TEENAGE GIRL WEARING A BLACK DRESS IN GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN

Charles F. Schroeder operated the Quincy Street Gallery in Green Bay, Wisconsin. This cabinet card comes from his studio. He photographed this teenage (?) girl. She is dressed in black and stands at an open gate,  holding her wide brimmed hat. Schroeder was born in Prussia in 1836. The 1870 and 1880 census lists him as a photographer and reveals that his wife’s name was Wilhelmena. A Wisconsin photographers list reports that Schroeder was an active photographer in Green Bay between 1870 and 1908. There is an inscription on the reverse of the cabinet card. I believe that is written in German. Perhaps a visitor to the cabinet card gallery will enlighten us by identifying the language and maybe even translating the inscription.   (SOLD)

THE MOST ADORABLE GIRL IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM: A YOUNG GIRL POSES BY A CRESCENT MOON

This is one of the most adorable real photo postcard portraits in my collection. The little girl seen in this photo has a most engaging smile. Even the crescent moon has an engaging smile. At one point in early portrait postcard history, it was not a rare occurrence to photograph someone, or a couple, sitting on, or standing next to, a crescent moon. However, I have seen few close-up crescent moon postcards such as this one. The dark background employed by the photographer is especially effective. Note the little girls colorful striped socks; they are fun and fantastic. This postcard of French origin and if I am reading one of the postmarks correctly, it was mailed in 1908.  (SOLD)

THE WORLD’S FAIR PHOTO VIEW COMPANY PHOTOGRAPHS A BABY IN A PRAM IN MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN

A cute baby looks out of her baby carriage with a look of consternation. Her safety in the pram is assured because she is wearing a safety belt. The carriage appears to be on a boardwalk although the photograph is likely taken in a studio in front of a back drop. The World’s Fair Photo View Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, took this photograph. The World’s Fair, officially titled the Milwaukee Industrial Exposition was held in Milwaukee in 1881. One of the officers of the exposition was Fredrick Pabst (1836-1904), the German-American brewer for whom the Pabst Brewing company was named. It is clear that this cabinet card photo was taken during, or shortly after 1881. This cabinet card portrait is certainly an interesting remnant of early Milwaukee, and early World’s Fair history.

TWO ADORABLE YOUNG BROTHERS AND THEIR STRAW HATS

This vintage photograph is an exceptional portrait of two young boys. The pair are probably brothers. The boys are well dressed. Note their boots, straw hats, and the older boy’s bow tie. Both boys appear quite pensive. The photo measures about 7 1/4″ x 5 1/2″. The photographer and the location of the studio are unknown.   SOLD

EXTRAORDINARY PORTRAIT OF A LITTLE GIRL IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA (PHOTO BY FAMED PHOTOGRAPHER: J. B. MONACO)

This is one of those special type of photographs that collectors come across on an infrequent basis. The young girl in this portrait is pretty, beautifully dressed, and charming. She is wearing a lace trimmed coat over a lace trimmed dress and is wearing an adorable wide brimmed hat. The 5″ x 7″ image was photographed by the Monaco Studio at 205 Montgomery Avenue in San Francisco, California. J.B. Monaco (1856-1938) was a noted photographer in San Francisco. In fact, a collection of his photographs can be found at the San Francisco History Center at the San Francisco Public Library. In 1875 Monaco arrived in the United States as an immigrant from Switzerland. His name was originally Giovanni Battista. He joined his brother in Eureka, Nevada. Louis Monaco operated a photo studio there and J.B. joined him in the business, thus launching a career as a photographer that would span 62 years. In 1887 J. B. moved to San Francisco where he was soon joined by his brother who died in 1897. During J. B.’s career, he distinguished himself with his earthquake and fire photographs. These images have been described as  dramatic and journalistic. He documented much of early Nevada and Northern California history. His portraiture work of prominent San Francisco individuals and their families is considered to be exceptional. During his career, Monaco was described as the “Dean of North Beach photographers”. PORTRAIT OF THREE BROTHERS AND A SISTER IN COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

This cabinet card photograph features four siblings. The foursome include three brothers and one sister. The children are identified by first name via an inscription on the reverse of the photo. The boys are Emil, Carl, and Niels. I am unable to decipher the sister’s name though it is clear that she was born in 1890. The image comes from the studio of Budtz Muller & Company which was located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Bertel Christian Budtz Muller (1837-1884) was a Danish photographer. Muller began his career as a pharmacist before he became a popular photographer in Copenhagen. In 1884, Muller’s studio was taken over by Ludvig Offenberg. Despite the change of ownership, Offenberg did not change the name of the studio. It is interesting to note that Muller’s will included a provision to set up a fund to support needy photographers. It is also of note that Muller is also known for his portrait of writer, Hans Christian Andersen.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A BABY SITTING IN THE “TESLA” OF ALL BABY CARRIAGES

This cabinet card portrait features a baby sitting in a baby carriage. The carriage is a deluxe baby transporter. The vehicle looks well built and sits high off the ground. The carriage is accessorized with a large umbrella to protect the child from the sun or rain. The photographer of this image is Charles W. Rouse. He operated a photography studio in Jersey City, New Jersey. A list of early New Jersey photographers reveal that Charles Rouse operated out of at least six addresses in Jersey City during his career. In addition, at one point he ran a studio in Belmar, New Jersey. He conducted business at the address listed on this photograph (442 Palisade Avenue) between 1888 and 1894.  (SOLD)

THE LITTLE BOY AND THE SEA (RUSSIAN VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPH)

This vintage real postcard is unique and adorable. A little boy is at the helm of a miniature sailing ship, not far from shore. Beach goers and large boats can be seen in the background. The toy ship commanded by this child is amazingly realistic down to the tiniest details. A logo below the photo states “Anana Kypopm” (the photographer?) and is dated 1964. The photographer’s logo displays a light house and a sailboat which indicates that the photo studio shooting this photograph was likely located in a beach resort town. The photo measures about 5 1/2″ x 3 1/2″.

BEAUTIFUL MEMORIAL PHOTOGRAPH OF AN ADORABLE CHILD POSING NEXT TO LATE MOTHER’S PORTRAIT

This cabinet card portrait is one of those special photographs that appears to be trying to tell the viewer a story. Here is the story as I see it. An adorable and well dressed young child stands on a chair next to the photo portrait of his/her mother. The child’s mother has died and this cabinet card photograph was taken to serve as a keepsake memorial photo. The child can refer to this photo to preserve the memory of his/her mother. This image was beautifully photographed. The pose and the props, as well as the clarity of the image, help make this an exceptional photograph. The talented photographer of this cabinet card is the Bates & Nye Studio in Denver, Colorado. Photographer W. L. Bates appears in the 1881 Denver city directory under the occupation of photographer.  A Colorado genealogical site contends that Bates worked as a photographer in Denver between 1880 and 1890. Preliminary research yielded no information about the second partner in the gallery (Nye).   (SOLD)

“THATS ENTERTAINMENT”: A PRECIOUS LITTLE GIRL AND HER ACCORDION

This vintage photo postcard captures a most adorable wide-eyed little girl sitting on a wooden chair and holding an accordion. The girl’s expression is precious. She seems happy to be posing for this photograph. She is sitting in front of a collection of her toys including a nutcracker man, a dog on wheels, and a doll. The accordion has the logo of the Cucciolo company. This company operated in Italy and this postcard is likely of Italian origin and produced in the 1930’s. Printing on the reverse of the postcard indicates that the postcard was published on Agfa postcard paper. Founded in 1867, “Actien-Gesellschaft fur Anilin-Farrikation” (AGFA) produced chemical liquids for photography. In 1913, the company becgan to produce postcard papers. The company’s primary factory was located in Berlin, Germany.   (SOLD)
