SERIOUS SIDEBURNS IN PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA (1886)

A gentleman poses for this cabinet card portrait at the studio of the Broadbent Brothers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The man has formidable bushy sideburns. The reverse of the cabinet card identifies the subject as John R. Elliot and indicates the photograph was taken in 1886. The Broadbent Brothers were the sons of prominent daguerreotype photographer,  Samuel Broadbent. The elder Broadbent was in partners with W. Curtis Taylor in the photography business. Samuel Broadbent died in 1880 and Taylor then partnered with Sam’s sons until they bought out the business in 1884. HANDSOME LONG HAIRED YOUNG MAN IN FOND DU LAC, WISCONSIN

A long haired young man poses for his portrait at the studio of Miller & Chadbourne in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. The gentleman in this photograph is formally attired and has a very serious expression. No information has been found about photographer Miller, but research provides some information about photographer Cyrus Chadbourne. The journal, Photo Beacon (1897), reports that Chadbourne was President of the Photographers Association of Wisconsin. Other photography publications mention Chadbourne as early as 1883 and as late as 1924, when his studio was torn down.

LOVELY COUPLE IN CAMDEN, MAINE

A wasp waisted woman and a mustachioed man pose for their portrait at the studio of William V. Lane, in Camden, Maine.  The woman is clearly wearing a corset. The photographer, Lane (1849-1903) came to Camden and opened his gallery in 1883. He also had a branch gallery in Vinalhaven, Maine.  He stayed in Camden for 15 years; and then moved to Boston, Massachusetts. While in Camden, Lane was the Chairman of the Board of Assessors and in that capacity, he promoted a new opera house in town.  Lane also served as the President of the Business Men’s Association and had a one year stint as Road Commissioner. ALERT BABY SITTING IN A BABY CARRIAGE IN OTTAWA, ILLINOIS.

This scalloped edged cabinet card captures a baby sitting in a carriage in the studio of J. A. Wilson &  August F. Gerding, in Ottawa, Illinois. The attentive baby seems to be intensely surveying the studio. A blanket sits neatly atop the carriage. WOUNDED BULGARIAN MILITARY OFFICER

This photograph is a portrait of a wounded non commissioned Bulgarian military officer. The preceding description of this gentleman is not confirmed information. It is also unknown, due to translation limitations, what the name of the photographer is and in what country and city the studio was located in. Hopefully, someone from cabinet card gallery’s vast unpaid research department , will leave a comment providing additional information about the subject of this photograph.

YOUNG CHILD AND WOODEN HORSE IN RECKLINGHAUSEN, GERMANY

A not too happy child is photographed with a beautifully carved wooden horse in this cabinet card. The toy horse is mounted on a wheels and the horse has a mane, bridle and reins. The child appears to be holding a horse whip. The photograph is by Victoria of Recklinghausen, Germany. Recklinghausen is located in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany.

HUSBAND AND WIFE POSE FOR INDIVIDUAL PORTRAITS IN KEOKUK, IOWA

A very handsome couple pose for individual portraits at Libby’s New Photograph Parlors in Keokuk, Iowa. The reverse of the card has a penciled inscription indicating the location was Keokuk, and research confirms that Libby’s was located there. This couple is beautifully dressed and have stylish hairstyles. They have the appearance of prominent citizens of Keokuk. It is also possible that they are important visitors to the town.
