Two very well dressed children pose in their winter coats and hats at the studio of H. C. Gabriel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The children are posed in a faux outdoor scene complete with snow on the ground and snow covered fences. Herman C. Gabriel is noted in the 1900 U. S. census. The census reveals that he was born in Austria in 1833. He was married in 1873 to Johanna Gabriel. He was living with his wife and 22 year-old, American born daughter, Emma. His occupation is listed as “Photographer”. Herman Gabriel is cited in the American Photographer (1916) for winning second place in a photography competition. This Cabinet Card portrait is in very good condition and has excellent clarity (see scans).

LITTLE GIRL IN A FIELD OF DAISIES IN BARABOO,WISCONSIN

baraboo

baraboo 1A cute little girl with curly hair poses in a studio created field of daisies for photographer Sim Mould. The studio was located in Baraboo, Wisconsin. The girl is wearing a dress wth a lace collar and has a flower pinned to the front of her dress. An inscription on the reverse of the cabinet card indicates that the child’s name is Hattie Acot. Unfortunately, no biographical information could be found about her. The photographer, Mr. Mould is mentioned in a number of photographic journals. He placed an ad for his studio in a book about Sauk County, Wisconsin (1891). The Photographic Times (1898) reports on his appointment to a lobbying committee of the Photographers Association of Wisconsin. The Encyclopedia Dubuque (1911) reveals that Sim Mould operated a photographic studio at 107 Main Street in Dubuque, Iowa. The town of Baraboo is situated on the Baraboo river. The town was settled by Abe Wood and originally called Adams. In 1852 it was renamed Baraboo. In the town’s early history it became the home of several sawmills. In the nineteenth century the town served as the headquarters of several circuses, including Ringling Brothers. Baraboo became known as “Circus City”.  This cabinet card portrait is in very good condition (see scans).

EXOTIC LOOKING FRENCH MOTHER AND HER BABY SITTING ON THE HIGHEST HIGH CHAIR IN THE WORLD

high chair baby high chair baby 1 This vintage real photo postcard features an exotic looking mother posing with her baby. The child is sitting on the highest high chair that I have ever seen. Using an elevated chair is very smart. The chair puts the child at the mother’s level and makes for a better posed photograph. I have not seen this photographic strategy employed before. The mother has very short hair and a serious expression. She is wearing a stylish collar pin and necklace. Note her fashionable boots. A stamp on the reverse of the postcard reveals that the photographer was “Pornet” and his/her studio was in Roanne, France. Roanne is a town in central France and is located 90 km northwest of Lyon. This vintage photo postcard is in very good condition (see scans).  (SOLD)

FOUR ADORABLE SCHOOL GIRLS ON THE MOVE IN AGEN, FRANCE (1946)

school kids Four adorable school girls are captured by an amateur photographer in Agen, France. The girls are carrying their school books and they appear to be quite happy. In the background, it is evident that the sidewalk is filled with pedestrians. An inscription on the reverse of the snap shot indicates that this photo was taken in 1945. It is interesting to note that World War II ended in 1945, no more than a year before this photograph was shot. Agen is located in southwestern France and is beside the Garonne River. The city is 85 miles southeast of Bordeaux. This photo measures about 3 1/2″ x 2 5/8″ and is in excellent condition.  SOLD

HORSE AND BUGGY STEADIED BY A YOUNG FARM BOY: HIS TWO SISTERS ARE IN THE BUGGY

family buggy

family buggy screen shot This vintage real photo postcard features a young farm boy steadying a horse by holding on to it’s bridle. The horse is hitched to a buggy. Presumably, the girls occupying the buggy are the boy’s two younger sisters. In the background, stands a large barn or stable. Also in the background is an adult woman who is standing on the porch of the house. She is wearing a hat and holding an umbrella. On the ground next to the horse is a cluster of boxes and a pail. This photograph appears to have been taken out in the country, where and when, horse and buggy transportation was not uncommon.  (SOLD)
