When Ole Johnson passed away at ninety-four years of age, it is likely that his family commissioned a photographer to produce this memorial cabinet card. Due to the commonality of the name Ole Johnson (especially in the North Central states where many Scandanvians settled) , research yielded no biographical information about the Mr. Johnson pictured in this photograph. A family of four poses for their portrait at the Elite Studio in Great Falls, Montana. Everyone is dressed in their nicest clothes for their day at the photographic studio. Note how the older daughter is posed. Her love for her dad is quite evident. Father’s pride in his family is also evident in this photograph. This family has the appearance of a Scandinavian family and in fact, the photograph is from the estate of a Norwegian immigrant family that settled in North Dakota and Montana. It is not clear who operated the Elite Studio at the time of this photograph. The Bulletin of Photography (1916) reported that “Louis Heyn of the Elite Studio sold an interest in his business” to employee Harry J. Keeley. It is likely that the studio belonged to Heyn at the time of this photograph.
This Cabinet Card portrait features a rather rotund gentleman with very impressive and well groomed sideburns. The subject is very well dressed a sporting a pocket watch with a large linked chain. The photographer was Carl M. Olson of Goteborg, Sweden. Goteborg is the second largest city in Sweden. The gentleman in this photograph is likely O. W. Lundquist. The name is handwritten on the reverse of this image. The photograph was taken sometime during or after 1897. This fact can be established because the reverse of the card indicates that the photographer won a photography award in Stockholm, sometime during 1897.
