PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY WOMAN : SHENANDOAH, IOWA : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card features a portrait of a pretty and fashionable young woman. This fashionista is wearing a dark dress with lace, earrings, collar pin, rings, and flowers in her hair and pinned to her lapel. Note her pocket watch. This cabinet card photograph was taken at the W. H. Brewer studio. The studio was located in Shenandoah, Iowa. William Henry Brewer was born in Indiana in 1838. He lived at home with his father until he was 25 years-old (1862) when he married Mary Ann Proctor. In 1869, he and his wife went west to Tarkio, Iowa and tried their hand at farming.  Farming did not work out very well, and he moved to Red Oak where he sold groceries, with moderate success, for three years. In 1874, he established a photography rail car in Shenandoah and intended to do business there as well as in neighboring communities that he visited along the rail. Business was excellent in Shenandoah, so attaching his studio to a train was not necessary. He then opened a modern photography studio store front which grew over time.  Brewer’s business made him one of the more financially successful citizens of Shenandoah. SOLD

FOUR AMERICAN TRACK STARS : OLYMPIC GAMES 1924 : TWO MEDALS : NOYER : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features four American track stars at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, France. Pictured are Jackson Scholz, Charles Paddock, Emerson Carlysle Norton, and George Hill.  Jackson Scholz (1897-1986) was a sprinter. He was the first person to appear in sprint finals in three different Olympic games. He won two gold medals including one in 1924 (200m). He was depicted by actor Brad Davis in the movie “Chariots of Fire” (1981). After his retirement from track, he became a successful writer. Charles Paddock (1900-1943) fought in World War I and then ran track at USC. In the 1920 Olympics, he won a gold medal (100 m) and a silver medal (200 m). In 1924, he once again won a silver medal (200 m). Like Scholz, Paddock was also portrayed in “Chariots of Fire”. Paddock competed in the 1928 Olympics, but won no medals. After the Olympics, Paddock had management positions in Newspaper publishing. In 1926, he appeared in a silent film, “The Campus Flirt” with pretty Paramount starlet, Bebe Daniels. During World War II, Paddock died in an Alaskan plane crash with Major General William Upshur. Paddock, who was a Captain, served on the General’s staff. Paddock was inducted into track’s hall of fame in 1976. Emerson Carlysle Norton (1900-1986) competed in the decathalon. In the 1924 Olympics, he won the silver medal in that event. George Hill (1901-1992) was a sprinter and he competed in the 200 m and finished fourth. A year later, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an economics degree. A LADY AND HER VIOLIN IN ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA (PORTRAIT BY THE ARTIST ARLINGTON NELSON LINDENMUTH)

A woman poses for her portrait at the Lindenmuth Studio in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She likely viewed her self as foremost, a musician. She chose to pose herself, or approved the photographers instructions, to pose sitting and holding her violin and bow. The photographer, Arlington Nelson Lindenmuth (1856-1950) is a noted American landscape and portrait painter. He worked in Allentown which is located in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Baum Circle which was a group of artists who were influenced by the work of Pennsylvania impressionist painter Walter Emerson Baum. Lindenmuth studied painting under Peter Alfred Gross and also in Europe. His paintings were exhibited in Philadelphia and New York City. He also painted a number of murals which still can be seen in a number of Allentown’s buildings. Lindenmuth is also known as one of the pioneer photographers in the Lehigh Valley. He operated a photography studio in Allentown for a number of decades. Interestingly, in addition to running a photography business, Lindenmuth taught art from his photography studio. In 1882 he worked for the Eastman Kodak Company as a traveling salesman. He was a great advocate of art appreciation. He was a proponent for the Allentown Art Museum. One of his sons, Raphael Tod Lindenmuth, had much success as an artist. Below is an example of a painting by Arlington Nelson Lindenmuth. ROSE HITCHCOCK: PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN IN SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS

The pretty woman in this cabinet card photograph is identified on the reverse of the card as Rose Hitchcock. The inscription adds that she is the daughter of Mette Clara Felton Hitchcock. Rose Hitchcock (1873-?) lived in Brimfield, Massachusetts, according to the 1880 census. Rose was the sister of George (1868-?) and Dora (1870-?), and the daughter of William Hitchcock (1812-?). William Hitchcock was a farmer. This portrait was published by A. V. Brown, whose studio was located at 380 Main Street, in Springfield, Massachusetts. SOLD

This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty teenage girl with lovely curls. Note her lovely prominent eyes. She is wearing a nice color tinted hat. This postcard was published by Rotophot as part of a series (No.5.1212/8). This card has a German stamp that was postmarked in 1907. The postcard is in good condition (see scans).

Postcard 1 features lovely edwardian stage performer, Fabienne Darlay. Her photograph was expertly taken by the celebrated French photographer, Paul Boyer (1861-1908). He was based in Paris, and photographed many celebrities during his career. This postcard was published by Societe Industrielle de Photograpie (SIP) of Rueil, France, and was part of a series (no.1441). The image was hand tinted. This postcard dates back to circa 1904-1908. Note there is minor cornerwear and a light crease in the upper left hand corner of the card. (SOLD)

MAY FRIS : PRETTY DANCER : MEMBER OF THE TILLER GIRLS DANCE TROUPE : RPPC

This lovely vintage real photo postcard features dancer and postcard model, May Fris. Fris was a member of the very popular Tiller Girl woman’s dance troupe. The group began in London in the 1890’s and kept growing until there were dozens of Tiller Girl troupes spread around the world. Variety Magazine described the Tiller Troupe of Girls as very American, even though they were English; and that they were “good to look upon, well dressed and a good show”.  This postcard was published by Georg Gerlach & Co. as part of a series (306/2). The firm was a real photo card publisher and printer based in Berlin, Germany. A LADY DRUMMER IN UNIFORM : HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA : RARE : CABINET CARD

This rare cabinet card portrait features a woman drummer wearing a military type uniform. Since women were prohibited to serve in the military during this era, she is likely a member of a community band or a stage actress posing in her costume. The female musician appears to be very serious as she beats on the drum. C. S. Roshon is the photographer who took this photograph. The Roshon Gallery was located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He also operated a studio in Lebanon, Pennsylvania and Morristown, New Jersey. Roshon was an excellent photographer and produced a number of unique images.  SOLD

THE POLKA DOT LADY : BELLEFONTE, PENNSYLVANIA : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card image features a shapely woman in a polka dot dress with a black jacket and apron. Although the shape of the dots are more like a leaf or star, than a dot, the dress has a polka dot appearance. The fashion statement made by this woman is reminiscent of the latter day song about the girl in the “itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini”. The woman in this photograph, judging by her outfit, clearly is not adverse to attracting attention. The photograph was produced by an unidentified studio in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. Interestingly, Bellefonte proclaims itself to be “Central Pennsylavnia’s Victorian Secret”. According to various sources, the town has many  lovely Victorian homes. Bellefonte is located about twelve miles from State College, the home of Penn State.  SOLD
