I’M YOUR CAPTAIN, I’M YOUR CAPTAIN, NAVAL OFFICER IN PORTSMOUTH, GREAT BRITAIN

A naval captain sits for his portrait at the studio of W. V. Amey in Portsmouth, Great Britain. I am uncertain about his rank. Perhaps a visitor to this page can provide helpful information to determine his rank and country of origin. Portsmouth was a significant naval port for centuries, including at the time of this photograph. The photographer advertises that his studio was patronized by the late Majesty Queen Victoria which confirms that the photograph was taken after 1901; the year of her death. This portrait cabinet card is in good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A LOVELY YOUNG WOMAN : FERDINAND FLODIN : STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

This vintage real photo postcard features a portrait of a lovely young woman. She is beautifully dressed and holding a parasol. This postcard photograph was taken by Ferdinand Flodin (1863-1935). He was a Swedish photographer who operated a studio in Stockholm. He was well known for his portrait work, especially of theatrical performers. He was educated in the United States from 1883 to 1887. For the next two years he ran a photography gallery in Worcester, Massachusetts. He then returned to Sweden. In 1906 he became secretary of the Swedish Photogaphers Association, a post he held nine years. This postcard was published by Axel Eliasson’s Art Publishers. The publishing house was founded in 1890 and the Stockholm company was the leading producer of postcards in Sweden for many years.  SOLD

PORTRAIT OF MRS HORACE NEVILL: ENGLISH STAGE ACTRESS

This cabinet card photograph features Mrs Horace Nevill, British stage star. She also performed under the name of  Annie Rose. She made her debut in the Gaiety theater in 1879. Her first major success was at the Royalty Theater in the production of  “The Merry Duchess” (1883). Some of the plays she appeared in include “The Lady of Lyons” (1888) with Mr. Forbes Robertson, “The School for Scandal (1889), and “Dick Venables” (1890). The reverse of the cabinet card indicates that the Photographer of this image, the London Stereoscopic Company served as “Photographers to the Royal Family”. This honor appears to have been given out rather freely as I have encountered many studios advertising that they were “photographers to the Queen” or “photographers to the Royal family”.  The reverse of this image did have a rather unique bit of advertising. The studio advertised that they offered free lessons and special studios and dark rooms reserved for the use of amateurs. This portrait cabinet card is in good condition (see scans). PRETTY LITTLE GIRL IN NEW YORK CITY : FASHION : LACEY DRESS 

This cabinet card portrait features a cute long haired blonde girl holding a book entiled “Nature Poems”. She is plainly dressed. This photograph was taken by William F. Farmer. He operated a photo studio in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The studio existed as “Farmer Brothers” between 1877 and 1880.  SOLD

THREE WOMEN ON MULES: BALANCED ROCK : GARDEN OF THE GODS : MANITOU, COLORADO

This vintage real photo postcard features three women on riding burros,  posing in front of Balanced Rock. The natural wonder is located within The Garden of the Gods. The photographer of this image is the Paul Goerke and Son studio, located in Manitou, Colorado. In the 1890’s, Goerke purchased the land around Balanced Rock. Goerke and his son, Curt, took photographs of tourists by the rock and sold them for 25 cents apiece. At the beginning of Goerke’s business there was no charge to view Balanced Rock. They made their money by charging for the portraits. Burros were among the props supplied by Goerke. This postcard has an Artura stamp box. The photo was taken sometime between 1908 and 1924.  (SOLD)

WORLD’S FIRST PLAYBOY BUNNY: FRENCH ACTRESS MISS AUGUS-THYNE

This vintage real photo postcard features the world’s first playboy bunny. Not really. This wonderful portrait captures French actress Miss Augus-Thyne in a risque costume and sporting long rabbit ears. Her exotic outfit also includes bells and pom poms. The “Ambassadeurs”, a Paris music hall, is printed on the top right hand corner of the front of the postcard. The portrait of Miss Augus-Thyne was photographed by celebrated Paris photographer Stanislaw Julian Ignacy Walery (1863-1935). Walery opened a studio in Paris in 1900 and was known for his portraits of showgirls.  SOLD

This vintage real postcard features a Moorish mother and child. She is carrying her child in a sling. Note her jewelry and traditional garb. The card was published by C.A.P. and edited by L. A pretty young woman poses for her cabinet card portrait at the studio of Augusto Baroni in Riva, Italy. The town of Riva is located in northern Italy in the province of Trentino. The town is formally known as Riva del Garda. The subject of this photograph is wearing a heavy chain necklace with a locket. She is wearing a beautiful dress. Her very thin waist is likely the result of a corset. This cabinet card photograph is in very good condition (see scans).

PORTRAIT OF A SMALL BABY SITTING IN A LARGE CHAIR : SPRING GROVE, MINNESOTA

This cabinet card portrait features a cute baby sitting in a large upholstered chair. The photographer of this photograph is Chris Engell. He operated a studio in Spring Grove, Minnesota. Preliminary investigation revealed little about Engell’s life. One document was located that reported that he was a landowner in Spring Grove in 1896. This cabinet card is in excellent condition (see scans).
