MARY BRAMER: SHAPELY WOMAN IN DULUTH, MINNESOTA

A shapely (corseted) young woman poses for her portrait at the Banks Brothers studio in Duluth, Minnesota. It feels a bit uncomfortable calling her shapely, considering she is likely someone’s great great great grandmother. Hopefully, her descendants will accept the Cabinet Card Gallery’s apologies in advance if they should happen to visit this site. The subject is posed behind a short wall and her hat is placed upon the wall. The young woman is named Mary Bramer. Her identity is found written on the reverse of the card. The photographed woman is possibly the Mary Bramer, who was born 11/2/1872 in Minnesota and died 12/7/1959 in Lake County, Minnesota.

WASP WAIST FILLY IN PHILLIE, PENNSYLVANIA

A pretty woman poses for her portrait at the Chillman Studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The wasp waisted woman is beautifully dressed and with the assistance of a corset, has a terrific figure. The photographer, Phillip E. Chillman’s obituary appears in the Bulletin of Photography (1915). Chillman died in 1915 at the age of 73. He was a pioneer of photography in Philadelphia. He opened his studio on Arch Street in the early 1860’s. He held many photography patents. During his 15 year retirement he took up and excelled at water coloring. LOVELY COUPLE IN CAMDEN, MAINE

A wasp waisted woman and a mustachioed man pose for their portrait at the studio of William V. Lane, in Camden, Maine.  The woman is clearly wearing a corset. The photographer, Lane (1849-1903) came to Camden and opened his gallery in 1883. He also had a branch gallery in Vinalhaven, Maine.  He stayed in Camden for 15 years; and then moved to Boston, Massachusetts. While in Camden, Lane was the Chairman of the Board of Assessors and in that capacity, he promoted a new opera house in town.  Lane also served as the President of the Business Men’s Association and had a one year stint as Road Commissioner. PRETTY WOMAN IN HIGH COLLAR AND HIGH FASHION IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

A pretty woman poses for her photograph at the studio of Walter E. Chickering in Boston, Massachusetts. She is dressed in high fashion and high collar. Biographical information about Walter Chickering is difficult to find and further research is needed. It is unknown whether he was related to Elmer Chickering, also of  Boston. GOOD TIME GIRL IN NEW YORK CITY (1897)

The following letter in inscribed on the reverse of this cabinet card. “Dear Friends, This picture I send as a token to remember the good times we had and hoping to see you all again if not in this world then in the next. From a true friend, Lizzie   This day November 4/1897”. This is a sweet letter from a girl who appears to be in her teenage years. The photographer of this cabinet card is The Robinson & Roe Photo Studios, in  New York City. The studio had operations in both Manhattan and Brooklyn. They also operated a studio in Chicago, Illinois. They were prominent photographers in the 1880’s and 1890’s. The pair of photographers are known for their photographs of Inuits from Labrador that were produced during the Worlds Columbian Exposition in Chicago (1893). The Inuits were part of the Eskimo Village exhibition. SOLD

WOMAN POSES FOR INEPT PHOTOGRAPHER IN CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE

This cabinet card photograph features a fashionable New England young woman.  However, the main focus of this photograph is the woman’s purse. The photographer ruined the photograph by forgetting to ask the woman to put her purse in a place out of range of the camera. The woman is wearing  dress gloves, a large bow, a wide brimmed hat, and is slenderized by her corset. The photographer is Bailey of Concord, New Hampshire and he probably was not really inept. However, he certainly made an error when posing the subject for this photograph. A Concord business publication (1890) writes about a photographer named H. C. Bailey. The articles states that Bailey took possession of a photographic studio in Concord in 1888 and that he had lived in Concord since 1860. The article also states that Bailey had a branch studio and art store in Woodsville, New Hampshire. Bailey was reported to have been born in Lisbon, New Hampshire. There is no confirmation that this cabinet cards photographer was H. C. Bailey but it is likely to be the case. In 1890, the Bailey studio was located on State Block, on the corner of Main and School Street.

PRETTY WOMAN IN A FEATHERED HAT IN PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE

A very pretty woman poses for her portrait at the studio of the Davis Brothers, located at 15 Pleasant Street, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She is wearing a bustle and tailored jacket; as well as a fabulous feathered hat. A corset presents a flattering figure. Lewis and Charles Davis were pioneer photographers in Portsmouth They recorded thousands of images between 1856 and 1903. They produced stereoscopic cards and cabinet cards. A collection of their work is archived at the Portsmouth Athenaeum and 160 of their photographs were published in the book, “Around Portsmouth in the Victorian Era”.

FASHIONABLE WOMAN IN NEW YORK CITY

A young woman in a pretty dress poses for the photographer at the studio of Hargrave & Gubelman in New York City, New York. The Post Office Guide (1890) has an advertisement for the studio which indicates that A. J. Hargrave managed the New York City Studio while Theodore Gubelman managed their second studio, which was located in Jersey City, New Jersey. YOUNG WOMAN: SALVATION ARMY WORKER IN LEWISTON, MAINE

A young woman poses for this Cabinet Card photograph at the studio of I. L. Hammond in Lewiston, Maine. She is wearing the attire of the salvation army and is holding a tambourine. Note her bonnet and the structure of the dress which creates the appearance of a thin midriff. One of Hammond’s photographs appears in the autobiography of Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) who was an American modernist painter, poet, and essayist in the early 20th century.

SHAPELY FASHIONISTA IN UTICA, NEW YORK

woman in uticaThis very fashionable woman is looking her best for her day at the photographer (W. P. Wright) in Utica, New York. She is wearing a dark dress with an interesting design coming off her shoulders. She is also wearing a collar pin as well as a wedding band. Her undergarments give her the hour glass shape that was popular during the turn of the century.
