GORGEOUS WEDDING PORTRAIT OF A GERMAN COUPLE

This vintage real photo postcard features a very handsome looking German wedding couple. The bride and groom look very serious on their special day. They are both very well dressed. The bride is wearing a beautiful veil and note the lovely bouquet of flowers that she is holding. A faint embossed stamp gives a clue concerning the photographer. The word “Birkenfeld” is visible. “Birkenfeld” is the name of the location of the photographer’s studio. The photographer’s name is Stadelmanz. The message on the reverse of the postcard appears to be written to Fritz, the signer’s friend. Hopefully a cabinet card gallery visitor (the vast unpaid research department) can leave a comment with a translation of the message.This vintage postcard portrait is most likely from the 1920’s or 1930’s and is in excellent condition.

PORTRAIT OF A FRENCH BOY AND HIS BICYCLE

This vintage real photo postcard features a well dressed young boy posing with his bicycle. The boy is wearing a black armband. Black armbands were first utilized as a sign of mourning in 1770’s England. This postcard is of French origin and was published circa 1910. FRAT BOYS FORM A 10-PERSON PYRAMID IN OLD TOWN, MAINE

This vintage real photo postcard features ten well balanced young men standing in a pyramid formation. The guys on the bottom of the pyramid seem surprisingly relaxed. It is apparent that they have performed this act before. The postcard has a postmark and an address from Oldtown, Maine. The town is best known for being the home of the Old Town Canoe Company, a manufacturer of canoes and kayaks. The company was born there in 1898. Old Town is located near the University of Maine’s Orono campus (established in 1865). It is likely that the fellows in this photograph were students there. Perhaps they are all members of the same fraternity and this the pyramid is a fraternity stunt.   SOLD

AN ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL AND THE CAT IN THE HAT

This vintage real photo postcard offers a fun portrait of a very adorable little girl and her cat. The cat is not an ordinary cat. It is the cat in the hat; and the cat is also wearing a dress, or coat. The little girl seems to be very happy while her poor cat seems to be very unhappy about wearing human clothing. The child must be a futurist. Somehow she knew that a day would arrive, many decades after her time, that people would buy wardrobes for their pets. This postcard was published by the Rapid Photo Company. The company existed between 1901 and 1910. It was located in London, England. The company is best known for their portraits of actresses. The postcard is part of a series (Series 191, no. 3589).  (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF A PAJAMA CLAD RECLINING BRITISH BEAUTY

The reverse of this vintage real photo postcard has printed advertising that describes the woman seen in this photo as a “British Beauty”. She certainly is beautiful and she seems to be wearing night clothes as she reclines on a mat and rests her arms on a pillow. The postcard was published by Rotary Photo of London, England. The message on the verso wishes the receiver of the postcard, a happy birthday. The card is likely from the 1910’s.  (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF THREE BEAUTIFUL WOMEN DRESSED IN THE FASHION OF THREE DIFFERENT CULTURES

This vintage postcard is another one of those images that immediately piques my interest. I wish I knew what brought these three women together and why they are dressed the way that they are. It seems to me that the women are dressed in a fashion to represent the clothing of different ethnicities. The woman wearing the beads represents gypsies. The woman with the parasol and kimono represents the Japanese culture. The woman with a flower in her hair, represents Spain. Perhaps these ladies are dressed to go to a party. Note the cat sitting next to Miss Spain. This image is from a private studio. There is a studio name and location lightly embossed on the front of the postcard. This intriguing photo was taken at a studio located in Constanta, Romania. The city is located in the Dobruja region of Romania, on the Black Sea coast. The stamp box in this postcard indicates that the postcard was produced by K Ltd., sometime between 1918 and 1936.   (SOLD)

A STREET SCENE IN AGUA PRIETA, SONORA, MEXICO (BEFORE THE FIASCO)

Welcome to Agua Prieta. The town’s name is not very appetizing. In English, the town’s name is “Brown Water”. According to the postcard’s AZO stamp box, this street scene photo was taken between 1924 and 1949. The photo shows “Avenue 3” in Agua Prieta. Note the signage in the photograph. There is a restaurant, a cafe, and the Silver $ Dollar Bar. Further down the avenue are some old cars.  The town is located in the northeastern corner of the Mexican state of Sonora. It is a border town and is adjacent to the town of Douglas, Arizona. Agua Prieta was developed at the end of the 19th century as railroads were built between Douglas and the Mexican town of Nacozari. The trains would transport minerals and other goods. The first settlers in Agua Prieta were employed by the US mining company Phelps Dodge Corporation. The company was based in Douglas, Arizona. The town of Agua Prieta was unofficially founded in 1899 but did not become an independent municipality until 1916. This photograph was taken long before the fiasco of the current US immigration policy. Today, Douglas has a population of about 16,500 people. Although the town is depressed, the border crossing remains busy. According to US Customs and Border Protection records for 2016, more than 3.8 million people passed through the town’s port of entry on foot, or by car. It is important to note that many of these people were going between Mexico and the US to visit family, conduct business, or shop. Therefore, their visits were of short duration. I hope that Congress will be able to formulate and pass a more rational, humane, and constructive immigration policy; and do so in a timely fashion.  (SOLD)

A young woman sits side saddle on a small horse, or donkey, as her boyfriend, or husband provides moral support. The horse has appaloosa type coloring. The woman is wearing a fringed western dress and a nice smile. The gentleman is wearing a suit accessorized with a bow tie and a bowler hat. This vintage real photo postcard is from a private studio; not mass produced. The postcard was published sometime between 1904 and 1918.

PORTRAIT OF ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN OF FRANCE (PHOTO BY JEAN AGELOU)

This vintage real photo postcard is part of a series named “Les Plus Belles Femmes de France” (The Most Beautiful Women of France). This series is about the Provinces of France, and the model for this image represents La Berrichonne (The Berry). This postcard is no. 41 in the series. There were a number of different series published. The Province series was one of the more popular series. The models in this series represent different French Provinces and wear traditional clothing from that particular area of the country. The province of Berry is a historical province of France that disappeared with the French Revolution. It is one of the oldest agricultural areas in France. To view other postcards from the provincial series, place the words “Les Plus Belles” in the search box. This postcard was published by well known photographer Alfred Noyer. The celebrated photographer supervised a large photo studio in Paris. The Noyer Studio operated from 1910 until the 1940’s. Many of his early postcards were reproductions of artworks. He also produced illustrated patriotic postcards during World War I. With the onset of the 1920’s he began producing postcards of children and women. Many of the postcards he produced of women were nudes or risque images. Some of his postcards list his name while others are simply marked “AN”. The photographer of this postcard portrait is Jean Agelou (1878-1921). Agelou was a French photographer of the 1910’s and 1920’s who is best known for his erotic and nude photographs. He was born in Egypt and not much is known about his private life. Agelou generally used models between the age of 20 and 24 years-old. He had a favorite model. Her name was “Fernande” and in addition to modeling, she was Agelou’s lover. Her full name was Fernande Barrey (1893-1960). She was a prostitute by trade. She also modeled for for painters (Amadeo Modigliani and Chaim Soutine). Fernande later became a painter. Although the 1900’s was the “golden age” of erotic photograph, photographers who took such risque photos had to use discretion. As a result, Agelou signed his work “JA”. In 1908, nudity in photographs was banned in France and photographers had to cover nude women images with strategically placed undergarments or other materials. Nude images had to circulate on the down low. They were sent in the mail inside of envelopes. Fernande remained popular and her erotic photographs were enjoyed by soldiers on both sides during World War I. Jean Agelou died in 1921; the result of a car accident. His brother George, who managed Jean’s business, also was killed in the crash.   (SOLD)
