BOARDWALK EMPIRE : PORTRAIT OF FIVE CLASSY CITIZENS FROM THE ELITE STUDIO ON THE BOARDWALK IN ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY

This vintage real photo postcard features five well dressed citizens being photographed by the Elite Studio, located on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The gents and ladies look like they wandered off the set of “Boardwalk Empire”. Note the hats worn by this gathering of older adults. The 1919 Boyd’s Atlantic City Directory reports that the Elite Studio was operated by photographers Erna Hoefle and Ferdinand U. Latimer. Erna is a female name. Women operating photo studios during this era was not very common. This postcard has an Artura stamp box which indicates that the card was published sometime between 1908 and 1924. This vintage postcard is in excellent condition (see scans).

This cabinet card portrait features two pretty young women sharing a tender moment. The women are dressed stylishly. Note their gloves. The woman in the dark dress is sharing a sweet smile. It is likely that these young women are teenagers and sisters. This photograph was taken at the Elite Studio which was located in Omaha, Nebraska. The studio was operated by Charles M. Craven.  SOLD

MR AND MRS SPRINGGAT POSE FOR THEIR PORTRAIT IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

Being in San Francisco in the 1880’s or 1890’s was a prime time for exciting and interesting experiences. Mr and Mrs Springgat were in San Francisco during this era and decided to document their presence by having their portrait taken at the Elite Gallery. The reverse of this cabinet card reveals that the studio was operated by Mr. Jones and Mr. Lotz. To view another photograph by this pair’s gallery, click on the category “Photographer: Jones & Lotz”. The reverse of the cabinet card also informs us of the identity of the couple seen in this image. Preliminary research failed to find information about this couple.

FAMILY PORTRAIT IN GREAT FALLS, MONTANA

A family of four poses for their portrait at the Elite Studio in Great Falls, Montana. Everyone is dressed in their nicest clothes for their day at the photographic studio. Note how the older daughter is posed. Her love for her dad is quite evident. Father’s pride in his family is also evident in this photograph. This family has the appearance of a Scandinavian family and in fact, the photograph is from the estate of a Norwegian immigrant family that settled in North Dakota and Montana. It is not clear who operated the Elite Studio at the time of this photograph. The Bulletin of Photography (1916) reported that “Louis Heyn of the Elite Studio sold an interest in his business” to employee Harry J. Keeley. It is likely that the studio belonged to Heyn at the time of this photograph.
