This carte de visite photographic portrait features a well dressed gentleman with a handsome mustache and beard. The photographer of this image is H L Bixby. His studio was located in Chelsea, Vermont. Hira Lewis Bixby (1833-1903) worked as a photographer in Chesea during the 1870”s. A stereograph photographed by Bixby is in the collection of California’s Getty Museum. SOLD

This carte de visite photograph features a handsome man with a full wirey beard. He has piercing eyes. Writing on the reverse of the cdv identifies the gentleman as “Timothy Borden (Barden?). The photographer of this photograph is Charles Bohm of Denver, Colorado. His studio was located at 284 Fifteenth Street. He is cited in a number of sources as the former employer of Frank Albert Rinehart (1861-1928) who became a famous American artist for his photography capturing Native American personalities and scenes. To view the work of Alfred Edward Rinehart, Frank’s brother, click on the category “Photographer: Rinehart”. Charles Bohm was an engraver, a jeweler and a real estate developer. He was born in Germany in 1846 and his family came to the United States to escape the democratic revolution of 1848. For many years the Bohm family lived in New Jersey where he became an apprentice in a design and engraving business. After a two year trip to Denver, he returned to New York where he designed copper plates, illustrated magazines, and organized the Palette Art Club. In 1872 he moved back to Denver and established a business offering design, engraving and photographic portraiture. He was active in Denver society and was a trustee for the water company and the library. Apparently, he loved speed and was involved in racing cars, horses and sleds. SOLD
PORTRAIT OF REVEREND ALBERT TYLER (1823-1913): PUBLISHER AND HISTORIAN IN WEBSTER, MASSACHUSETTS
This cabinet card is a portrait of Reverend Albert Tyler (1823-1913) who was a publisher and historian in Worcester, Massachusetts. Tyler was a Universalist minister. Tyler’s portrait was done by the studio of Davis & Woodward, located in Webster, Massachusetts. Tyler’s name, date of birth, and date of death are listed in an inscription on the reverse of the photograph. This image was taken in his later years and he has a long gray beard that becomes very wispy at its bottom. In the book, “History of Worcester Massachusetts” , by Lincoln and Hersey (1862), Tyler is said to have been born in Smithfield, Rhode Island. The publication states that Tyler was ordained in 1851 from the Union Association of Universalists in Warren, Massachusetts. He then became pastor of churches in Oxford, Ma. (2 years), Granby, Connecticut (6 years), and Quincy, Ma.. Next he moved to Worcester and entered the printing business. The Webster Times (1889) supplies an interesting story about Reverend Tyler. He was in attendance of the 28th reunion of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Company E) when he displayed some unusual behavior. Tyler “created a sensation” among the 25 veterans in attendance “by rising and saying he received a “spiritual communication” from Lieutenant Nelson Bartholomew who had died during the war. The message that Tyler received stated that the Lieutenant’s spirit was attending the meeting and found it “most enjoyable to him” and that he loved his comrades, just as he had in 1861. GENTLEMAN WITH A NOTABLE BEARD IN PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA (RARE FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHER)
Regular visitors to the Cabinet Card Gallery know that this writer has a bit of an obsession with photographs of interesting beards and mustaches. The fellow posing for this cabinet card earns a spot in the “Beards (Only the Best) category. You can view the beard collection by clicking on the aforementioned category. A. M. Gorman of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, produced this image of an interesting looking gentleman. Research yielded some surprising information about the photographer. A. M. Gorman is a female photographer whose full name was Annie M. Gorman. She was listed as a photographer in the 1881 Philadelphia city directory. She also appears in the 1880 US census which lists her occupation as photographer. At the time of the census she was 36 years old and single. Preliminary research yielded very little information about Miss Gorman. A story is waiting to be written about this pioneering female photographer. I wonder how many of her photographs still survive. INTERESTING COUPLE IN MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN
A young to middle aged couple pose for their portrait at Miller Brothers studio in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The studio was located on the corner of 3rd and Chestnut Streets. They pose in a studio setting that screams “rustic”. The wood fence, shabby chair, and country backdrop help create the rural feel. The man in this photograph is wearing an interesting beard (see the category “Beards (Only the Best)”. He is holding a book in his left hand and coupled with his attire, the image creates an impression that he is an educated man. The woman is wearing a very plain dress and a serious expression. SOLD
STONED FACE GENTLEMAN IN WAUSAU, OR MERRILL, WISCONSIN
This cabinet card portrait features a well dressed older man with a well groomed beard. Although his beard is full; it is not attached to sideburns. The gentleman appears tired and he exhibits no hint of a smile. The photographer of this photograph is Edgar G. Fleming. At the time that this photo was taken, Fleming had studios in both Wausau and Merrill, Wisconsin. According to a couple of Badger state directories, he was active in Wausau between 1884 and 1886 and active in Merrill between 1891 and 1895. These dates are not completely accurate because they do not show any overlap in years which would allow him to operate the two studios at the same time. Fleming also had a studio in Columbus, Wisconsin (1895-1896). SOLD
A FAMILY BOND: GRANDFATHER AND GRANDDAUGHTER POSE FOR A PORTRAIT
This cabinet card captures the bond between grandfather and granddaughter. Grandfather looks rather serious as he stares at the photographer. He has an interesting wide beard. His right hand grips his chair as if he is sitting in the dentist’s chair waiting for a tooth extraction. The granddaughter has bright eyes and appears to be holding back a smile. She has her right hand gently and affectionately resting on her grandfather’s arm. The photographer and the locale of the studio are not identified. This touching cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

A MAN AND HIS BEARD IN MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE
This cabinet card features a well dressed gentleman with neatly combed hair and a wiry gray beard. The photographer of the image is W. R. Call and his studio was located in Manchester, New Hampshire. Whiting Rexford Call (1839- ?) finished public school and became in succession, a school teacher, grocery clerk, and photographer. He opened his photography studio in 1867 and it was still operating forty years later. The 1882 Manchester Directory listed the studio’s address as 895 Elm Street. MAN WITH THE THICKEST BEARD IN READING, PENNSYLVANIA
Photographer J. S. Fritz photographed this portrait of a man with a beard. This beard is no ordinary beard. This beard is extraordinarily thick. His mustache is also not ordinary. This mustache is extraordinarily long. The photographer of this cabinet card hotograph is John S. Fritz. He was born on his father’s Pennsylvania farm in 1861. He left home at 15 to work in Philadelphia and while there, learned photography. He then worked with his brother in law as a traveling photographer. He left the business to pursue other occupations and he worked in both Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. He returned to photography and at some point operated a photography studio located at 852 Penn Street in Reading. He was married to Elizabeth Apffel and had at least three children. SOLD
