This cabinet card portrait features two adorable little girls sitting in a big chair. They are presumably sisters. The girls seem a bit bewildered while they are being photographed at an unidentified studio. Bewildered or not, they are very cute. This cabinet card has gold bevelled edges and is in good condition (see scans).

PRETTY LITTLE GIRL IN NEW YORK CITY : FASHION : LACEY DRESS : CABINET CARD

A well dressed and pretty young teenage girl poses for her portrait at the studio of Henry D. Schoerry in New York City, New York.  The girl is wearing a lacey dress with a high collar. The photographer posed the teen in a manner in which he could take a partial profile photograph. Henry Schoerry was born in Germany in 1854 and emigrated to America in 1870. He began his career as a photographer in the 1880’s. This cabinet card portrait has a lovely backstamp. Note that this postcard has a bas relief feature and that accounts for any “outlines” you see on the image or the reverse of the card. This photograph is in very good condition (see scans).

ADORABLE SMILING CHILD : FASHIONABLE : SYRACUSE, NEW YORK

A child dressed in fashionable clothing poses for his photograph at the Frey studio in Syracuse, New York. The child is displaying a smile. He is leaning against a wicker chair. Vincent Frey (1837-1916), the photographer, was born in Germany and died in Syracuse. He was a photographer in Syracuse for more than 30 years. The cabinet card is in overall Good Condition (see scans).

FASHIONISTA BOY : AT THE BEACH : DEYOUNGS’ STUDIO : NEW YORK CITY

A fashionable young boy poses for her portrait at the DeYoungs’ Studio on Broadway in New York City. The faux setting is a beach scene. The boy is wearing a suit accented by a bow tie and boots. His straw hat and picnic basket rest on a large rock beside him. The photographer, Joseph DeYoung (1843-1919), was both well known and highly respected. He had operated his studio from a number of addresses in New York City. He left the 815 Broadway address, where this photograph was taken in about 1890. He was at that location from at least 1884. In 1907 DeYoung’s studio was involved in the apprehension of a noted thief. The studio had a display case outside the store so pedestrians could see samples of their work. The thief was caught jimmying open the case and removing two sports photographs. The police were very interested in the home address given to them by their new arrestee. They were surprised that he lived in a mansion but it made sense when they learned he was a millionaire’s butler. He had worked in that same capacity for other millionaires living in the city. When the police searched his room, they found a cache of personal items belonging to his current and former employers. Years later, a deceased DeYoung made the news because of his bizarre estate planning. When he died, he left five dollars to his wife, five dollars to his son, and one half of his business to his business partner, Matilda Wallace. (SOLD)

LITTLE GIRL AND HER DOLL : SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA

This cabinet card features a pretty young girl posing for her portrait while she holds her doll. The girl has a serious expression as she looks into the distance. She is wearing a necklace and has a bow in her hair. The photographer is Oscar Victor Lange (1853-1913)  of San Francisco, California. He was a leading photographer in San Francisco and also was known as a landscape painter. He was born in Hoboken New Jersey to German immigrants. His family name was “Fahrenberg”. His father was a portrait painter and his family moved around alot. The 1860’s found them in New Orleans and in the 1870’s the family lived in Texas. During the 1870’s Oscar moved to San Francisco where he worked with Ernest W. Newth producing stereographs. At this time he changed his last name to “Lange”. In the 1880’s Oscar opened his own San Francisco studio on Market Street and during the 1890’s he relocated to Montgomery Street. Lange was known for his urban architectural photographs and also for his portraits of railroad workers. He is also noted for his astronomical photographs taken with the University of California. Lange died in 1913 from tuberculosis. This cabinet card has some extra features. Note the maroon mount and the gold trimmed edges. (SOLD)

ADORABLE YOUNG BOY ON A TRIKE : ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI : CABINET CARD

A curly haired young boy with tightly pursed lips poses for his portrait at the carpeted Rino studio in St. Louis, Missouri. The studio was located at 801 Franklin Avenue at the time this photograph was taken. The boy in this image projects a flat expression, However, this is a wonderful portrait of a turn of the century tricycle. August Rino is listed in “Pioneer Photographers from the Mississippi to the Continental Divide” (2005). Rino was active in Chicago between about 1858 and 1860 and operated in St. Louis between 1860 and 1875. Note corner wear (top left corner). Also note the circle in the bottom right hand corner of the revese of the photograph (former home of a price sticker). This vintage cabinet card is in overall Good Conditon.  (SOLD)

LITTLE GIRL / STREET URCHIN IN MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS

Photographer, George Kidder, of the Gem Studio in Melrose, Massachusetts, produced this photograph of a young street urchin. Street urchin is truly a horrid word to describe what appears to be a homeless or poor child residing primarily in the streets of her town or city.  The little girl featured in this cabinet card may be neither homeless or poor but she certainly conveys that impression. She clearly is not dressed in fine or cute clothing like many children who posed for photographers in the cabinet card era. The photograph appears to be taken outside but may have been taken inside a studio. The previous owner of this image labelled the subject of this photograph as “Little Miss Attitude”.  The photographer of this cabinet card, George R. Kidder was found in both the 1870 and 1880 United States Census. He was listed in both censuses as being a photographer and as residing in Watertown, Massachusetts. He was married to Rebecca Kidder and had two daughters. It appears that Kidder was a veteran of the civil war. George R. Kidder was a member of Company I in the 1st Regiment Infantry of the Massachusetts Volunteers. He entered service as a private and left service with the same rank.

AN ADORABLE LITTLE GIRL SITTING IN A WICKER CHAIR : CABINET CARD

An adorable little girl sits for her portrait inside an unknown studio, in an unknown location. Identifying information about the photographer was lost when a previous owner of the image, trimmed the photograph to fit into a frame. The child posing in this photograph is seated in a wicker chair. She is wearing a cute dress and terrific hat. The child is smiling for the photographer and appears quite relaxed and radiant in front of the camera. There appears to be a toy lying next to her on the chair. It looks to be a stuffed animal, perhaps, a teddy bear. This cabinet card measures about 6.50″‘ x 4.25″. Overall, this cabinet card portrait is in good condition (see scans).

TWO FASHIONABLE AND CUTE KIDS ON BROADWAY (NEW YORK CITY): CABINET CARD PORTRAIT

Two adorable kids pose for photographer Rud Bachmann whose studio was located on Broadway in New York City. The older child is holding a walking stick. It is very likely that the children are siblings. The photographer’s full name is Rudolph Bachmann. He was born in 1850 in Switzerland. He came to the United States in about 1880 and by 1884 was operating a photography business at 1437 Broadway in New York City. The gallery remained at that address until 1922 when the studio was relocated to 6 East 14th Street. Bachmann was later joined in business by his son. This cabinet card portrait is in excellent condition
