Jewish Children in Brooklyn, New York

jewish_0001

This Cabinet card is a photograph of four Jewish children posing in a studio with a background (perhaps added during the developing process) of Hebrew words. This is  a Jewish New Years card (Rosh Hashanah). The photographer of this Cabinet card is S. Borsuk of Brooklyn, New York.  It is noted that the studio is near Eastern Parkway. Eastern Parkway has some interesting history. It was the first “parkway” and was conceived by Frederick Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1866 (Olmsted designed Central Park). Eastern Parkway was designed as a wide road with several medians with trees, benches, and bike and pedestrian paths. The concept of the parkway was to bring the country to the city.

A Boy on his Tricycle

tricycle

This is a wonderful Cabinet card of a young boy on his tricycle posing in the studio of H. Osterhout in Middletown, New York. Check out the details of the tricycle. In addition, note the young boys outfit. He is wearing a terrific hat, a bow tie or scarf, and great shoes. What is on his lap? It looks like a skirt. Is this young boy actually a young girl? What do you think?

Young Musician

violin2_0002

This is a Cabinet card of a young musician who appears to be ready to play her string instrument. She is dressed nicely for her photograph and is wearing a broach pin. I believe that her musical instrument is a violin but I am hoping a more knowledgeable person can leave me a comment to let me know for certain, what instrument this girl is holding. The photographer and the studio location of this picture is unknown.

Young Black Girl in West Chester, Pennsylvania

This very cute and expressive Black child is posing for this terrific Cabinet card. She doesn’t look like she’s sure how she feels about being in front of the camera. The photographer is Grubb of West Chester, Pennsylvania. To view additional photographs by Grubb, click on this site’s “Photographer: Grubb” category.

ADORABLE GIRL IN COSTUME

girlcostume7

What is the story behind this interesting photograph? We see a very cute young girl posing for her portrait in an unusual costume? She is holding some sort of “stick” in her hand. Is it a riding crop? Is she wearing riding attire from her time period (turn of the century)? Please leave a comment with any ideas you may have about her clothing or the “stick” she is holding. The photographer is Perrtz of York, Pennsylvania. To view other photographs by Perrtz, click on the category “Photographer: Perrtz”.
