This vintage real photo postcard is a group photo of kitchen staff from an unidentified restaurant or home. The chef can be seen on the right end of the second row. He is wearing a chef’s cap. The two young woman in the front row are holding their caps. It is not clear if they are servers or cooks. The man and woman in the center of the first row may be the owners of the restaurant or else help manage the restaurant or residence’s kitchen. Also posing in this postcard portrait is a medium sized dog. This postcard appears to be from around the 1920’s. (SOLD)

PHRYNE : NINA BARKIS : GREEK COURTESAN : EMAILLOGRAPHIE : RPPC

This color tinted vintatge real photo postcard features actress, Nina Barkis playing the ancient Greek courtesan, Phryne. She has very long hair and she is shielding herself with a transparent lacey fabric. Miss Barkis was an opera singer and dancer. She was known for playing “Salome” and for modelling for photographer Jean Agelou. She also appeared on cards by postcard publisher, Gerlach. This image was created by a photographic process called “Emaillographie”. It is interesting that the first five letters of the technique is “Email”. This vintage postcard is of French origin. SOLD

POST OFFICE : KENTON, OHIO : LITHOGRAPHIC POSTCARD

This vintage lithographic postcard features a depiction of the Post Office in Kenton, Ohio. According to the message on the reverse of the card, the Post Office was new at the time the postcard was published. This postcard was published by Curt Teich (Chicago). The postcard was distributed by the “Wagner Post Card And Novelty Co. The firm was located in Delpho, Ohio. This vintage postcard is in good condition (see scans).

BLATZ’S MILWAUKEE BEER : ADVERTISING : ELEVEN WELL DRESSED GUYS : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card portrait features a group of eleven men posing in front of a business with a Blatz’s Milwaukee Lager Beer advertising sign hanging on the wall of the building. The men are well dressed. Apparently they are businessmen gathered for some type of meeting or get-together.  A few of the men are smoking cigars. The Blatz Brewing Comany was a major brewer in Milwaukee. It operated from 1851 through 1959. The company developed from the John Braun’s City Brewery.Valentin Blatz was hired by John Braun and when Braun died 1in 1851, Blatz bought Braun’s business and married Braun’s wife. Blatz was trained at breweries in Bavaria. Blatz’s Milwaukee brewery was bady damaged by a fire in 1872 but he used the disaster as an opportunity to enlarge and modernize the brewery in the rebuilding process. In 1875, Blatz developed a bottling department that allowed him to ship his beer nationally. Blatz sold his company to a British syndicate (United States Brewing Company” in 1891. He continued to lead the company until his death in 1894. He was succeeded by his son. The company was sold a couple of times before it was purchased by Pabst in 1958. Although Blatz’s Brewery was sold a few more times, the label remains in Pabst’s portfolio. (SOLD)

GABRIELLE ROBINNE: BEAUTIFUL, TALENTED, AND POPULAR FRENCH ACTRESS

Anyone who collects vintage theatrical/film actress postcards, is very familiar with the subject of this real photo postcard. Gabrielle Robinne (1886-1980) is an actress that was widely photographed. The reason for the production of so many postcards featuring Miss Robinne is that she was very popular during her era. Certainly, one of the reasons for her popularity, was her great beauty. Robinne was born in France and was a student at the Paris Conservatory. In 1904 she joined the company of Sarah Bernhardt and later joined the Theatre Michel in St. Petersburg, Russia. Her career soared when she began performing at the Comedie-Francaise in 1907. She remained with the company until 1938. She made her film debut in the 1906 production of “Le troubadour”. Two years later she had her first huge success in “L’assassinat du Duc de Guise” (1908). She is considered by many to be the first French star of the silent film era. She charmed her audiences with her beauty and excellent acting. Gabrielle Robinne shared her time between stage and film. The IMDb reports that she appeared in nearly fifty films between 1906 and 1973.She was known for “Conquered Hate” (1913,) “Struggle for Life” (1914), and “La reine de Saba” (1913). Robinne was married to actor Rene Alexandre from 1912 until she was widowed in 1946. Her work in the theater and film was recognized by France when she was made an Officer of the Legion of Honor, the highest French order of Merit. The photographer of Robinne’s portrait on this card is Leopold Reutlinger (1863-1937). He was a leading photographer of his time and was, and is, renowned for his photographs of celebrities and beautiful women. TWO FATHERS HELD HOSTAGE BY THEIR RIFLE WIELDING YOUNG SONS…. LARGE PASSIVE DOG

Despite the title of this entry, this photograph is far from a hostage situation. Instead, two dandies pose with their young children and a larger Retriever dog. Both children are holding rifles, presumably toy rifles. The identity of the photographer, the identity of the subjects, and the location of the studio, are unknown. SOLD

PAULAY ERZSI : HUNGARIAN FILM AND THEATER ACTRESS : HARP : STAGE FRIGHT : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features Hungarian stage and film actress, Erzsi Paulay (1886-1959). Her parents were both actors. Her father died when she was eight years of age and her mother had to return to work. Erzsi was known to possess exceptional beauty and spoke very well. She graduated from the Academy of Drama (1904) and joined the National Theater. Erzsi had a problem. She was an excellent actress during rehearsals but when it came to performing in front of an audience, her performance was weak.Her apparent stage fright kept her from becoming an excellent actress. However, she was popular among her colleagues. After her first marriage failed she married Italian ambassador Count Vittorio Cerrutti in 1923. She then retired from acting. She and her husband travelled the world. The pair lived in Tokyo, Moscow and Rome. The IMDb credits her with five film roles between 1915 and 1928. This real photo postcard is in good condition. SEVEN BOYS AND THREE DOGS STAND ACROSS A DIRT ROAD : HUNTING : RPPC : 1911

This vintage divided back real photo postcard features seven boys and three dogs standing across a dirt road. One of the boys is holding a rifle and the presence of the three dogs indicate that this image has a hunting theme. Note the houses and trees visible in the background.
