GQ MAN (TURN OF THE CENTURY FASHION PLATE)
This cabinet card features a handsome man who is obviously very fashion conscious. He is wearing beautiful clothes, and is wearing a ring, pocket watch, and fob. This stylish gentleman displays an air of superiority. He is holding his derby hat in such a way, that it appears to be floating. The dandy in this photograph and the photographer are not identified. The photograph was trimmed to fit into a former owners album or picture frame. SOLD
PRETTY LITTLE GIRL DRESSED FOR WINTER IN DOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE
A young girl wearing a winter coat and winter hat poses for her photograph at Miller’s Photo Company in Dover, New Hampshire. She is wearing a striped coat with big buttons and has a large fur muff to warm her hands. Judging by my observation of many cabinet cards, the striped coat is not typical winter wear for the era. The large stripes on the coat makes it look like prison garb. Note the fake snow in the background of this image. The reverse of the photograph has a printed advertisement that indicates that photographer Miller’s main gallery was located in Birmingham, Connecticut. The likely photographer of this cabinet card was William E. Miller. Miller had a number of studios located in Connecticut. His gallery locations included the towns of Ansonia, Birmingham, Derby and Shelton. Miller is credited with taking some of the photographs for a book entitled The History of the Old Town of Derby, Connecticut 1642-1880 (1880). SOLD
YOUNG COUPLE AND THEIR LITTLE GIRL IN DERBY, CONNECTICUT
An attractive young couple and their little girl pose for their portrait at the Morse studio in Derby, Connecticut. The little girl in this photograph is absolutely adorable and her smile is priceless. Her love for her mother is quite evident. The mother in this photograph is wearing a pretty dress and seems to be enjoying her intimate moment with her child. The photographer of this image, Thomas N. Morse, did an excellent job of capturing the joy that this family appears to have experienced while having their portrait taken. This vintage photograph measures about 6 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ and is in very good condition (see scans).

TWO SWEET AND WELL DRESSED YOUNG SISTERS IN DERBY, ENGLAND (CDV)
The little girls featured in this cartes de visite are adorable. They also are well dressed in their dresses adorned with frills and bows. Both appear a bit suspicious of the camera or cameraman. This photograph was produced by the Winter studio in Derby, England. Advertising on the reverse of the photograph (see below) indicates that the gallery was “patronized by her majesty the Queen”. Many photographic studios of the time made the claim that they were photographers to royalty. William Walter Winter (1842-1924) established his photo studio in 1867 at 45 Midland Road in Derby. He specifically built the structure to house his studio. Amazingly, the business still exists. Winter trained under photographer Emmanuel Charles. In 1864 he married Sarah Charles, his mentors widow. Winter operated his business until his retirement in 1910. The studio has been in the Derbyshire King family since then. Note the portrait of William Walter Winter (see below). This cdv portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

PROFILE PORTRAIT OF A PRETTY WOMAN IN DERBY, CONNECTICUT
A lovely young woman poses for her profile portrait in Derby, Connecticut. It is clear from the image that the subject took some pains to prepare her hair for her day at the photography studio. The photograph has been trimmed so the photographer’s name is not identifiable.
MUSICAL GROUP IN LUZERNE, PENNSYLVANIA
This cabinet card captures five young adults who may be part of a musical group. One of the two woman in the photograph is holding a guitar; and that may be the only evidence that this group was in the business of making music. The men are all wearing derby hats. The woman with the guitar has a flower covered hat on her lap, and the second woman has a basket filled with flowers on her knees. There is also something odd included in the content of this photograph. There appears to be a sheet, or sheets, of paper on the ground between the two woman. Is that white square paper, sheet music, or is it a photographic flaw in the image? The photographer of this cabinet card is J. H. R. Kemp. His studio was located in Luzerne, Pennsylvania and his tenure there included the 1890’s.
DAPPER MAN WEARING A DERBY IN LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA
A dapper man poses for his portrait at the studio of Lewis C. Fowler, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This gentleman is nicely dressed. He is wearing a long outer coat with what appears to be a velvet collar and satin lapels. He is holding a pair of gloves and has a derby hat on his head. The subject of this photograph’s image possesses an aura of success and importance. Fowler’s photographic studio was located at 12 West King Street, in the town of Lancaster. An advertisement in the Lancaster Board of Trade directory appeared in 1887. A directory of businesses in Philadelphia, indicates that Fowler operated a studio there in 1890. DAPPER MAN AND HIS THREE HUNTING DOGS IN PENDLETON, OREGON
A well dressed man poses for his photograph at the studio of a photographer named Ward, in Pendleton, Oregon. The man is wearing a derby and a pocket watch. He is holding a cane and is posing in front of a beautiful backdrop. The gentleman is accompanied in this image by three dogs. The dogs appear to be retrievers; and most likely, they are hunting dogs. (SOLD)
FASHIONABLE VICTORIAN COUPLE IN DERBY, ENGLAND
A well dressed Victorian couple pose for their portrait at the studio of W. W. Winter in Derby, England. William Walter Winter (1842-1924) was the son of Cornelius Jansen Winter, a Norfolk portrait and animal painter. Winter started as an assistant to Frenchman Monsieur E. N. Charles in Derby. In 1863, Charles died and Winter ran the studio with Charles’s widow. In about a years time, he took over the studio and married Charles’s wife. Interesting turn of events; boss dies, and soon thereafter, Winter had his boss’s business and his boss’s wife. Winter continued to operate the studio until his retirement in 1909. He sold the business and the studio still operates today from the same premises.
