CUTE CURLY HAIRED GIRL IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

A cute girl poses for her portrait at the studio of Latto, of Boston, Massachusetts. The youth is wearing a lot of jewelry; including a necklace, bracelets, and rings. She is also wearing a ribbon as well as an interesting belt and button sweater. She has moderately long hair and it is quite curly. The photographer, John C. Latto is listed as a photographer in the 1873 Boston Directory. At that time, he was partnered with George T. Rand. A publication of the South Boston Citizen’s Association(1900) mentions the “recent” death of Latto and the sale of his business to photographer, Lester Ayer. The publication also cites Latto as one of the leading photographers of Boston.

BOY DRUMMER FROM TRAVELING MINSTREL SHOW IN FERNDALE, CALIFORNIA

This cabinet card features a bow tied young boy posing with two drums in the studio of A. W. Gilfillian, in Ferndale, California. The reverse of the card has an inscription that identifies the subject as Arthur Robinson, who was “part of a traveling minstrel show” during the late 1800’s. The inscription also dates the photograph “before mom’s visit in 1895”.

ADORABLE CLOSE-UP PORTRAIT OF YOUNG GIRL IN LONDON, ENGLAND

This portrait features a beautifully dressed cute child. The child appears to be a girl, but this is only a guess. The child’s fancy outfit includes a lace collar and a pretty cap. She is holding a branch with only a single leaf. The studio that photographed this child is Pearce & Smith of London, England.

“KIMONO GIRL” IN DOWAGLAC, MICHIGAN

There certainly must be an interesting story related to this cabinet card photograph by Conklins Studio in Dowaglac, Michigan. A girl, who appears to be an early teenager, poses for this photograph dressed in a beautiful kimono and holding an oriental fan. Where did she get such a terrific clothing? Did her she, or her parents travel to Japan to obtain these clothes? Was Asian fashion in vogue at the time of this photograph? Comments related to these questions are welcome.

SAILOR BOY IN PHILADELPHIA (1890)

Meet Willie Howard Smith. He was three and a half years-old at the time of this photograph, which was in 1890. Willie is adorable as he poses for his photograph in his sailor suit. He is wearing a wonderful cap which is covering his longish hair. The photographer of this cabinet card portrait is Kuebler, who was located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Research discloses some interesting information about the photographic studio. The studio was co-owned and operated by brothers William Kuebler and Louis H. Kuebler. They were very successful photographers and one of their photographs of Walt Whitman is very well known among those that study the great poet. A news article in The Photographic Times (1888) announces the “largest contract ever made in the photographic line” had been awarded to William Kuebler to photograph the members of the Mexican Typical Orchestra. In all, 4,750 photographs were ordered.

This scalloped edged cabinet card captures a baby sitting in a carriage in the studio of J. A. Wilson &  August F. Gerding, in Ottawa, Illinois. The attentive baby seems to be intensely surveying the studio. A blanket sits neatly atop the carriage. A not too happy child is photographed with a beautifully carved wooden horse in this cabinet card. The toy horse is mounted on a wheels and the horse has a mane, bridle and reins. AUNT MINERVA’S DAUGHTER: BESSIE BOYER AND HER DOLL

The reverse of this cabinet card identifies the cute long haired little girl in this cabinet card photograph as being “cousin Bessie Boyer”. The inscription also indicates that Bessie is a cousin due to the fact that she is the daughter of a maternal Aunt named Minerva. The little girl is wearing an adorable cap and posing next to a large doll. No further identifying information about the child, the photographer, or the location of the photographic studio is available. SOLD
