F. C. MULHOUSE: PORTRAIT OF A FRENCH SOCCER TEAM

mulhow rugby This vintage photograph features the F.C. Mulhouse (1945/46) soccer team. After examining this photo, I was positive that this team was a rugby team, rather than a soccer team. The men on the team are certainly a scrappy group. Some of the guys are built for a scrum. My guess is that the squad was composed of ex French soldiers. World War 2 had ended only a year before this photograph was taken. The Football Club de Mulhouse was established in 1893. The team is often referred to as FCM, or Mulhouse. The team is a French association football club. It is the second oldest football club in France. Mulhouse is a city in eastern France. It is located near the Swiss and German borders. During the times that the Alsace Region was controlled by Germany, the team and city was called Mulhausen. This photograph measures about 5″ x 3″ and is in very good condition.

STRIKINGLY PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN IN MONTLUCON, FRANCE

pretty woman cdv

pretty woman cdv 1 This cartes de visite features a pretty young woman posing for her portrait at the Heron studio in Montlucon, France. She is well dressed and well coiffed. She appears to be holding back a full smile. Her eyes are bright and engaging. Preliminary research yielded little information about Monsieur Heron. The Cabinet Card Gallery exhibits another photograph by Heron. That image is a photo of a bride and groom. It can be seen by entering the name “Heron” in the search box. Montlucon, the studio’s home, is a town in central France on the Cher River. Adolphe Heron (1865-?) was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He got married in Paris (1887) and at that time he was working as a photographer there. He began working in Montlucon in 1893. This cdv photograph is in very good condition (see scans).

school kids Four adorable school girls are captured by an amateur photographer in Agen, France. The girls are carrying their school books and they appear to be quite happy. In the background, it is evident that the sidewalk is filled with pedestrians. An inscription on the reverse of the snap shot indicates that this photo was taken in 1945. It is interesting to note that World War II ended in 1945, no more than a year before this photograph was shot. Agen is located in southwestern France and is beside the Garonne River. The city is 85 miles southeast of Bordeaux. This photo measures about 3 1/2″ x 2 5/8″ and is in excellent condition.  SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A HANDSOME SAILOR AND HIS BRIDE IN SENS, FRANCE

sailor couple

sailor couple 1 This vintage real photo postcard features a handsome wedding couple. The groom is wearing his naval uniform. His hat tells us the name of his ship. Unfortunately, the camera angle only shows the beginning letters of the ship’s name. One possibility is that the ship is named HMS Constance. The Constance was a light cruiser of the Royal Navy that was active in World War I. The ship was launched in 1915. It took part in the Battle of Jutland in 1916. The Constance was decommissioned in 1931 and was in reserve until 1935. The bride in this photo is wearing a pretty dress and a long veil. The photographer of this wedding portrait is Henri Pissot and his studio was located in Sens, France. Sens is a city in the Yonne department in north-central France. To see more photographs by Pissot, place his name in the search box. This real photo postcard has excellent clarity and is in excellent condition (see scans). Addendum: Please see comments section in regard to the sailors country of service and the name of his ship. Thanks to the visitors to the Cabinet Card Gallery that provided the aforementioned information.

RARE PORTRAIT OF A 1910’S FRENCH COUPLE HOLDING HANDS (HOW OBSCENE!)

holding hands

holding hands 1 This vintage real photo postcard features a lovely couple posing for their portrait at an unidentified studio. The couple are well dressed and wearing jewelry. This postcard is unusual because the man and woman are holding hands. Private postcards from this era (c 1910’s) seldom showed public displays of attention. I imagine that this couple was so in love that they couldn’t take their hands off each other. At the very least, the man and woman seen in this photo, were unconventional. This postcard is in of French origin. SOLD

TRADE CARD ADVERTISING “AU BON MARCHE” IN PARIS, FRANCE: THE WORLDS FIRST MODERN DEPARTMENT STORE

TRADE CARDThis vintage trade card advertises “Au Bon Marche” located in Paris, France. The translation from French to English is “At the Good Market” or “The Good Deal”. The shop was founded in 1838 and it sold lace, ribbons, sheets, mattresses, and other miscellaneous goods. The store opened with twelve employees. The entrepreneur Aristide Boucicaut (1810-1877) became a partner in the business in 1852 and instituted many innovative changes in the business. The store became more and more successful evidenced by its rising revenue. The store is known as the first modern department store. Interestingly, Gustave Eiffel, creator of the Eifel Tower, was involved in the redesign of the store. A drawing of the Au Bon Marche can be seen on the back of the card. The picture on the front of the card features a Black woman in a fancy dress and wearing feathers in her hair. She is walking into the store and is being directed to the entrance by a well dressed gentleman. The caption on the right bottom of the trade card states “No Purse”. Apparently this woman is going into the department store without any money. This trade card was published by Testu & Massin. This vintage trade card is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF AN INQUISITVE TODDLER IN ROANNE, FRANCE (CARTE DE VISITE)

dessender

This Carte de Visite features an adorable child displaying a skeptical but very inquisitive expression. The toddler is sitting on a chair and wearing a short gown with strings across his/her shoulders. The child’s attire would be unacceptable today due to safety concerns. The photograph was taken by Jean Emile Dessendier of Roanne, a city in central France. The cdv was produced in 1889 or later as evidenced by the printing on the bottom border of the photograph which states that Dessendier won a photography medal at the 1889 Exposition at the University of Paris.  (SOLD)
