WELL DRESSED MIDDLE AGED COUPLE IN BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

This well dressed couple is posed for photographer S.  at his studio in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His studio was named “El Mirador”, the Spanish word for “the View Point”. The couple’s clothing suggests that they are people of means. The gentleman is wearing a three piece suit and a pocket watch. The woman is wearing a dark dress and is accessorized with a pair of earrings and a ring. This couple appears quite formal. Although they are posed as a couple, body language seems to shout that they are in different worlds. Pozzuoli did an excellent job of positioning his subjects and placing props. The end result is an attractive portrait of an Argentinian husband and wife.

“MISS CONSTERNATION” IN BURLINGTON, IOWA

This cabinet card portrait captures a curly haired young woman posing for her portrait at the Lupton studio in Burlington, Iowa. Note the woman’s lace collar. One wonders about the meaning of her clasped hands. Is she deep in prayer? Is she overwhelmed by worry. The photographer of this image is Oscal L. Lupton who was born in 1849 in Indiana. He appears in the 1880 US census and is listed as working as a photographer in Greenville, Illinois and living with his wife Nellie. The 1900 US census finds Mr Lupton living in Burlington with his wife and three sons.

A BOY AND HIS TOY BOAT IN BAYSWATER, ENGLAND

This cabinet card features a well dressed young boy and his toy sail boat. One can imagine the boy playing with this realistic looking model boat in a local pond or lake. The boy his wearing a bow tie and a happy expression The reverse of this photograph has advertising for the photographer, Thomas Fall. His studio was located at “10 Wellington Terrace, (opposite Kensington Palace Gardens), Bayswater W”. Thomas Fall (1833-1900) started as a lithographer and later worked as chief photographer for the famed English photographic gallery, Elliot and Fry. He began at that prestigious firm in 1867 and worked there for seven years. Click on the category “Photographer: Elliot and Fry” to view some of the firms images. He married Sarah Maria Farmer in 1863 and the couple had six children. Fall was a well known photographer, photographed royalty, and was London’s leading canine photographer.

WELL DRESSED AND TROUBLED IN REDRUTH, ENGLAND

I must admit that the woman in this cabinet card photograph may not be troubled, but she sure looks troubled. She also looks well dressed in her high collar suit, leather gloves, and monstrosity of a hat covered with feathers and ribbons. The photographer, Henry Opie opened his studio in Redruth, England in 1889. He expanded his business and eventually had studios in Truro, Falmouth, and Helston. The reverse of the image has an identifying inscription stating “Grandma Robertson”.

AN ADORABLE LITTLE BOY IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

A very cute little boy with ringlet curls is the subject of this portrait by the Tonkin studio in San Francisco, California. He is wearing an interesting dark sailor suit  and a collar pin. He seems comfortable on his perch atop a piece of furniture. A magnified close up image of this unidentified adorable child can be found below. THE BLACKSMITH SHOP: THREE MEN LET THE HORSE OUT OF THE BARN

Two blacksmiths and a well dressed man and his horse pose at the doorway of a blacksmith shop or stable. Stenciled on the door next to where the blacksmiths are standing, is the word “GRAPE”. One has to wonder whether “Grape” is the name of the horse. The photograph was purchased in the town of Brocton, New York. However, it is unknown whether this image was photographed in the Brocton area.  The photograph measures 6″ x  6 3/4″.    This is a terrific photograph of days gone by.    SOLD

UNIFORMED FIREMAN IN SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN

steinhaus f_0010This photograph features a handsome uniformed fireman posing for his portrait at the Steinhaus studio in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. It is unknown whether this fireman was a member of the Sheboygan fire department or some other department. The badge on his hat displays the #2 which is likely his unit within his department. Note that his badge displays a fire hydrant, crossed axes, hose nozzles, and hook and ladder. The photographer of this image is Roland A. Steinhaus. Interestingly, research revealed where Mr. Steinhaus received his training. The Professional and Amateur Photographer (1900) has an article which announces the “arrival for January term” of a group of students for the purpose of attending the Illinois College of Photography. Steinhaus was listed as one of these students and his hometown was reported to be Sheboygan. The town of Sheboygan was founded in 1846 and by 1849 was noted for its German population. MUTTON CHOPS MAN IN LEOMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS

A distinguished older gentleman poses for his portrait at the Richardson studio in Leominster, Massachusetts. He is nicely dressed and wearing a wonderful necktie. He has wonderful silver mutton chops that the photographer has captured effectively in this image. Lucius Augustus Richardson was born in Leomister in 1840. After completing his education, he went to work as printer for four years. He then learned photography and began working as a travelling photographer throughout New England. He then spent three years in Boston followed by working three years in Ashland. In 1860 he married Louisa Fitch of Maine. In 1873 he opened a photography studio in Leomister. His daughter Lillian Janette Richardson worked in the studio as a retoucher and printer of photographs.
