SAD CHILD IN READING, PENNSYLVANIA
A sad child poses for a portrait at the studio of J. S. Fritz, in Reading, Pennsylvania. The frowning child is standing on a bench and wearing a fancy outfit. Note the large bow and the unattractive hat. The name of the child, “Jemil Arman”, is penciled on the reverse of the cabinet card. Research yielded no information about Jemil Arman or photographer, J. S. Fritz. It is possible that a legibility problem may have resulted in an incorrect interpretation of the subject’s name. ADDENDUM Additional research resulted in discovering information about photographer, John S. Fritz. He was born on his father’s Pennsylvania farm in 1861. He left home at 15 to work in Philadelphia and while there, learned photography. He then worked with his brother in law as a traveling photographer. He left the business to pursue other occupations and he worked in both Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. He returned to photography and at some point operated a photography studio located at 852 Penn Street in Reading. He was married to Elizabeth Apffel and had at least three children. (SOLD)
FIVE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS : ANTIQUE TOOLS : DIRTY FACES : LAYING PIPE : 1911
This vintage occupational real photo postcard features five construction workers (laborers) posing in their work clothing. Note that two of the men are holding tools and that all but one of the men are wearing work gloves. A couple of the men have dirty faces from their labor. The men are posed in front of, what appears to be, a large pipe. Is the pipe the focus of their work? This card was postmarked in 1911. The postcard was sent to Chicago from El Paso, Texas. The card was produced by a private studio and is nearly certain to be “one of a kind”. This antique postcard is 111 years old. SOLD

This vintage real photo postcard features two lovely and well-dressed couples. The men in this photograph are actually cross dressed women. There is a story here but it is lost to history. LITTLE GIRL AT A TABLE IN LANCASTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE
This cabinet card features a cute little girl sitting a a table. On the table, lies a photograph. Who is the subject of the photograph lying on the table? Is it an image of a parent that passed away? This seems like a possibility because the little girl seems to be quite sullen. The photographer of this image was J. P. Haseltine of Lancaster, New Hampshire. Haseltine was listed in Lancaster Business Directories (1877,1882). He was also mentioned as a founding partner in the incorporation of the Lancaster Water Company (1891). This cabinet card portrait has a gold border and is in excellent condition (See Scans).

PORTRAIT OF A SAILOR FROM THE U.S.S. BOSTON IN NAGASAKI, JAPAN (1896)
This cabinet card portrait features a uniformed sailor from the navy ship, the U.S.S. Boston. The photograph was taken by Kiosheikwan of Nagasaki, Japan. The sailor probably had the photograph taken in order to send it to family or a girlfriend back home in the United States. A web site dedicated to the U.S.S. Boston and the men who served on her, was very helpful in providing details about the ship and the dates it served in the Pacific. The site reveals that there has been seven ships named “Boston” that served America since 1776. The ship that the sailor in the photograph served on was a Protected Cruiser that sailed between 1887 and 1940. She was the U.S. Navy’s second steel ship and was propelled by sails and/or steam engine. The ship’s crew consisted of about 284 men. Initially. the ship patrolled the waters of Latin America and Haiti, but in 1892, she began to serve in the Pacific. In 1896, she was attached to the Asiatic Station at Yokohama, Japan. When the Spanish American War occurred in 1898,the U.S.S. Boston took part in the Battle of Manila Bay as well as, the capture of Manila. Reviewing the history of the ship, it seems probable that this photograph was taken in 1896 or 1897. (SOLD)
ST. PAUL’S FOOTBALL PLAYER :IDENTIFIED : PLAYED CENTER: CDV : CONCORD, NH (1913)
This carte de visite portrait features a football player who played on the 1913 team of St. Paul’s school. The school was located in Concord, New Hampshire.The player is identified on the reverse of the image as “Oly Goodrich”. He was the center of the team. The inscription on the reverse of the image also reports that St. Paul’s beat Trinity with a game score of 13 to 0. This photograph was taken by W.G.C. Kimball (1843-1916) or Howard A. Kimball (1865-1929). In fact the Kimball clan produced several more photographers in the area. The Kimball studio was located in Concord, New Hampshire. This cdv photograph is signed by Oly Goodrich. St. Paul’s School (SPS) is a very selective college prep boarding school. It is considered one of the finest boarding schools in the US. The school was founded in 1856 to educate boys from Upper-class families. It later admitted girls and a more diverse student population. The school exists today and has about 530 students. SOLD
