A CUTE LITTLE GIRL AND HER BIG DOLL IN UTICA, NEW YORK

A precious baby girl, sitting on a chair, poses next to her large doll. The cute little girl has the most darling expression as she looks at the camera. She is wearing a necklace and a hair band. This cabinet card photograph was taken at the Scofield studio in Utica, New York. Charles H. Scofield (1845-1918) was active as a photographer in Utica between 1874 and 1879. A stereoview portrait by Scofield is part of the collection at the J. Paul Getty Museum, in Los Angeles, California. Scofield held a photography patent for an “adjustable camera and box”, according to the Anthony Photographic Bulletin (1886). The 1880 US census reveals that he was married to Fanny Scofield. A photographer named Charles Albert Scofield operated in Utica. He is listed in the 1894 Utica business directory, as well as, other editions. He was the son of Charles H. Scofield. This cabinet card photograph is in good condition. Note that there is slight fading, as well as some spots in the lower portion of the image (see scans).

THE MOST LOVING AND PROTECTIVE SISTER IN MOUNT PLEASANT, PENNSYLVANIA

This is a particularly nice cabinet card photograph for a couple of reasons. First, the photographer has captured the loving and protective emotions of the older sister toward her baby sister. Second, the photographer did an excellent job of photographing the children (dressed in white) against a dark background. The intimacy that the older child feels for the younger, is obvious in this image. Big sister has one arm wrapped around her sibling’s shoulder. She is also holding the baby’s hand. The photographer of this cabinet card portrait is Oliver C. Kough. He operated a studio in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania. Oliver was born in Pennsylvania in 1873. He attended public school until he was twelve years old, whereupon he joined his father working in the mines. He received a number of promotions during the several years he worked the mines. In 1893, he decided that he wanted a different job and he went to Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and received training and worked in a photo studio. At some point in his time at Uniontown, he partnered with a photographer with the last name of Leeper. Kaugh then opened his gallery in Mount Pleasant and operated the business until 1901. His next job move was to return to Uniontown where he took over the studio of McClellan Leonard. Kough was a member of the National, State, and County photographer associations. He was married to Ella Kaugh (1897). The Bulletin of Photography (1912) reveals that Kough had a tragic accident “when attempting to make a flashlight” of a fraternal group at their lodge. As he was about to set off the powder, there was a blinding flash in his face which resulted in him losing his sight in both eyes. How could such a devastating accident happen? Apparently, Kough was using flash powder, a mixture of magnesium powder and potassium chlorate. This technique was introduced by German inventors in 1887. A measured amount of powder would be placed in a pan and ignited by hand, resulting in a brief brilliant flash of light. This explosive event produced both smoke and noise. This method of producing a flash could be life threatening, especially if the powder was damp. This photo is in very good condition (see scans).   (SOLD)

AN ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL AND THE CAT IN THE HAT

This vintage real photo postcard offers a fun portrait of a very adorable little girl and her cat. The cat is not an ordinary cat. It is the cat in the hat; and the cat is also wearing a dress, or coat. The little girl seems to be very happy while her poor cat seems to be very unhappy about wearing human clothing. The child must be a futurist. Somehow she knew that a day would arrive, many decades after her time, that people would buy wardrobes for their pets. This postcard was published by the Rapid Photo Company. The company existed between 1901 and 1910. It was located in London, England. The company is best known for their portraits of actresses. The postcard is part of a series (Series 191, no. 3589).  (SOLD)

AFRICAN AMERICAN LITTLE GIRL WITH A BIG NAME: MARGARET ALICE VERA VANCE

This vintage real photo postcard features an adorable African American little girl sitting in a tree. The little girl’s mother wrote a touching message on the reverse of the postcard. “Her name is Margaret Alice Vera Vance. I can’t tell you how much I love my baby “Mgrt” but I can assure you that she doesn’t go hungry or cold.”  This postcard was never mailed and is in very good condition. The “AZO” stamp box indicates that the postcard was produced between 1904 and 1918.

PORTRAIT OF YOUNG AND ADORABLE SIBLING SAILORS IN MONROE, MICHIGAN

The two boys featured in this vintage photograph are absolutely adorable. They appear to be siblings, perhaps even twins. The boys are wearing sailor outfits. Note the insignia on the sleeve of one of the boys. This photo was taken at the Beck  studio in Monroe, Michigan. Let me introduce you to cousin Betty Hudson. She is a cutie pie. This vintage real photo postcard of Betty was taken by a studio in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The photographer used lighting in creating this photo that is reminiscent of the work of artist Coles Phillips. An inscription on the reverse of the postcard indicates that this photograph was taken in 1917. This photo postcard is in good condition (see scans).

TRIO OF CUTIES : THREE LITTLE GIRLS POSING ON THE STEPS OF A MUSEUM

The three little girls featured on the vintage real photo postcard are absolutely adorable. I wonder if they are siblings. If so, the youngest two girls are twins. Two of the girls are wearing necklaces and the oldest child is wearing a bracelet. Note the doll clutched by the cutie on the bottom step. Be a voyeur for a moment and look inside the large window behind the girls. You will see a large statue, which may indicate that the girls are standing on the steps of a museum. An alternative hypothesis is that the children are standing in front of a wealthy person’s mansion. An inscription on the reverse of the postcard reveals that this photo was taken in 1928. This postcard is unique. The photo was taken by a private photographer. It was not issued by a postcard company as there are no logos or credits on the card. This vintage photo postcard is in very good condition (see scans).

ADORABLE AND FASHIONABLE LITTLE BOY AND HIS BIG TOY HORSE IN TRURO, ENGLAND

This cabinet card portrait features a little boy holding the reigns of his toy horse in one hand and a whip in the other hand. The child is adorably dressed from head to toe. The toy horse beside him is nearly as tall as he is, and is very realistic looking. The horse even has a mane with real hair. E. I. Ellery is the photographer of this lovely image. His studio was located in the city of Truro which is located in Cornwall, England. On the reverse of the photograph is a very elaborate logo advertising Mr. Ellery’s services. An inscription on the reverse identifies the child as being “Percy Rogers” at two years and two months of age.  (SOLD)
