MAN AND TWO WOMEN POSE ON BOARD SHIP : ARTISTIC VERSO : BLACKPOOL, GREAT BRITAIN : CABINET CARD

This cabinet card of a man and two women posing aboard a ship, was photographed by D. Mitchell of Blackpool, Great Britain. The photographer, whose studio was located near a pier in the seaside city of Blackpool, utilized a relevant nautical theme. The backdrop is fantastic and the hanging rope held by the gentleman, and the ropes in front of the ladies, are a “great touch”. This is an unusual and fine use of background scenery and props. The South Pier was originally named the Victoria Pier. The pier opened in 1893 and served  vacation travelers to Blackpool. The subjects of this cabinet card image are likely tourists on holiday. Note the fantastic artwork on the reverse of the card. Wow! SOLD

DAPPER YOUNG MAN HOLDING A WAND IN WORCESTER, ENGLAND (CARTE DE VISITE))

This carte de visite features a dapper young man wearing a corsage, derby hat, and a bit of a bewildered expression. Take note of his wand. I call it a wand for lack of a better description. One thinks of wands as being related to magic. However, not all wands are associated with magic. In fact, wands also are symbolic objects of power. The photographer of this cdv image is George Evans who operated a studio in Worcester, England. This cdv is in excellent condition (see scans).

A MAN AND HIS HORSE IN FRONT OF A BARN IN BRADFORD, ENGLAND

This cabinet card photograph features  a man and his horse standing in front of a barn. Judging by the gentleman’s equestrian clothing and the condition of the barn, I would wager that this is a man of means. His horse is handsome and appears healthy. He is holding the reins with both hands and the tightness of the reins tells the horse who is in charge. The photographic studio that produced this outstanding photograph is A & G Taylor. This studio was one of several British studios that claimed to be “Photographers to the Queen”. Andrew and George Taylor owned the largest Victorian Photography firm in the United Kingdom.  The company was started in London in the 1860’s and by 1886 the firm had branches in 36 United Kingdom cities, and in 6 cities in the United States. The studio that produced this image was located in Bradford, England. It is interesting to note that The mounting board of this cabinet card is dark green. This cabinet card has gilded gold style edges and is in excellent condition (see scans).

PRETTY DANCE HALL GIRL : KINGS CROSS, ENGLAND

I wish I knew more about this young lady. She has an infectious smile. Her dress is frilly and has rows of lace. Judging by her attire, my guess is that she is a “dancehall girl” or actress. Perhaps a viewer of this vintage old photo postcard has another opinion as to the story behind this image. Some might consider this photo a bit risque. The woman seen in this image is wearing a very short dress for her era. An ink stamp on the reverse of the postcard reveals that this photograph was taken at the Avery studio. We only know that the studio was located on King’s Cross Road. King’s Cross is an area located in Central London. It may follow that Avery’s studio was located in London.  SOLD

ETHEL CADMAN : BRITISH COMIC OPERA STAR : RPPC

This vintage real photo postcard features British actress, Ethel Cadman. She appears to be in costume. Theater Magazine (1910) did a profile of her when she came to the United States to perform in the Broadway production of “The Arcadians”. Critics who saw her perform in the play, considered her as one of the sweetest singers that England had ever sent to America. At the time, she was just 24 years old. Her musical ability and her grace created instant popularity in New York. The article notes that when Cadman left for America, her mother was extremely ill with influenza. Her mother encouraged Cadman to leave and predicted great success was awaiting her on this tour. The plan was for her mother to follow her to the US when she regained her health. When Cadman arrived in New York, she learned that her mother had died. The article states that Cadman inherited her “lark like” voice and musical talent from her mother who was a choir singer. At age eleven, she sang from “The Messiah” at a country church. She received her musical training from the Guild Hall Music school. Her professional debut was with the Mudie Manners Opera Company. She spent seven months in the chorus but then was elevated to become a prima dona. She performed in a number of operas until she met theatrical producer, George Edwardes, who introduced her to comic operas. This postcard was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (No.4368E). The photographer who took Cadman’s portrait was Langfier. This postcard is unused and in good condition (see scans).  SOLD
