This vintage photo features an adorable little girl preparing to go out in the rain. She is holding an umbrella and wearing a rain hat. Her floral dress is gaudy (in my opinion). The dress clashes with her umbrella. Look carefully and you will see a purse hanging from her right arm. This young girl’s smile and expression more than compensates for any fashion faux pas. An inscription on the reverse of this image indicates that the child’s name is “Simone”. This photograph is of French origin. It measures about 3 1/4″ x 5 3/8″ and is in good condition (see scans).

This series is about the Provinces of France, and the model for this image represents La Bearnaise. This postcard is no.26 in the series. There were a number of different series published. The Province series was one of the more popular series. The models in this series represent different French Provinces and wear traditional clothing from that particular area of the country. This vintage real photo postcard features opera singer, Gabrielle Demougeot. This is a color tinted portrait of the pretty opera singer. There is little biographical information readily available about Miss Demougeot. I was able to find a snippet review of one of her performances. The writer describes her as “a pretty coquette with the voice of a high soprano, of a somewhat sour tone, who was charming and …”. Unfortunately, the snippet stopped mid sentence. This postcard is a studio portrait from the renowned French photographer, Leopold-Emile Reutlinger. His studio was located in Paris, France. The postcard was postmarked in 1909. The front (image side) is in excellent condition while the reverse has a scrape near the center bottom of the card (see scans).

This vintage postcard features a portrait of Vietnamese feudal lord, Le De-Tham (1858-1913). His actual name was Hoang Hoa Tham and he was also known as Commander Tham. He was the leader of the “Yen The” insurrection, a 25 year long popular revolt in the “Yen The” district of Vietnam. The insurrectionists were resisting French colonial rule. Interestingly, his parents were also resistance fighters. They both died as members of a resistance group fighting against the Court of Hue. Most of Le De-Tham’s resistance forces were routed by French troops as they swept through the province in 1890-1891. The French troops suffered a significant setback when De Tham attacked the area’s railroad. The French agreed to a peace plan and that gave De-Tham a regional fiefdom. He became a symbol for other anti-French movements. De-Tham was killed in 1913 by one of his own men.
This vintage photo features a cute little boy sitting in a pedal car. He is flashing a smile at the camera. This photograph was taken at the Thuillier studio in Paris, France. The photo measures about 5 1/4″ x 3 1/2″. (SOLD)
CLOSE UP VIEW OF BARBERS AT WORK AND BARBER SUPPLIES
This vintage real photo postcard features a pop-up barbershop tent in a camp of World War1 era soldiers. The caption on this photograph states “Camp Barber”. The close-up view of the shop is very interesting. There are two adult barbers giving haircuts and a child barber giving a soldier a shave. I wonder how many men reading this would trust a child, who appears to be about 12 years-old, to give them a shave. Check out the barber’s supplies. They can be seen on the table. Note the calendar and the sign advertising sun lotion for sale. There is another sign over the entrance of the tent which advertises the name of the barbershop. Unfortunately, I can not decipher the shop’s name from the letters that are visible. Notice that there is a man sitting near the table drinking a bottle of alcohol. Lets hope he is not drinking a bottle of hair tonic. Another soldier is examining a bottle of “something”. This postcard was published by Valentines as part of the XL series. The Valentine and Sons printing company was founded in Dundee, Scotland in 1851. The founder was James Valentine (1815-1879). The company became the leading manufacturer of picture postcards in Scotland. After James died, his two sons operated the business. The company was purchased by John Waddington Limited in 1963, In 1980, the Valentine business was bought by Hallmark Cards. In 1994, the company ceased operations. The card was printed in Great Britain and has an affixed British postage stamp. The postcard is addressed to someone in Landes, France. This card was postmarked in Crieff, a Scottish market town. This vintage 1930’s photo postcard features three contestants in the Miss Europe contest. Most of the women in the competition had won national beauty contests in their own country and progressed to the Miss Europe contest as a warm-up to competing for the Miss World title. This photographic postcard presents Miss France, Miss Belgium, and Miss Italy. The three contestants are beautiful and marvelously dressed. This postcard was published by Alfred Noyer. His Paris studio operated between 1910 and the 1940’s. He was very talented and well respected. This vintage postcard is in very good condition (see scans). SOLD
This vintage photograph is begging for a story. What is going on in this interesting image? A military man is sitting at a table in a bar with two pretty young woman. He is smoking a long pipe as he opens up a bottle of wine. There are four empty bottles lying on the table. One of the bottles is turned over on it’s side. Five bottles of wine is a lot of wine for just three imbibers. We can assume the women are drinking too, because they have glasses on the table in front of them. The military man is sitting rather close to one of the women but is staring at the other woman with a lecherous expression. What is going on in this interaction? How would you describe the look that the second woman is giving him? Is she accepting or rejecting his flirtatious behavior? A sign on the wall advertises the cost of the wine. The sign is written in French. SOLD
Image 1 is a vintage postcard that features French actress Lucy Gerard (1872-1941). She appeared both on stage and in film. She began her stage career in 1888 at the Theatre de la Renaissance and continued her career in France through 1900. She was absent from the performance scene for quite awhile until she returned to the stage with a “new” name, Lucy Mareil. During her stint away from the stage, she became an antique dealer. Equipped with her new name, Gerard landed numerous roles in theater and cinema from 1911 to 1923. In The IMDb credits Gerard with 24 film roles. The IBDb reports that she appeared in one Broadway play, “A Night with the Pierrots / Sesostra / The Whirl of Society” (1912). Lucy Gerard was a very pretty actress and her photo on this postcard shows her in what appears to be a Middle Eastern costume. On the top left hand corner of the front of the card is the word “Vaudeville”. At the time that this photo was taken, Miss Gerard was appearing at the “Theatre du Vaudeville” in Paris. The photographer of this postcard photo was Charles Pierre Ogerau (1868-1908). He was a Frenchman and was considered an excellent photographer. He was also known to be an anarchist activist at the beginning of the twentieth century. Ogerau opened his photographic studio on boulevard Montmartre in around 1885. He specialized in photographing actresses and his subjects included Cleo de Merode and Emma Calve. This vintage postcard portrait is uncommon. (SOLD)
Image 2 is a Cabinet Card portrait of the Miss Girard. She looks beautiful in this photograph. She is dressed in a fancy gown. This photo was taken at the celebrated Reutlinger studio. The Reutlinger Photography Studio was opened by Charles Reutlinger in Paris in 1850. Reutlinger was of German descent. The studio took portraits of many of the world’s beautiful, rich and famous people of the era. In 1880, Charles’ brother, Emile (1825-1907) took over operation of the studio. He was joined by his son Leopold (1863-1937) in 1883. Leopold began running the studio in 1890 and operated the business until 1930 when he lost an eye in an accident involving a champagne cork. A stamp on the reverse of this cabinet card reveals that it was formerly owned by Culver Pictures of New York City, New York. Culver Pictures has been collecting photographs and illustrations from the 19th and first half of the 20th century, since 1926. These pictures are used in books, films, and other forms of media.
