PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY LITTLE GIRL IN OAKLAND, MARYLAND

A pretty little girl stands on a wicker chair while posing for her portrait at the Pritchard studio in Oakland, Maryland. The child is displaying a serious expression. Her curly hair on each side of her head is held in place by ribbons. She has a sash running across her midriff. I believe that it may signify that she is in mourning although that is just a hypothesis. An inscription on the reverse of the cabinet card identifies the girl as “Cousin Alice Salter”. Her name is too common to find biographical information about her. The photographer of this cabinet card image is Galusha H. Pritchard. The 1880 US census identifies him as being born in 1850 and as a working photographer. In 1889 he married Ella Pettit. The 1910 US census revealed that Pritchard was still working as a photographer. TWO YOUNG HISPANIC SIBLINGS IN NATIVE CLOTHING

This vintage real photo postcard features two young siblings wearing local garb pose for their portrait at an unidentified photography studio. These children are very adorable. The older child is taking a protective position next to her younger sibling. Judging by the card on the younger child’s hat, the kids are dressed for a religious ceremony. This photograph is probably from the 1940’s. The reverse of the photograph indicates that the image was once a resident of a photo album.

ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL WEARING A BIRD BROOCH IN PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

This cabinet card introduces us to an adorable little girl. She is well dressed and wearing lots of jewelry. Her jewelry includes a brooch shaped like a bird that is carrying a letter in it’s beak (see photo below). She is also wearing earrings, bracelets, and a pendant on a chain. The studio photo was taken by the MacIntire studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. James A. MacIntire is listed in the 1903 and 1904 business directory as a photographer.

THE HAPPIEST BOY IN PORTLAND, MAINE

The little boy featured in this carte de visite may be the happiest child in Portland, Maine. He has the most wonderful smile and even his eyes sparkle with joy. He is wearing a sailor suit, which was a popular style during the cdv and cabinet card era. This photograph was taken at the J. H. Lamson gallery in Portland, Maine. The Cabinet Card Gallery has other photographs by Mr. Lamson and they can be seen by clicking on the category “Photographer: Lamson”. Joseph Harrison Lamson (1840-1901) operated a studio in Portland, Maine. His father was a maker of daguerrotypes and his mother was an artist. He began his career in photography in Bangor, Maine and then worked in Cuba, the West Indies, and South America. He made a fortune and then bought a studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then moved to Maine and and began his photographic studio in Portland. He photographed the poets Longfellow and Whittier. When he died, his two sons took over the studio.

THREE ADORABLE LITTLE GIRLS ON A ROPE LADDER

This precious postcard portrait features three adorable little girls posing on a rope ladder. The photographer of this photograph is H Traut of Munich, Germany. This postcard was mailed in Sweden in 1906.   (SOLD)

LITTLE GIRL WITH CYMBALS AND LOTS OF PERSONALITY (POSTCARD FROM ANTWERP, BELGIUM)

This vintage postcard features an adorable little girl playing the cymbals. She is wearing a flower wreath in her hair and a wonderful smile. The postcard was published by NPG (“Neue Photographische Gesellschaft”) and is part of a series (no. O 1448). The postcard has a Belgian stamp that was postmarked in 1909.  The postcard is addressed to someone living in Anvers (Antwerp), which is a Flemish city in Belgium.

TEENAGE GIRL WEARING A BLACK DRESS IN GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN

Charles F. Schroeder operated the Quincy Street Gallery in Green Bay, Wisconsin. This cabinet card comes from his studio. He photographed this teenage (?) girl. She is dressed in black and stands at an open gate,  holding her wide brimmed hat. Schroeder was born in Prussia in 1836. The 1870 and 1880 census lists him as a photographer and reveals that his wife’s name was Wilhelmena. A Wisconsin photographers list reports that Schroeder was an active photographer in Green Bay between 1870 and 1908. There is an inscription on the reverse of the cabinet card. I believe that is written in German. Perhaps a visitor to the cabinet card gallery will enlighten us by identifying the language and maybe even translating the inscription.   (SOLD)

THE MOST ADORABLE GIRL IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM: A YOUNG GIRL POSES BY A CRESCENT MOON

This is one of the most adorable real photo postcard portraits in my collection. The little girl seen in this photo has a most engaging smile. Even the crescent moon has an engaging smile. At one point in early portrait postcard history, it was not a rare occurrence to photograph someone, or a couple, sitting on, or standing next to, a crescent moon. However, I have seen few close-up crescent moon postcards such as this one. The dark background employed by the photographer is especially effective. Note the little girls colorful striped socks; they are fun and fantastic. This postcard of French origin and if I am reading one of the postmarks correctly, it was mailed in 1908.  (SOLD)

THE WORLD’S FAIR PHOTO VIEW COMPANY PHOTOGRAPHS A BABY IN A PRAM IN MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN

A cute baby looks out of her baby carriage with a look of consternation. Her safety in the pram is assured because she is wearing a safety belt. The carriage appears to be on a boardwalk although the photograph is likely taken in a studio in front of a back drop. The World’s Fair Photo View Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, took this photograph. The World’s Fair, officially titled the Milwaukee Industrial Exposition was held in Milwaukee in 1881. One of the officers of the exposition was Fredrick Pabst (1836-1904), the German-American brewer for whom the Pabst Brewing company was named. It is clear that this cabinet card photo was taken during, or shortly after 1881. This cabinet card portrait is certainly an interesting remnant of early Milwaukee, and early World’s Fair history.

TWO ADORABLE YOUNG BROTHERS AND THEIR STRAW HATS

This vintage photograph is an exceptional portrait of two young boys. The pair are probably brothers. The boys are well dressed. Note their boots, straw hats, and the older boy’s bow tie. Both boys appear quite pensive. The photo measures about 7 1/4″ x 5 1/2″. The photographer and the location of the studio are unknown.   SOLD
