Mother and Child in the Dakota Territory

dakota-territory_0012

This photograph appears to be of a proud mom sitting with her cute child on her lap. The photographer is J Q Miller of Grand Forks, Dakota Territory. It is interesting to note that the  Dakota Territory was part of the land acquired in the Louisiana Purchase. The Dakota Territory existed between 1861 and 1889 so we know that this photograph was taken sometime during that time period.. In  1889 the land became two states, North and South Dakota. The mother and child in this Cabinet card were photographed in Grand Forks, which later became part of North Dakota.

Pullman Car Conductor: Boston Railroad Worker

conductor_00071

This photograph is of a Pullman Car Conductor. The photographer is Gray of Boston, Massachusetts. The Pullman Company manufactured railroad cars beginning in the mid to late 1800’s. In 1898 Robert Todd Lincoln, son of  Abraham Lincoln, became President of the company. I am hoping someone can help me identify the name of the railroad that employed this conductor. Take a close look at his collar buttons and try to identify the railroad by the insignia, or perhaps you have knowledge about  Boston’s railroad history. To view other photographs by Gray, click on the category “Photographer: Gray (MA)”.

Priest From St. Vincent De Paul in Springfield, Massachusetts

clergy_0004

This terrific Cabinet card is a photograph of a priest taken by the Chauncey Moore Studio of Springfield, Massachusetts. The reverse of the card is stamped indicating that duplicates could be obtained from the Society of St. Vincent De Paul. Cabinet card photographs of clergy are not uncommon although this is a nice close-up. Note the fine detail of his clothing. At one time, Moore partnered in a Springfield studio with his brother Hiram C. Moore. To view Hiram Moore’s work, click on the category “Photographer: Moore (Hiram).

Black Man in Chicago

black-man-in-chicago_0002

This distinguished looking black gentleman posed for this photograph at the studio of Huszagh in Chicago, Illinois. Check out the interesting backdrop and props. Note the pattern on the curtain and how his right hand is resting next to a pair of gloves on what seems to be a fur covered table. Do you think that this well dressed gentleman is wearing his best suit or, judging by his attire, do you think he may be a member of the clergy? Let me know your opinion.
