The previous owner of this photograph claims that the couple in the photograph are from the Sympa family, but no explanation regarding how they were identified, was provided. The woman in this image has a devilish expression while her husband appears very serious. The woman appears to be very tall. In fact, she would need to duck, if she walked through the doorway of the fake house in this photograph.

A beautifully dressed couple pose for their portrait at a studio in Spring Valley, Minnesota. The photographer is Lucious M. Schofield who operated out of Spring Valley between 1889 and 1894. . Schofield’s gallery was taken over by E. G. Washburn. The couple in this photograph is dressed for a formal occasion and the quality of their clothing indicates that they are likely financially secure.
HANDSOME COUPLE IN LOCKPORT, NEW YORK (IS THE WOMAN AN AFRICAN AMERICAN?
A lovely couple pose for their portrait at a studio in Fairport, New York. The photographer is F. B. Clench. This handsome couple is beautifully dressed. A previous owner of this card described the woman as an “African American Beauty”. She is certainly beautiful but it is not clear that she was an African American. A local modern day historical society described Clench as the finest photographer working in Fairport in the late 19th century. He was born in Niagara, Canada. He set up his first photographic studio in Lockport, New York in 1863. He operated in Fairport between 1889 and 1902. He then moved to Madison, Georgia until he returned to Fairport in 1914, the year of his death. Clench was clearly a talented photographer. Wilson’s photographic magazine described Clench as a “painstaking and progressive artist”. The reverse of this photograph is stamped with the following: “Clark T. Rice Collections, Perry, New York. Clark Rice (1922-1999) was a photographer in the Perry, New York area whose work captured the Perry area from just after World War II until the 1990’s. During World War II he was an army photographer. The Perry Library housed the Clark T. Rice collections.

The woman is wearing a pin on her collar, and the man is wearing a hat that identifies them as Salvation Army members. There is a great deal of familiarity between the couple which is illustrated by the woman resting her hand and part of her arm on the man’s shoulder. This cabinet card photograph features a couple dressed in Salvation Army Uniforms. They are likely a married couple considering the familiarity evident by the woman resting her hand on the mans shoulder. The man is holding his hat on his knee and is wearing a Salvation Army Badge. The photograph was taken at Lachman’s Studio in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. A photographic journal (1894) cites a studio called Isaac S. Lachman & Son located in Pottstown. Anthony’s Photographic Bulletin (1901) reports the “recent death” of Isaac Lachman.

LOVELY COUPLE IN CAMDEN, MAINE
A wasp waisted woman and a mustachioed man pose for their portrait at the studio of William V. Lane, in Camden, Maine. The woman is clearly wearing a corset. The photographer, Lane (1849-1903) came to Camden and opened his gallery in 1883. He also had a branch gallery in Vinalhaven, Maine. He stayed in Camden for 15 years; and then moved to Boston, Massachusetts. While in Camden, Lane was the Chairman of the Board of Assessors and in that capacity, he promoted a new opera house in town.
