PORTRAIT OF A FORLORN CARPATHIAN MAN IN THE UKRAINE

carpathian 1             This vintage real photo postcard features a Carpathian man seated on a fence, somewhere in the UKRAINE. The gentleman appears contemplative and forlorn.  He has a most captivating  face. My impression is that he has seen a lot of hardship in his lifetime. The Carpathian region is a historic area in the border between Central and Eastern Europe. Most of the region is located in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia Oblast. Smaller parts of the Carpathian territory are in Poland and Slovakia. Before World War I most of this region was part of Hungary. After the war it became part of Czechoslovakia. The people of the Carpathian area are ethnically diverse. They are primarily Ukraninian, Rusyn, Lemko, Hungarian, Slovak, Romanian, Bulgarian, and Russian. This vintage real photo postcard is in excellent condition (see scans).

BABES ON A BIKE : TWO VERY YOUNG KIDS SITTING ON A LARGE MOTORCYCLE IN THE UKRAINE

This vintage photograph captures two very young children siting on a large motorcycle. The kids are adorable and the image is quite unique. Don’t you love the expressions on the children’s faces. This photograph originates from the Ukraine. My estimate is that the photo was taken in the early 1960’s. The photograph measures 5″ x 7″ and is in good condition (see scans). Note the small tear in the upper right hand corner of the image as well as the crease in the bottom left hand corner.

YOUNG UKRAINIAN MAN WEARING A LEATHER JACKET AND CAP

 

This cabinet card image is highly unusual. I have seen few photographs from this era where the sitter is wearing a leather jacket. This young man is wearing a leather jacket and a cap. The way he is dressed suggests that he may have been a member of the military or the police. However, he is wearing no insignias or badges. The previous owner of this photograph reported that the image was purchased in the Ukraine. The cabinet card is of Russian origin but I can not confirm it is Ukrainian. If one looks at the reverse of the cabinet card inside the egg shaped oval design, one can see the word “Mockba”. This Russian word means Moscow and it is my hypothesis that the mount was produced there.

THREE INTRIGUING LOOKING MEN IN LWOW, POLAND

The three men posing for this portrait have an intriguing appearance. Who are these guys? What do they do for a living? They look like “tough guys”. The men are well dressed and are wearing terrific hats with brims folded in strategic places. All three men have neat mustaches and the fellow on the left is wearing wire rim glasses. The photo studio was named Kordyan and the studio was located in Lwow, Poland. In 1945, Lwow became part of the Ukraine and was called Lvov. In 1991, after Ukraine’s independence, the city was renamed Lviv. Research reveals that the studio Kordyan was opened on the 5th floor in a building now housing the “Old City Hostel”. The gallery existed in the building until 1914 and was owned by Bethold Feyershtayn. The address is currently known as 3 Klinskoho Street.

JEWISH COUPLE, REPORTEDLY BRODER SINGERS (YIDDISH) IN BRODY, UKRAINE

This Cabinet card featuring a well dressed couple, offers a bit of mystery. The last owner of this card states that this couple are “Brody Yiddish Singers”. So what does that mean? First of all, Brody is a city in Lviv Oblast (province) of western Ukraine. The city was a crossroads and jewish trade center in the 19th century. Brody is considered to be Shtetls,  Brodersanger, Purim, Jewish theater, CzarAlexander III, Berl Margulis, Berl Broder, one of the “shtetls”. The city was famous for the Brodersanger or Broder singers who were among the first Jews to publicly perform Yiddish songs outside of Purim (a holiday) and wedding celebrations. These performers were the precursors of jewish theater. Due to anti Jewish regulation enacted in 1882 by Czar Alexander III of Russia and the resulting exodus of Russian Jews; throughout 1881 hundreds of Jewish immigrants arrived in Brody daily. The most famous Broder singer was Berl Margulis also known as Berl Broder (1815  -1868). It is not certain that this cabinet card really depicts Broder singers and no evidence is available to support the claim , but it is not unusual for families to pass down such information over generations and  there is a reasonable chance that the history is correct and the story is worth telling. The photographer of this cabinet card is Buscdorf.
