TWO HAPPY CHILDREN AND THEIR TOYS IN BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

This vintage real photo postcard makes me smile. The card pictures two happy children posing for their portrait while holding some fun toys. These kids are ready to play. The younger child is holding a hoop toy while the older child has a ball and racquet. This photograph was taken by a photographer that may be familiar to regular Cabinet Card Gallery visitors. The gallery has a number of photos from the studio of Florencio Bixio. This talented photographer operated a studio in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Bixio specialized in studio portraits, wedding portraits, and photos of entertainers. He also was a correspondent for the magazine “Caras and Caretas”, as well as a producer of photo postcards. Between 1900 and 1930 he opened photography studios in partnership with two other photographers. These studios were called “Bixio and Merlino” and Bixio and Castiglioni”. He was of Italian descent and emigrated to Argentina in 1896. He died in Buenos Aires in 1933. This real photo postcard has excellent clarity and is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A FATHER, TWO YOUNG SONS, AND A HOOP TOY IN DUSSELDORF, GERMANY

This cabinet card captures a well dressed father and his two sons posing for their portrait at the Elite studio in Dusseldorf, Germany. The father is wearing a three piece suit with a tie and a pocket watch. The older child is holding a hoop toy. Both boys are wearing naval caps with lettering spelling out “Kaiserliche Marine”. The “Kaiserliche Marine” was the name of the German Empire’s Navy. It existed between 1871 and 1919. Kaiser Wilhelm II expanded and improved the navy, as well as, broadened it’s mission. The German navy became a very powerful force, second only to Britain’s Royal Navy. This fantastic family portrait has excellent clarity and is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF AN ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL AND HER HOOP TOY IN VIENNA, AUSTRIA

hoop 2

This vintage photograph features an adorable little girl sitting on a wall and holding her hoop toy. She is wearing a cute dress and is wearing a bow in her long wavy hair. She is also wearing a wonderful smile. The photographer of this image is Marie Gleissner who operated a studio in Vienna, Austria. I was unable to find biographical information about the photographer. It is my assumption that the photographer is a woman (Marie). The photographer did an excellent job posing the little girl and produced a terrific image.

PARENTS AND THEIR THREE SONS AND A HOOP TOY IN NEU-WEISSENSEE, GERMANY (CARTE DE VISITE)

hoop

This family portrait carte de visite includes a set of parents and their three young sons. Each member of this clan appears very serious as they pose for this image. The family is wearing their fine clothing for their photograph which was taken by Max Schmidt of Neu-Weissensee, Germany. Mom is holding a book, most likely a bible. Each boy is wearing a hat and holding a toy. One boy is holding a horn, the second child has a ball toy, and and the third boy is holding a trundling hoop. Hoop rolling or hoop trundling is a child’s game which has been documented as far back as Ancient Greece. In the game, the hoop is rolled along the ground, usually by an object held by the player. The player tries to keep the hoop upright for an extended period of time or performs tricks with the hoop.

boyandring_0002This Cabinet Card is a portrait of a young boy and his hoop toy. He is also holding a stick which may be used in conjunction with the hoop. Note his fancy clothing and nice boots. His corn hat is on the ground next to him. The photographer and location of the photographers studio is unknown. Penciled on the reverse of the card are some identification information but not enough to be useful. The subjects name is Earle and he is the son of Lillian and the grand-nephew of Permalia  S. Brittell.
