THREE TEENAGE BOYS IN THEIR FINE CLOTHES AND DERBY HATS IN ROCHESTER, NEW YORK

bowlers bowlers 1 This cabinet card photograph features three well dressed young men wearing derby hats. They are wearing long overcoats over their suits. This photo must have been taken in winter. The young men appear to be in their teenage years. An interesting side note is worth mentioning about derby hats. Derbies are made of hard felt and have a rounded crown. They were created by two London hat makers in 1849. Their last name was Bowler and the hat was named after them. Bowlers (Derbies in the USA) were worn with semi formal and informal clothing. They were worn by working class men during the last half of the 19th century. In later years they were worn by middle and upper class men. Two of the men seen in the photograph are identified. They are Max and Carl Stenzel. Presumably, they are brothers. The photograph was taken by the G. J. Stage Art Photography studio in Rochester, N.Y.. George Stage was born in 1828, He appears in the New York Census (1905) as does his wife (Maggie) and their fourteen year old son. Interestingly, at the time of this census George was 77 years of age and Maggie was just 36 years old. George died in 1910. He is listed as a photographer in the Rochester 1909 directory, indicating he worked until he was 80 years-old. He is also listed as a photographer in the 1887 directory. Therefore he was a photographer for at least 22 years.   SOLD

PORTRAIT OF A HANDSOME SAILOR AND HIS BRIDE IN SENS, FRANCE

sailor couple

sailor couple 1 This vintage real photo postcard features a handsome wedding couple. The groom is wearing his naval uniform. His hat tells us the name of his ship. Unfortunately, the camera angle only shows the beginning letters of the ship’s name. One possibility is that the ship is named HMS Constance. The Constance was a light cruiser of the Royal Navy that was active in World War I. The ship was launched in 1915. It took part in the Battle of Jutland in 1916. The Constance was decommissioned in 1931 and was in reserve until 1935. The bride in this photo is wearing a pretty dress and a long veil. The photographer of this wedding portrait is Henri Pissot and his studio was located in Sens, France. Sens is a city in the Yonne department in north-central France. To see more photographs by Pissot, place his name in the search box. This real photo postcard has excellent clarity and is in excellent condition (see scans). Addendum: Please see comments section in regard to the sailors country of service and the name of his ship. Thanks to the visitors to the Cabinet Card Gallery that provided the aforementioned information.

HORSE AND BUGGY STEADIED BY A YOUNG FARM BOY: HIS TWO SISTERS ARE IN THE BUGGY

family buggy

family buggy screen shot This vintage real photo postcard features a young farm boy steadying a horse by holding on to it’s bridle. The horse is hitched to a buggy. Presumably, the girls occupying the buggy are the boy’s two younger sisters. In the background, stands a large barn or stable. Also in the background is an adult woman who is standing on the porch of the house. She is wearing a hat and holding an umbrella. On the ground next to the horse is a cluster of boxes and a pail. This photograph appears to have been taken out in the country, where and when, horse and buggy transportation was not uncommon.  (SOLD)

PHOTOGRAPH OF A FRENCH “FREE RADIO” STUDIO AND A FEMALE ANNOUNCER

radio This vintage photograph features a female radio announcer behind a microphone. The studio has another electronic device on the table. It is my guess that the device is a speaker or transmitter.  The previous owner of this photo wrote some notes on the reverse of the image. The notes indicate that this is a photograph of a studio that was a part of “Free Radio: France”. Initially, free radio was synonymous with the term “pirate radio”. Such radio stations were popular in 1970’s Europe and were proponents of freedom of expression, and the end of state monopolies controlling radio and television. In France, state monopolies controlled radio until 1981. Prior to World War II, there were about a dozen independent and commercial radio stations operating in France. It is possible that this image comes from “Radio Andorra” because the image was part of a collection of other photos related to radio broadcasting in Andorra. “Radio Andorra” was one of the oldest French private radio stations. The radio station broadcasted from Andorra between 1939 and 1981. Since Andorra was not part of France, the station could bypass the demands of the French monopoly. This vintage photo is a terrific piece of  European and French radio history. The photograph measures about 2 1/8″ x 2 5/8″ and is in very good condition.

HAUNTING PHOTOGRAPH OF NORTH AFRICAN MAN AND HIS DAUGHTER

refugee This photograph of a North African man and his daughter is one of the most moving photos that I have ever seen. This image pulls at my heart strings and won’t let go. I know very little about the story behind this photo. I assume that we are looking at a father and daughter. Each is displaying an expression of grave concern. In fact, they look traumatized. The previous owner of this photograph stated that the photo was taken in North Africa during a time of war. The image is a snapshot and measures about 4 1/4″ x 3 1/4″. The photograph is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A LOVELY YOUNG LADY IN KENOSHA, WISCONSIN

lamarsh

lamarsh 1 A lovely young lady poses for her full length carte de visite portrait at the LaMarsh studio in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She is wearing a collar pin and holding a parasol. She appears to be in her teenage years. The book, “Portrait and Biographical Album of Racine and Kenosha Counties, … (1892) includes some background information about photographer, Bernard LaMarsh. He was born in Prussia in 1848. His father spent some time in the military but he was a butcher by trade. The LaMarsh family moved to the United States in 1856. The family first settled in Chicago but moved to Kenosha in 1872. During his teenage years he helped his father in the butcher business and in 1869, he entered the US Army as a drummer. He served for four years and then returned to Kenosha where he took a job as a barber. He was unhappy in the tonsorial business and in 1874 began learning photography with A. F. Wells who operated a gallery in Kenosha. After a few months of training, he bought a gallery in Marseilles, Illinois. After just a year and a half he sold his business and went to Chicago for further training with photographer, J. Steffens. In 1876, LaMarsh returned to Kenosha and opened a gallery which he ran for two years. From 1878 until 1884, he partnered with S. W. Truesdell. The partnership ended because LaMarsh bought out Mr. Truesdell. In 1879, LaMarsh married Augusta Harlis. She was ten years his junior. LaMarsh died in 1929. This cdv photograph has excellent clarity and is in good condition (see scans).

AN AFRICAN AMERICAN MAN AND HIS 1952 CUSTOM PONTIAC IN HOUSTON, TEXAS (PHOTO BY CHIP LORD)

pontiac This vintage real photo chrome postcard features an African American man and his custom 1952 Pontiac. This automobile is certainly “one of a kind”. Text on the reverse of the postcard indicates that the car has painted seat covers. In addition, the description asserts that the chrome work took years to finish. The artist decided to remain anonymous. This photograph was taken in Houston, Texas in 1973. The photographer was Chip Lord and the publisher was Foto Folio, located in New York City. Additional credits were attributed to Dover Press. This postcard was mailed in 1984, eleven years after the photograph was taken. It was mailed from Everett, Washington, to Erie, Pennsylvania. The photographer, Chip Lord  (1944- ) is a very successful American media artist and has led an interesting life. He is best known for being a co-founder and practitioner at the media collective, known as Ant Farm. The firm was started in 1968. Wikipedia asserts that his work is often “nostalgic, but edged with an ironic detachment”.  A graduate of Tulane, he became an architect. He taught at the University of Houston (Go Cougars….I got my graduate degree there). He also taught at a couple of the University of California Campuses. Lord is also known for many of his projects, including the “Cadillac Ranch”.  He shares credit for this public art installation and sculpture with other artist from Ant Farm.  The exhibition is comprised of ten half buried cadillacs facing nose-first in the ground. The cars ranged from 1949 through 1963, and the exhibition illustrated the evolution of Cadillac’s tail fins. In addition, there is symbolism.  Cadillacs represented 1950’s America and a “symbol of aspirations”. The sculpture is located in Amarillo,, Texas and a photo of the project can be seen below.. Lord has had many publications and his works appear in many fine museums.  (SOLD)

MISS MAY HART AND HER FLORAL PARASOL

may

may2

This vintage real photo postcard features a pretty performer named May Hart. She is holding an interesting parasol over her shoulder. It certainly won’t keep her dry in the rain. I have had a difficult time finding biographical information about her. Interestingly, there was another actress named May Hart who was a witness to a very historic event in American history. An actress named “May Hart” was performing in “Our American Cousin” the night of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination at Ford Theater. Lincoln was killed in 1865, Forty-four years before this postcard was mailed. Looking at the youthful appearance of Miss May in this photograph, it is clear that she is too young to be the same May Hart. This postcard was published by the Philco Publishing Company which was located in London, England. It is part of a series (no 3435E).The postcard was postmarked in 1909.    (SOLD)

PORTRAIT OF A LITTLE BOY WEARING AN IMPRESSIVE NATIVE AMERICAN COSTUME

image

This vintage real photo postcard features an adorable little boy wearing a beautiful Native American costume. Note his feathered headdress. It is likely that this child was photographed in France and is dressed for the Carnival. This private studio postcard is in excellent condition (see scans). Addendum: A visitor pointed out to me that this postcard is not of French origin (see his comment below). The postcard is actually English. SOLD

A GROUP OF PROSTITUTES IN CASABLANCA, MOROCCO

prostitutes

prostitutes 1 This vintage real photo postcard features a group of six prostitutes posing for their portrait in Casablanca, Morocco. They are gathered around a table. Atop the table is a tray of glasses and what looks to be, a silver tea pot. The women are likely waiting to be selected by the next visitor to their brothel. The caption below the photograph roughly translates from French to “Morocco- The neighborhood reserve of Casablanca- an original tea”. The photographer of this photo is Marcelin Flandrin (1889-1957). Flandrin moved to Morocco in 1901 and volunteered for the military in 1912. He served as an Army photographer. Around this time, Morocco came under French rule. He corroborated with the French government and tourist boards. He was very involved with the French Protectorate government. Flandrin was criticized by some Moroccans for reinforcing “Orientalist” stereotypes . During the Rif War (Spain vs. Berber tribes), he published a number of reports. During World War I he served in the Air Force as an air observer, taking aerial photos of fighting. After the war he moved to Casablanca and went to work taking many photographs between 1921 and 1930. He published many photo books about Morocco. Flandrin was also an important postcard publisher in Morocco.
