This vintage real photo postcard features pretty French theatre actress Jesicka. She looks elegant. Note her plethora of hair. Jesicka’s photograph was taken by Paul Boyer (1861-1908), who operated a photo studio in Paris, France. He photographed many celebrities. This postcard was published by Rotophot (RPH) as part of a series (7426). The company was based in Berlin, Germany.  This postcard is very uncommon. I could not find another “Jesicka” postcard during my preliminary research. However, I did find that she appears in a cigarette card series. (SOLD)

PRETTY YOUNG WOMAN RECLINING ON A COUCH AND READING A “FORBIDDEN BOOK” (RISQUE)

This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty young woman reclining on a couch and reading a book. The caption on the card indicates that she is reading a “Forbidden Book”. She is likely reading a racy novel. This postcard is a bit risque for it’s era (c. 1905). This postcard was published by Paul Fink (Germany) as part of a series (No. 5009/3). He was a fine art printer that operated between 1899 and 1905. The stamp box of this postcard has an interesting story. “NBC” (Neue Bromsilber Convention) was a price cartel established in 1909 that continued until the 1930’s. The purpose of the cartel was to ensure that the minimum price charged for postcards was kept at a sufficiently profitable level. (SOLD)

PRETTY WOMAN LIVES HARD KNOCK LIFE IN MUNICH, GERMANY : CABINET CARD

A pretty woman poses for her portrait at the studio of Alois Koestler in Munich, Germany. She is shapely and beautifully dressed. Her facial expression gives her the appearance of someone who is extremely stressed. It is as if her eyes are saying “I can’t take much more of this pressure!”. She look frazzled and exhausted. I wonder if this is just pure personal projection on my part or if other observers of this photograph see this young woman as appearing overwhelmed?  Hopefully, some visitors to the cabinet card gallery will leave their impression in the comment section. It is interesting to note that this photograph may have been taken during difficult times in Munich. Pre war was certainly tense and stressful times. Following the outbreak of World War I (1914); the Allies blockaded Germany and there were food and fuel shortages in Munich. Perhaps the subjects “hard knock life” appearance has to do with the stressful impact the war had on civilian life.     SOLD
