card photograph features Mrs Horace Nevill, British stage star. She also performed under the name of  Annie Rose. She made her debut in the Gaiety theater in 1879. Her first major success was at the Royalty Theater in the production of  “The Merry Duchess” (1883). Some of the plays she appeared in include “The Lady of Lyons” (1888) with Mr. Forbes Robertson, “The School for Scandal (1889), and “Dick Venables” (1890). The reverse of the cabinet card indicates that the Photographer of this image, the London Stereoscopic Company served as “Photographers to the Royal Family”. This honor appears to have been given out rather freely as I have encountered many studios advertising that they were “photographers to the Queen” or “photographers to the Royal family”.  The reverse of this image did have a rather unique bit of advertising. The studio advertised that they offered free lessons and special studios and dark rooms reserved for the use of amateurs. This portrait cabinet card is in good condition (see scans).
