CUTE BABY IN SAN FRANCISCO: “I COULD HAVE BEEN A GERBER BABY!”

baby

This very cute baby  was photographed by the Imperial Studio of San Francisco, California. The Cabinet Card is very different from most Cabinet Card photographs of infants. The more typical photo is one in which the baby is wrapped in a blanket and the baby’s whole body is in the image at a far distance. This baby is a adorable and could have been a commercial model if he or she was born in modern times.

Two Cute Kids Posing in Gnesen, (Prussia?)

adorable-kidsTwo adorable kids (most likely siblings) pose in this Cabinet card photograph. The close-up of the baby is terrific and is an unusual pose for photographs of this era. Most babies I have seen in Cabinet cards are photographed from more of a distance. The photograper is Make of Gnesen. My research leaves me uncertain of whether Gnesen was part of Prussia or Germany at the time of this photograph. Please comment if you have information about what nation Gnesen was part of  in the late 1800’s.  Gnesen is currently part of Poland.

Adorable Siblings in Beuthen, Germany

cutes-sibs-in-grmny

These two siblings are just adorable as they pose in the Germania Studio in Beuthen, Germany.  Unlike many children seen in Cabinet Cards, these kids appear very relaxed and in good humor. The boy is cute in his sailor suit and the girl is holding a toy ball. The city of Beuthen is now called Bytom and is in southern Poland. Beuthen became part of Prussia in 1742 and part of the German empire in 1871.  Beuthen was transferred to Poland in 1945.

Cute Little Girl with Big Lace Bonnet in Astoria

cutegirlastoria_0002

This wide eyed cute little girl  is posing for her portrait at the Crow studio in Astoria. Note her her terrific curls. Research was not productive to determine whether this is the Astoria that is located in Queens, New York; or another Astoria, such as the one in Oregon. The only certainty is that the little girl is adorable as she dons her large lace bonnet for her sitting at the photographer.

Cute Siblings in Lebanon, New Hampshire

icebanon_0001

Clinton and Mary Derby are the subjects of this Cabinet card. Brother and sister are dressed adorably. Note the size of the chair the young girl is sitting in, and the fur rug. The photographer is C. E. Lewis of Lebanon, New Hampshire. Lebanon is a city in western New Hampshire. In the mid 1800’s industries began there including furniture manufacturing, machine shops, tanneries, mills (ie woolen textile) and clothing factories. The area attracted many French workers from Quebec.

Jewish Children in Brooklyn, New York

jewish_0001

This Cabinet card is a photograph of four Jewish children posing in a studio with a background (perhaps added during the developing process) of Hebrew words. This is  a Jewish New Years card (Rosh Hashanah). The photographer of this Cabinet card is S. Borsuk of Brooklyn, New York.  It is noted that the studio is near Eastern Parkway. Eastern Parkway has some interesting history. It was the first “parkway” and was conceived by Frederick Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1866 (Olmsted designed Central Park). Eastern Parkway was designed as a wide road with several medians with trees, benches, and bike and pedestrian paths. The concept of the parkway was to bring the country to the city.

A Boy on his Tricycle

tricycle

This is a wonderful Cabinet card of a young boy on his tricycle posing in the studio of H. Osterhout in Middletown, New York. Check out the details of the tricycle. In addition, note the young boys outfit. He is wearing a terrific hat, a bow tie or scarf, and great shoes. What is on his lap? It looks like a skirt. Is this young boy actually a young girl? What do you think?
